GDT: PS #4 - 09/23/17 | RANGERS @ Devils | 7:00 PM - MSG

Guess I'm in the minority but I didn't like Nash's game at all. Too many times he gave up possession with a weak shot attempt or an ill-advised move to beat someone. Want to see him use his linemates a little bit more.

Nice to see Crawley show he has some legitimate NHL tools.

So right now it's likely Deangelo or Pionk pairing w Staal and Holden the spare ?

Gotta play the kid that makes the team right ? Unless Kampfer is the 7th. Only other way they can go

Yes, I hope that Pionk get there - Tony Deangelo already have NHL experience 39 games 14 pts. and only 21 years old, @Vitto - and he is very talented and with a skillset to compete for a 2nd pairing with Smith who struggled at times last game vs Devils. :)
Personally not a fan of Kampfer I hope they cut him soon from our camp this year. Smith might end up on our 3rd pairing - we are deeper on our D this year for sure.

I would love to see Skjei - DeAngelo on our 2nd pairing.

I think Kampfer goes to Hartford, Holden gets moved for a pick and both ADA and Pionk make the team.

Also, I'd rather see Nash not score in the preseason. For such a streaky goal scorer, I'd rather him save those streaks for when it actually helps this team.

Yeah, a good point I speculate that Holden might be moved for a pick in the 2018 draft, and AV was happy with Nash and he had a strong game even though he miss some good chances last night.

Can’t remember if I posted this but good to see Staal pick right up where he left off.

Hey if we got Melo to accept a trade #whynothim

Cool w similar return. Heck I’d take Emerson Etem back.

My eyes are telling me that DeAngelo has a decent edge on Pionk. De with Staal(though Id prefer Graves) and Pionk sent down and work on stamina and strength.

I'm with you. I like what Pionk brings, but he can use some AHL adjustment time in terms of decision making and getting that NCAA stamina built to pro levels. Graves and ADA are both NHL ready for full time jobs and should both be on the roster with Staal as 7th D until he folds and accepts a trade.

didn't get to watch the game closely. vets seemed to be "slacking". The game looked too fast for Staal.

Seems it's been too fast for at least 3 years. Getting too fast for my eyes as well.

The first few moments I turned on the game, Staal fumbled a puck trying to make a play in the defensive zone, got it taken away, and then he got knocked down by someone.

It was sad, dude looks totally done

I'd say yes but would hope Holden plays over Staal as the 3rd pairing vet. Dunno if that will happen. At least teh rangers have the cap room to carry Staal as an expensive 7th

Yeah but imagine what they could do if they didn't have to carry that money. It is what it is. Sather gave him the contract terms and money. Staal would've been silly not to sign on the dotted line. It's a shame he got hurt with the concussion and the eye injury. I like Staal. He was a great defenseman with some big moments as a Blueshirt. I don't see this ending well between team and player but what's got to get done must get done.

I wonder how much of it is mental. The narrative since about halfway through last season has been that Staal is finished. You know he hears this stuff and it has to have an impact on the ice.

Not saying that he would be a good player still if the criticism ceased, but I think the criticism has accelerated his descent.

Those injuries were before he signed his extension.

February 2011: Concussion due to hit by Eric Staal
March 2013: Puck to the face, eye injury
December 2013: Concussion due to hit by Reid Boucher
January 2015: Signed 6-year extension at 5.7m AAV

I was out of order so my bad. Sather, with benefit of hindsight, was foolish to give him those terms and money but obviously he and management didn't foresee the decline coming so rapidly that they didn't want him to go somewhere else and flourish. Oh well. What's done is done.

Interesting,

McD Kirk
Skjei ADA
smith Pionk
Staal
Trade Holden

It`s crazy to sign Staal with that deal with such an injury history (6 years as well). We will notice both G & Staal contracts years after they are long gone and it might be enough burden so it will be too hard to compete for the cup in the future due to cap reasons.

It`s like the Canucks management - they create a hard time for fans who follow the team for years with no obvious goal what to do next.. And what is their main goal for transfer policy, and it`s too hard for youths to get a decent role on that team. At least AV use some youths in his system - we will see what will happen before the season start and how our young promising players perform in the last two games vs Flyers.

I'd like to see that D but don't have much faith in that becoming a reality.

Opening night will probably be:

McD-Shatty
Skjei-Smith
Staal-ADA
Holden

I expect to see plenty of Staal-Holden with ADA scratched. They should trade Holden but I have to see it to believe it.

What would they do this year? I think going forward it'd be useful but this season they already still have a fair amount of cap space and will accumulate quite a bit for trade deadline moves.

I'm not against getting rid of Staal, just saying they don't HAVE to play him or something this year just because of his salary.

Love it!

He also had a concussion last year and missed games

e: They obviously banked on him returning to close to form after those injuries but wiffed badly. I think most people said "well if he gets back to where he was that's fine but if not..." and here we are.

As for the lineup, I still think they'll definitely start with one of the kids in the lineup and a vet sitting but whether it stays that way will depend on whether the kid runs with the chance.

If it were a real meritocracy Staal would definitely sit, he's looked bad. I don't really give him the same preseason vet excuse because he knows he should be fighting for a job and he looks like an AHLer, not a NHLer who's taking it easy

Desjardins getting a hearing for that hit is ridiculous, really feel for the guy. NHL is becoming unwatchable, same style of play as men's league.

I turned the game off after 2 periods. Our lack of intensity was bothering me. I was probably hoping for too much since its just a preseason game. I hope we can flip the switch come opening night.
