Why would Chicago even want to trade him? He’s their hardest worker night in night out, steadily improving and on a sweetheart contract

He probably doesn’t have the skill to ever become a true top six winger, but he’s probably the ideal third liner on a cup contender

because Chicago is far from a cup contender so if someone wants to overpay maybe that pick can become a larger piece than Hagel.

Sabres drafted this guy in 2016 in the 6th round but never qualified him, and they relinquished his rights. Another brilliant move by Botteril.
Botterill was so bad that Benning should have donated 10% of his salary to him while he was in the league because as long as Botterill was GM of the Sabres Benning looked half way competent in comparision.

Hes not getting PP1 and top6 minutes with any team that will trade from him.

The dude has FOUR power play points and as much time on the ice shorthanded as he does on the PP.

He's a terrific even-strength player with incredible versatility. OF COURSE no team is going to pay a 1st and a top prospect and another asset for him but the point is - he's being asked about A LOT because he's an absolute gem of a player and the Hawks have like essentially zero reason to move him unless they get a king's ransom back.

He's the literal embodiment of the type of player the Hawks need to be valuing as they try to pivot/rebuild on the fly - and that's also the reason other smart GM's are asking.

Safe to say - he's not getting traded.

So sounds like the GM leaked this to stop being bothered about him?

As a leaf fan I'd pay the price for Hagel. Hes a very good player with a low cap and has term. He'd look great beside Tavares and Nylander.

I think it's safe to say Hagel is of high, high interest to competing teams.

- He will be 23 until August of ths year
- He's shown incredible growth every season
- He's on pace for 50 points with very little of that coming on the PP. If you want to say his shooting percentage is a bit high, fine - but he's got speed to burn and underrated skill and there's zero doubt he he's got 45-50 point middle six production in him on any team.
- Combine that with the versatility to play on both special teams units, a chippy-ness that belies his size and an industriousness and work ethic that is absolutely top notch with advanced possession metrics on a poor team that point to continued room for growth.
- He's making only $1.5 million for two more years after this year and is STILL and RFA after that.

The Goodrow comment I guess kind of applies in that maybe it would take either an outrageous trade or the "idea" here of an outrageous trade for people to actually look into who Brandon Hagel is except that Hagel is far younger, has far more upside and and has far more contract control than when Goodrow was shrewdly acquired by the Lightning and people flipped out that they gave up a 1st.

Hagel is exactly the type of player a smart GM is going to try to acquire before he becomes a "known" name and yeah, I do think those GM's are definitely asking Chicago about him.

Who said they are gonna move him?

Because his trade value is tied to his ludicrously cheap contract that runs for another 2 years past this one.

Chicago isn't competing in the next 2 years so that value is kind of wasted on them whereas it's absolutely massive to a contender.

If they trade him, they can get an asset haul that will help them 3-5 years from now when they're looking to turn a corner.

I seriously had to look him up. I didn’t find anything that would lead me to believe his is worth a 1st or a top prospect, let alone both.
