Cut him and give his contract slot to Gallant.

full

Gallant is definitely getting signed after that lol. DW probably fell in love.

The more I watched him, the more I was impressed with Halbgewachs. Gregor had a good 1st half, was a little invisible in the 2nd. Ryan Newpower I was actually impressed with at times. He's a little shaky, but there's potential there.

Chekhovich was by far the best forward. Ferraro was the best all round D-man.

Like others pointed out, Sasha was not super noticeable. Expected more out of him.

I thought Halbgewachs gave Chekhovich a run for his money in the second half.

Only caught the 2nd half.

Thought Chekhovich and Blichfeld stood out. Ferraro was good but didnt do anything spectacular or anything, in the 2nd half at least. Thought Gregor had some good moments. Sasha was invisible.

For those raving about Merkley in the 1st half, what did you think of his 2nd half? Wasnt overly impressive to me.

Gallant can scrap by the way. Haley, watch out!!

Merkley definitely wasn’t great in the second half but he was still good. You can see some of the bad habits in his game though. He was miles better in the first half.

Chekhovich is a shark on day one if he has another training camp like last year and scrimmage like this. He is slick and knows how to finish. I think he has the highest potential of all forwards...

Halb looked fast too. Dark horse to make a push in his second pro year.

Blich looked good. Gregor too. All but Chmelevski. Merkley is miles away defensively still. Nice hands and all but he can’t do that at the pro level. He gave up a ton of chances. His D game is what this whole year better be about or he will be a flashy bench player. At the pro level, your D zone is more important. Ferraro looked steady but I think he needs a year or two with the cuda. None of the D stood out dramatically.

None of the undrafted guys stood out to me either.

I can see why dougie might leave some space for forwards to compete for spots...

merkley definitely had a better first half. I don’t know if it’s just me but he seemed to lack stamina. He was all over the place though. I liked Halbgewachs game, he’s one of the better skaters out there but just so small. He needs to add some mass And I think he has a chance to make it

Good to hear his 1st half was better. While he had glimpses in the 2nd half, I saw just as much bad as good. Seems to just float sometimes, also was just puck watching in the neutral zone once and let someone get behind him for a breakaway.

Halbgewachs actually didn't look as small as I expected him to.

I am guessing here but to me that is a mental thing. He was not contributing in the form of points/assists and felt the need to do too much. He is so good skating into the zone but then gets boxed out because he cannot dangle around players. This is where he needs to get the puck to his teammates quicker because he draws players around him. His great skating lets him enter the offensive zone but then he needs to use that really good passing to get the puck off to his teammates before he gets out muscled.

To me he looked pretty good in his own zone. Good positioning, anticipation and stick work. He gets out muscled again from time to time but given his size and body frame I am not sure if that can ever be fully remedied in corners.

I honestly think this is his biggest issue. He had at least two or three plays he could've driven to the net with the puck or just put it on net, but felt like he had to pass it for the highlight reel play. Then at the end with the goalie pulled, he was trying to drag it through two/three/four guys.

If you watched Merkley closely, you would see that he was having a good time and not trying too hard. Just having fun. Biggest grin on that kid. He’s at least two years away, but absolutely talented. Needs work on defense and stamina. I hope he isn’t rushed.

Having Burns and EK65 on the team is such a big advantage for us. There is no need to rush Merkley. I think he needs to play against the pro's (AHL) more to improve his game further. I think a lot of his moves that were not working today may have worked in the juniors but he needs to simplify that part of his game. Problem is he goes back to the juniors this year and I just don't think that will help him.

Yeah his second half was worse than the first half, but he still looked fine.

For me I’m mainly watching him when he doesn’t have the puck, and even in the second half he was still doing a good job with his positioning, couple get on your horse backchecks, and although not stellar at it he went into some board battles.

I’m not worried about some of his bad habits on offense, some of the drop pass stuff and over passing stuff will get ironed out if he’s getting nhl coaching, he can get away with some of that stuff more often in the ohl, but it won’t work as well in the nhl and I’m sure he’ll figure that out. If only he were like 20-30lbs heavier and an inch or two taller I’d want him in the nhl this year even with his warts. Even so I still feel like he has a chance.

After tonight and even last years training camp I’m now sure I’m ready for some Chekhovich action in the nhl this year. With his goal scoring ability I think he’d probably get along nicely with Thornton to start off with, and maybe even works his way up the lineup.

Also agree with others that Ferraro looks ready enough, that’s good. I was also still impressed by Kniazev. Gallant definitely earned himself some points tonight too. I also still have a soft spot for Kotkov and I don’t know why, but noticed him a few times tonight.

Sucks training camp is so far away, but I enjoyed tonight’s scrimmage, really glad they streamed it.

He’s miles away yet. A lot of work to do defensively. He’d get pushed around like a rag doll if they try to rush him.

I personally thought he was ready for a few games last year, but I'm convinced he'll get a good look this season.

Definitely I agree, I was surprised they didn’t give him a look last year too. At least he killed it in juniors and now looks to be picking up where he left off last year, and we definitely need guys like him more this year with our cap issues and loss of depth, so really glad it’s looking promising for him.

He's not going to Europe. The CHL would have a fit if NHL teams started skirting their player development agreement to loan kids out to European teams. It's different when it's a Goldobin situation where the player came from Europe to begin with, but they're not doing it with a high-end talent North American player.

I'm not sure why this concept has persisted for so long. It's not happening. It never really has happened.

This game is for the fans.
It’s not indicative of these players on the whole. The rookie tournament, for those who continue, is where they’re playing for spots. Almost everyone has only been around these guys for a week.

I liked the Ch-twins. Along with Merkley, Ferraro. They all made things happen.
I was nicely surprised by Reedy, Gregor and McGrew. Made some nice plays.
Leonard has a sweet penalty shot.
Robinson looked strong in net.

Kotkov looked really good in the first half, imo. Would have the best in the first half if he could skate. His positioning, decisions, and passing were all on point, but it was pretty obvious he was a step or two slower than everyone else.

Also hoping we sign Wyatt Newpower for his name alone.

I think that’s an accurate description of Merkley’s performance in this one. He definitely tried to do too much when his team was down.

I agree with you on his work in his own zone as well. He was well positioned for the most part; he does need to add some muscle. He will never be super strong but having a wiry build like Erik Karlsson has will help him. Somebody should gif that Ferraro pass that he picked off and sent the other way for a 2-on-1. That play was a beauty.

I prefer to think of it as Pete wanting him, throwing a tantrum like a 5-year old in a toy store.

"I WANT HIM, DOUG! I WANT HIM I WANT HIM I WANT HIM I WANT HIM I WANT HIM! MINE MINE MINE MINE MINE MINE MINE!!"

I see the same type of desire, but, expressed a little differently lol.
