GDT: PS #4 - 09/23/17 | RANGERS @ Devils | 7:00 PM - MSG

Preaseason, sure. But the same old **** from AV is concerning.

It's always going to be Staal in high leverage situations. Any ideas that wouldn't be Staal were wishful thinking. Any notions that Staal would "fight for ice time" were laughable.

And if it's not Staal it'll be the next garbage defenseman.

The guy literally loves bad players because he's not all there upstairs.

Face-off violation penalties of this volume are dumb.

Also, Staal is trash. If this is him having trained hard all summer and fighting for his spot, then he is done.

Alright, they need to ice a near NHL line up the next few games. Enough of the tweeners.

Fontaine makes the cut imo. In terms of forwards and kids:

Chytil, Andersson, Fontaine up front. Maybe a veteran like Carey with Letteri.

Didn't see anything from Schneider or Catennaci.

Nieves had some corsi moments, but he's so not used to shooting that he shanked 3 good chances... still did a good job of skating and getting open.

All in all, I like Kosmachuk for a few shifts, but nothing in the 3rd.

As much as I've like the new toys, I'd like to see the Rangers pick up a 3rd-4th line guy.

Desharnais, I'm happy with.. but not sure about that 12 forward.

Pumps is happy to be on a one-way contract before sliding over to Europe next year. Let's not dignify any ice-time for him and call yourself a contender.

Kosmachuk has been on the ice for one Devils shot attempt all night. I thought he looked good.

Staal is our worst possession player tonight but you knew that.

Kosmachuk was once considered a pretty solid prospect. I know NHL games don't mean anything but in NHL 16 he had a high top 6 forward potential( high means a high chance of reaching it, top 6 fwd is obvious. Usually players who have this will reach 85-87, maybe higher. Stepan, Kreider, Zucc were all rated there) he got up to 87 for me in NHL 16 because I forgot to change his potential to a more realistic one but I still rolled with it. He looked good tonight.
Lias got much better as the game went on, he was awful in the first 2 ish periods. Crawley impressed me even before the goal. Nash is frustrating as ****. Zib was awful and did nothing, he is not a future 1C.

The only time we outshot the Devils tonight was with McDonagh and Shattenkirk on the ice but they disappear in a tie game, because in a tie game we need DUUURRRRR VOTORON EXSPORIONCE

This team went from having a lot of center depth to no true center. Really hope Chytil develops into a 1st line center. But even he looks more like a winger to me.

Crawley was the main bright spot. Didn't look out of place at all today, looked comfortable on the PP, and now we know he has a bomb of a shot. I see why AV kept him around and gave him a go. London still has room for another overager on their roster, but does this guy really need to go back to the O? If the Rangers can get him consistent playing time in Hartford...I think they should sign him and start developing him right away.

Guys like Fontaine and Nieves were pretty active today, too...but nothing special.

All in all, a pretty underwhelming night...sans Crawley.

It feels a little weird when no one mention our future #1 center in his first pre-season game back from a cold.
I`m not pressing any alarm buttons, but AV is probably concerned after this game. :)

On D-

I liked Crawley out there, hope he's in the A. Nice shot, some gaffs early, but overall he was much more well rounded than I would have thought. Still give it to Tony D as far as the best youngen on D.

Shatts and McD had some nice moments together, but it was a slow game. Rangers look like they will struggle to score this year. Not too happy about that... they are moving away from the stretch pass to the controlled entry with speed, and I think that will take some adjustment.

Zibs and Nash looked like they just wanted to get through the game and not compete... not good signs early.

Holden wasn't bad... I think he's the team's number 5 option at this stage and that's not a bad thing.

Line-up on opening based on play so far:

Kreider-Zib-Zucc (Giving Zibby a mulligan)
Vesey-Hayes-Nash
-Miller-Buch
Grabner-Deharnais-(Fast)

You can consider LA, Chytil in those filler spots. With Fontaine as well.

McD-Smith
Skjei-Shatts
Holden-ADA
Staal

Schneider, Catenacci, and Kosmachuk had more ES ice time than Nash.

Let the AV'ing commence.

Could it be that he wanted to get a better look at players on the bubble than play a known entity to win a preseason game?

FWIW, all three of the AHL'ers should be sent down. Not impressed by any of them.

As Mikos said, Fontaine could make this team and I wouldn't be upset. Perfect modern 4th liner.

AV should be concerned that he belongs in a straightjacket.

I remember seeing him a couple of times in the 2nd period, but he was otherwise invisible. Only his first game, though...and he's been sick...as well as pushing musical buttons. He'll get there.

yeah, but maybe one of the reason why they talked about Stepan earlier with Maloney and others between the power plays - not that we can compete down the middle against the top teams in our division.

Yeah true, I think many need to step up some levels here in pre-season.

Mika was getting a lot of ES minutes and there was no ES for two periods.

He never got a chance to spread his wings.

And he was playing with Schneider and Catenacci.

Andersson should go back to Sweden. He's been underwhelming, to say the least. He's a smart, heady player can probably play the 4th line center role and do well at it right now, but that's not where a 7th overall pick should be playing. He needs to develop his offensive game.

To me, if a young forward makes the team, having watched two games from each player, it's Chytil. Never thought I'd say that, but he's earned it.

It looks like Gorton is going to have to go waiver wire basement diving for a 3rd line tweener up front.

I think we are ok down to the 3rd line; some combo of:
Zucc-Mika-CK
Buch-Hayes-Nash
Grabner-Miller-Vesey

then you've got a pretty average group of Puempel, Nieves, Fontaine, Deharnais for the 4th line until Fast comes back.
The issue is that we are very weak at centre, but that was known coming in to camp

I could really get used to 27-22. Like, every day, every night.

Lias has been extremely disappointing but he's a child so whatever. Chytil has been great and if you bat .500 on your teenagers in a given camp, you had a good camp.

My only worry is AV. There's no sign that he's going to stop lighting the exact same fires that burned us down last year. If anything, the signs point to him being even more stubborn about the same stupid **** he does.

I wonder who's going to play over Buchnevich and Anthony Clendening.

halverson has looked much better than i was expecting this preseason. big part of that is the lowest expectations due to how awful he was last year but hopefully a positive sign that he will be better this year

Completely agree with this.

And I know I'm not supposed to be "worked up" over preseason, but holy ****, if Drew Stafford was on fire I would pull up a log and tell ghost stories.
