As the old saying goes in life: 'You hope for the best, but plan for the worst'.
Obviously everyone is 'hoping; Hughes continues his career in Vancouver. The 'worst' is that he forces a trade and leaves.
But that's what makes the signing of Wilander and the continued development of kids like Mancini, Kudryavtsev and even Mynio so important.
Even if Hughes leaves, their blueline is far from 'hopeless'. They would still have some great young d-men in Wilander, EP25 and Mancini. Marcus Pettersson is signed long-term and so is Hronek, who's still on the plus side of 30. Even in his mid-30's now, Myers is giving them decent minutes.
So it is possible the Canucks blueline could survive the loss of Hughes. And of course they'd obviously get something decent back in a trade--probably another young d-man or two, to continue building with.
It would be one of the saddest days in franchise history, if Hughes bolts. But fans arguing in favor of planting a keg of dynamite under the roster and simply 'blowing it up', is pretty pessimistic.
It's understandable I guess but not logical imo.
