She broke it immediately on Twitter which doesn’t require an Athletic subscription. And as she gets more plugged in I expect to see that much more, which is exciting and a good sign for a young, promising reporter.

I really really like Civian’s work, my point is not that she’s not a good reporter or writer. My point is that some of the very high-end, in-depth stuff like the Wheeler article mentioned above is not something she’s doing because it’s not really her job. She takes a fun, fresh approach to the team that makes her articles more enjoyable than Luke’s or Chip’s in my opinion, but I wouldn’t pay solely for Luke or Chip in the same way I wouldn’t pay for The Athletic solely for Sara. That’s not really a knock, I probably wouldn’t pay solely for any one writer. Hence my original comment, if you’re only looking for Canes coverage, Sara is the majority of it, and there’s not a ton behind the paywall from Sara that you wouldn’t eventually get anyway from other sources except the human interest takes (or, as THH said, if she gets an exclusive interview). If the human interest pieces interest you, go for it. They’re well written and well done and I read every single one. But if I was ONLY looking for Canes coverage I probably wouldn’t join just for Sara.

Usually I just lurk this forum (I'm a Wild/Canes fan, I just don't like to argue), but thanks for a really well thought out response and good point

thanks for all the helpful responses, folks. it sounds like it might be a good choice for me regardless. trust me, i have tried to pull the trigger a few times. but sara combined with the idea of reading joe person articles about the panthers behind a paywall just struck me as incongruous with my expectations for journalism. not to turn this into a bash sara thread, but there have been several things she has said on twitter that were just blatantly ignorant to her job description that keyed me into the idea that she wasn't the type of journalist that would be consistently worth my time. at one point saying that she sees no reason why her reporting can't be positive all the time kind of cracked me up. it was basically like saying "who cares if i'm afraid to ask tough questions in scrums because i want everyone to like me?" she seems like she would be good at getting the players to act naturally around her and that will help her human interest stories, but her defiance about her role in delivering the frustration of the fanbase to the people that matter hurt her journalistic integrity. people want the truth and people want reporters that won't wilt from saying something that requires saying even if it doesn't sit 100% right with who they're interviewing. i'm not interested in dougie hamilton's favorite color and why it's such a mood.
not to stray off topic too much, but probably a good selling point for the Athletic for someone like you is related to the bolded.

Joe Person at the Athletic is a totally different animal than Joe Person at the Charlotte Observer. much more freedom to cover angles for impact, rather than pageviews. maybe you won't like him much more in this format, but you'll get more out of his work without a doubt.

and Jourdan Rodrigue is an ascending star for this site, where she has more room to stretch out stories for color and depth. ties in to her true strengths as a writer IMO.

I guess what I'm saying is the journalistic model of the Athletic is as much a selling point as the quality of writing it enables.

If this is your take (I think you should give her articles a chance though I do get where you’re coming from), I can say I joined The Athletic far before the Canes had a dedicated presence (joined Summer 2017) and have been continually thrilled with my purchase.

I can't speak for the amount of sports anyone else is into, but my only problem with the Athletic at this point is there's almost too much content for me to keep up with. I get good coverage of teams I'm interested in with the Canes, Mariners, Patriots, Hokies, Avs, Duke, the Caps (tangentially since they are local and my wife is a fan), I get plenty of national coverage for all those sports, and then I occasionally see an article for another team that I find to be a pretty interesting angle. It's rare that I can't open the app and find a few stories I'm interested in, that are good quality.

I also think Civ has been getting more comfortable being critical. I just read her most recent article and she was ripping on Jake Bean and Gustav Forsling. Would I subscribe to a website just for a young reporter in the second season with a team? No. I subscribed for Russo. But I enjoy reading her and am excited to see where she can go.

Goodness, What are we even talking about? Is it October yet?

There is an equivalent amount of content that I will never even see for every single team, and leaguewide pieces on MLB, NBA, CFB, CBB, Soccer (broken out by league), Motorsports, MMA, Golf, Boxing, WNBA, the business of sports, and a bunch of podcasts.

And no, there's not a chance in hell I would ever read all of this. It's like a fire hydrant of content. I just focus on the cream that rises to the top, which really is phenomenal stuff compared to any other outlet I'm aware of.

If you’re just a Canes fan, maybe skip it.

If you’re an NHL fan, their national stuff is outstanding and fun (Dom L’s and Corey P’s lists, Sean McIndoe’s everything he writes), and other teams’ coverage is great as well.

But you’re right that 50-75% of Canes-related articles will be written by Sara, and while she’s a good writer and I enjoy her pieces she doesn’t bring much new to the table.

If you're a fan of other sports, it's also a great value. I follow the Saints in the NFL and AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, and there's outstanding coverage for both.

Yea, the bad angle doesn't really show much, but it looked more like boarding gone a little wrong because the guy looked down to reach for the puck or something?

Didn’t look much like a hit to the head. Definitely boarding, resulting in his head hitting the glass.

It’s his 2nd hitting to the head major penalty in his last 5 regular season games. The last one he broke Cole Coskey’s jaw and got suspended 8 games. I could see this one being 5-8 as a repeat offender

That was lame. You’re available to be hit, and the guy stood there against the glass with his face close to the boards and his back turned while fishing for a lost puck with his head down.

The way the current generation uses showing their numbers in all situations as puck protection is pretty annoying. That whole play was a perfect example of the forward doing it wrong. Head down. Spins the wrong way and shows his numbers. Puts himself into an awful spot. He was supposed to get decked. This is the generational argument right here imo. That historically has always been on the attacking forward for making a bad choice. The new generation says “no you should be safe when you spin the wrong way and show your numbers” and this hitter gets classified as a degenerate who’s probably a cannibal in his free time.

Old school says, “oh you didn’t catch a pass smoothly and had to slow down? Square up because you’re about to get rocked.”

New school... “no I’m good, watch what happens to this guy.”

I’ll go back to keeping my eye on these misbehaving clouds.

I'm with you 100% on principle.

The problem is that brain damage leading to suicide at 45 isn't a reasonable punishment for turning the wrong way in a hockey game. Back when we just thought it was "Your bell gets rung, maybe you miss a couple games", that's fairly acceptable.

Yup. If this changes the way the game is played, so be it.

I don't know that it will, though. There are multiple disadvantages to having your head down with your back to the rest of the play. Getting hospitalized shouldn't have to be one of them.

He's got the puck and Rees hits him is shoulder-to-shoulder from the side.

If the guy bounces off the boards and continues to play without getting hurt is it still a 5 minute major...is it even a penalty?

For me it's a clean play with an unfortunate result.

Reinforcing that playing the game wrong and intentionally not protecting yourself doesn’t do anyone any good either. The people who commit suicide after violent careers often have cte, but I’ve seen studies that say normal people have cte too? It’s too early to throw blanket statements like hitting people leads to suicide at an early age from brain damage. I agree the evidence is there that it needs to be studied and understood. I also agree that the intentional bad hits needed to go away. I feel lost of them have, so now the eye is upon anyone who throws a generally clean hit on an unsuspecting player (who should be suspecting).

The guys throwing these hits is being treated like they’re Rico Torres. They’re not. Most of these hits people argue about were good intentioned hits that went wrong. 100% good hit expectations require no hitting. That’s where we are headed anyways.

The player here put himself in a vulnerable position. That needs to be just as bad as the hit. It always was before and it’s the part of old school that needs to carry on. Equal parts trying to lay of vulnerable people and people not letting themselves be vulnerable in the first place. Penalize them both. People will lose their minds in the beginning but if we’re going to outlaw hitting then don’t let people get away with showing their numbers like that. Intentional or not.
