My favorite is the fact that the guy who followed him just said "f*** it" when Tieksola rounded the top of the key and left to cover a different attacker. Or is it possibly a different defensive system, like a zone...you're responsible for the guy who is in your zone? I've never seen that before, so it looks wrong, but having never played the game before...ya know.

That’s exactly what it was.

The whole thing makes more sense if you ignore the puck and watch the LW and RW high. It’s pretty clear they’re keeping zone assignments. Things start to blow up because of a flagrant, uncalled pick on the defender (the center, I think) who originally had Tieksola. That causes the LD to jump out and cover him, but LD gets skittish about chasing someone to the blue line when he’s supposed to be covering his zone down low. So he stays home, expecting the wingers to pick up coverage at the point. But then LW gets caught in a second, also uncalled pick play. And at the same time RW inexplicably gets tunnel vision and follows a crossing play through traffic, picking his own LD who is trying to recover his original position, taking them both out.

So now you’ve got three picks — two blatantly illegal and uncalled — taking out a total of 4 defenders. Tieksola probably thought he was friggin’ Mario Lemieux out there.

That's Ilves Jr. A who Tieksola's Karpat is playing against.

Probably same system as the grown-ups team, and both are dead last in their respective leagues. The SML team kicked their coach Karri Kivi out today.

kochetkov started as st. petersburgs no.1 - but now after 88,7% in 6 games, Alexei Melnichuk took over (96,1% in 8 games) .. so sad for Kochetkov. Hoped he could stay in net :-( ... but this Melnichuk-guy seems to be quite good. just 21yrs, but lacking some size (6-1)

So was that the Capitals offense or Tampas?

But really--on the fist pick, sure it was a pick--but with the zone defense, as soon as Tieksola moved out of the zone the next guy should have rotated over. Which leads to pick up top--caused as much by the defensive player making contact with the offensive player as it was the offensive guy's fault. It looks like the defender was either trying to beat the "picker" to the high spot and lost or was trying to push the "picker" back into Tieksola's line--either way, he failed. Even then, the pick was so high that the defender had plenty of time and space to recover--which he still got beat--in part because of his own team hitting each other.

I think it was a good play by Tieksola--but an even worse (better?) example of bad defense by the other team.

We can agree to disagree, but IMO that second pick was not at all a 50/50 situation. The defender was slow recovering, yes, but that pick was deliberate and a penalty every single time. Looks like they're only using 1 ref and he was in the opposite corner, with a bad angle on the play at the point.

I do agree that it was poorly defended, but in the context of a junior game where an 8-0-0 team is running blatant picks against a 1-10-0 team, while the best goal scorer on either team is skating around with the puck untouched, it has a bit of a "Team Iceland beats Mighty Ducks" vibe.

I don't think the coaches or fans of this junior team cared or broke down this play as much as you guys. Bravo.

Per Lempo, I bet the coaches were too busy updating their resumes.

Kinda sucks that none of them have done much of anything with their chances in Liiga this season, but they're all young, so I'll stay off the ledge for now.

Honka has been really unlucky so far, he has played well in the top 4.

Puistola and Tieksola are behind stacked rosters, nothing they can really do about it. Tieksola has been good in U20 and Puistola has gotten very low minutes (8 min/gp).

Killinen actually just today had 2 primary assists and the other one was nice. Ässät tekee maalin

He really didn't impress me in prospect or training camp. Might be worth an AHL signing, but he looked significantly outclassed when playing with pro talent to me.

Has he ever attended training camp? I looked at the last 3 years roster on the Canes website unless I just missed him, he's not been on the roster for any of those seasons.

I know he's come to some prospect camps, but those aren't really televised so I can't comment on how he's looked, nor would I read too much into it.

I think college guys have to pay their way to training camp so most don’t attend.

I didn't take it as a good sign when he went back to them this summer. Made me think he wants to finish strong and pick his team, knowing he could probably always fall back to us if he didn't have the best year.

I don't know if his upside is even to third line center level, but hes a big guy who moves decently and can play center. Always good to keep your prospects that can make it at least to the minors.

Yeah, I agree. The good news is that he was pretty positive about how the Canes handled it in that they didn't pressure him to sign, probably because he's a 6th round pick and they Canes have a ton of depth already. Here are some quotes from back then:

"They respected the decision," he said during Hurricanes development camp in June. "There's no pressure. I still need to develop physically, and college is a good place for that. They're not in any rush to get me in the system right now. They've really been more supportive than pressuring on me."

"I just see where I am from the year before, try to improve on myself, my fitness," he said. "Get to know the coaches on a more personal level and ask questions. Not everyone gets this opportunity, so I'm trying to soak it all in."

That's why Cotton, a native of Parker, Texas, said he is not in a hurry to climb to the professional ranks. His preference is to develop at his own pace.

"A lot of it was, am I ready for this?" he said. "We have had three mediocre years at B.C., and it's a school and an institution built on success. Going into my freshman year, I wanted to add to that and it hasn't come. Having this opportunity, especially to be a captain, is a big part of my decision."

I realize he's a 6th round pick and a long shot to become more than an AHLr so I won't be too broken up either way, but I like to see guys like him (big, smart, leader, improve each year, etc..) have a shot.
