I literally felt like a Jehovah's Witness on here trying to spread the word of Quinn over the last 3 years.

If you read through my post history, I stated like an absolute lunatic that Quinn Hughes might be the best hockey player in the world in the not-too-distant future. Right now, at this particular moment - he is the best player in the game today.

He was always neck-and-neck with Cale Makar, and it's crazy how few people realized that.

Hughes/Makar was the closest 2 player Calder race since the lockout. Posters were acting like Makar smoked Hughes but 66%/33% was basically unheard of at the time, it's almost always 90%/10%

At least Zadina was ranked in the top-5 by most. Montreal and Arizona went off the board with picks that should have gone 5 -10 spots lower. And if Hughes was 2 inches taller and 10 pounds heavier, no one would be arguing that Dahlin is a better D than Hughes.
Wow didn't know that 2 more inches matter :naughty: what does Hughes GF say about it??

coming into the season I probably wouldn’t have put him on Team USA, but I’m feeling a bit dumber everyday for that take
Why? Because he is a tier 3B defender? Lol 😆

Q.Hughes still carries the 'awful defensively' stigma because it was true before he was legally allowed to buy alcohol in the USA. Makar on the other hand, entered the legue as someone who could buy liquor in the USA, and thus never really got the 'bad defensively' label many young offensively-gifted defencemen get stamped with.

I think it's unfair, but I also think Hughes has to flat out beat Makar by the end of the year if he's to win the Norris. If it's really close, Makar will take it based on reputation IMO. That's if it stays the way it is today. Obviosuly there are plenty of other possible outcomes including neither winning.

Where it was true his +/- was terrible his sophomore season, the stat itself reflects how much ice time a player gets * how good (bad) his team is. And those first two seasons he was there the team was terrible.
But if you actually watched his play he was incredible in his own end the way he could weave and stickhandle the opposition.

Makar plays a completely different style than Quinn, he's almost a power forward - arguably a Rover vs a Counterpoint (both benefit from having a Point (the old hockey position known today as a Defenesive Defenseman, not the "quartback" point or the score).

Quinn these past three seasons has clearly done away with the label in spades for anyone that has watched him play. Something he shouldn't have been burdened with in the first place.

Also, Makar is not wearing the C and isn't getting the benefit of turning his team around the way that Quinn is. The way the young man can handle the press in such a relaxed and well thought out matter goes to show he was a leader just waiting to break out. (great interview with Gretzky on TNT the other night. Wasn't fazed at all). This is one aspect as a player that's definitely a positive in his favor.

It's not reputation. Quinn Hughes has to start killing penalties if he wants to beat out Makar for the Norris with the same amount of points. That's the main reason he beat up Josi that one year. You need to be relied upon in all situations to be the best defenseman in the league.

He literally does kill penaties
whats so difficult about that for people to grasp?
People said the same thing last year
And again he killed penalties then too.

Makar was so good on that last goal last night. Just give him the Norris now.

What an absolute beauty. Can we store his dads seed for science? All the man does is produce super stars :sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm: make an entire Olympic roster compiled entirely of Hughes.

How many times has Makar led the league in overall scoring?
Is this the makar thread?

In my books, both Hughes and Makar have looked on par defensively this season.

In practice, that has been Hughes stepping up his defensive game and Makar not looking as sharp defensively as he has in the past.

I do not think either of them are having particularly amazing defensive seasons, but neither are liabilities at all.

With what they're doing offensively, they don't spend a ton of time in their own zone anyway.

The difference is that Makar has a good defensive reputation that he earned, and Hughes has a (somewhat unfair) bad defensive reputation which was half-earned and half just made up because of his size.

I do wonder if that reputation will prevent Hughes from winning the Norris, or if this is the season he finally sheds it, since he's been at least hovering around average for a couple seasons now.

TLDR: Both players are fine defensively this season, if nothing changes then it might come down to a scoring race between them.

I really wonder if Quinn really has to kill penalties as his defense is and has been better than Josi's for quite a while and by quite a bit as well.

Quinn is probably still one of the most under rated of the top 15 Dman in the world for the last couple of seasons but is telling you his time has arrived..
