GDT: PS #4 - 09/23/17 | RANGERS @ Devils | 7:00 PM - MSG

Staal is just bad out there. He's spinning like a top and desperately reaching with his stick because the play is blowing by him. Kreider disappeared again.

Guess I'm in the minority but I didn't like Nash's game at all. Too many times he gave up possession with a weak shot attempt or an ill-advised move to beat someone. Want to see him use his linemates a little bit more.

Nice to see Crawley show he has some legitimate NHL tools.

I agree with you. Aside from a few moves and the screen he set on the goal, I didn't like his game at all. None of the regular forwards were particularly very good.

Thought the only real "standouts" were Crawley and Fontaine. Staal was horrible in his pre season debut and was even worse yesterday.

Interesting,

McD Kirk
Skjei ADA
smith Pionk
Staal
Trade Holden

Eventually, but not so early.

They favor the LH-RH set up... suits system and game's trend.

But they won't ice two inexperienced guys, and only 3 guys capable of solid PK minutes. Once Pionk and ADA can prove they have no issues handling PK duties, that's when you make the move.

They will hold on Holden until both Pionk and ADA push guys out of the line up.

I'm still holding Marc's effort level against him so:

McD-Shatts
Skjei-Smith
Holden-ADA
Staal.

Once Pionk is ready, then you make the move.

BTW a top 4 RHD is very valuable, once Voynov went off of LA, their defense wasn't the same. The Rangers need both of ADA and Pionk to make that kind of a push.

I turned the game off after 2 periods. Our lack of intensity was bothering me. I was probably hoping for too much since its just a preseason game. I hope we can flip the switch come opening night.

Well, it is pre-season. I don't expect players to give 100% in a meaningless game

Fontaine has been quietly great this preseason.

Works the walls very well and isn't completely clueless offensively. His strong defensive game has been noted and hes been excellent on the PK.

If you're looking for more of a "classic" 4th line center, this is your guy. Probably not right out of the gate, but he doesn't look like hes too far away, which shouldn't be too surprising since he was drafted as an over ager.

The hockey sense is razor sharp. When I saw the PK with Nash, and Desjardins, I was very impressed.

Size, speed, defensive acumen. Some flaws here and there on breakouts, but that's easily coachable.

The gap coverage, and pressure points in the D-zone... that was very pro. There's an efficiency to his game that is not often seen in a 20 year old. Very heady young man.

Watching halverson closely tonight on the Dvr. Great puck handling great size. Awful mobility awful flexibility. He’s very stiff unfortunately don’t see much of a future for him at this level. Very slow to his spots. Ridiculously slow laterally. And like I said horrible flexibility on top of the fact. Size can only get u so far. He’d struggle in the A honestly not surprised at his numbers watching him

Heard something like this could be the lineup vs Philly:

Kreider Zib Zuccarello
Nash Andersson Buch
Puempel Chytil Carey
Lettieri Nieves Fontaine

McD Shattenkirk
Staal DeAngelo
Smith Kampfer

Hank
Halverson

Fwds Hayes, Miller, Vesey, Grabner and DD all scratched but will make the team. A couple of spots still up in the air.
Skjei as well
Holden a healthy scratch here. OMG bring on the trade rumors! ;)

Should be a decent test for Chytil to produce, as well as seeing what Andersson could do with stronger line mates.

Figure Kreider-Zib-Zucc is one set line, and it looks like we'll get McD and Shatty after all.

I know he has less experience, but I like Fontaine more than Boo as a Center. Not as fast a Boo, but still has good wheels. Good on the dot and better hockey sense.

With Boo's size and speed, yet less than acute vision, he should be tried as a power Winger. A 4th line version of Kreider. Just needs to shoot more often.

You are right. Not at all sure these positional combos are correct

The 'Miller at centre' experiment seems to be going swimmingly. He's played, what, 1 game there throughout the preseason? And if he doesn't play tomorrow that gives him one more chance before the season proper...

I said before the first pre season game that Fontaine would surprise a lot of NYR fans who don't follow prospects much in a very positive way.

His statline in juniors wasn't impressive but his play was and he looks to be adjusting to the pro game just as quickly as expected.

Should be good to see what Chytil can do with some weaker linemates. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a solid showing from Puempel as well.
