Easiest prediction of my life:

Farrell makes some great plays, nobody recognizes them because they don't end in the net and then people bash him even though he's playing with 2 guys who could not be worse suited for his style of game.
Played terrible in the rookie tournament, played fantastic during scrimmages; let’s hope we see the good version starting tonight

In the first preseason games, sometimes teams
discuss their line-ups openly so that they try to get it about even. Maybe that’s what happened
Guess Montreal wants trial by fire for their team? it feels like the Habs are trying out their prospects and rookies tonight while a large amount of the Devils team are roster players. It sort of seems a bit pointless. The Devils team playing the Flyers at home tonight is definitely weaker outside of the top line.

We do get to see the Nemec vs Slafkovsky battle for the first time though so that should be fun.

Savard is as good as gone. If the young kids continue their development curve, someone will have to go. It could be one of them (Mailloux or Barron as an example) or it could be Matheson. I love Matheson, but he might net us the best return. The young guys have better contract status' as we retain a ton of control over them for a while still.

It is a good spot to be in.

If they are both gone. Our most experience D will be Guhle with only 2/3 seasons? I don't see Matheson being traded. We need a vet for the D. I could see us trading Harris-Barron for a good forward.

I'm curious if that Slaf/Newhook/Anderson shows up all pre season if there's any chance they'll make that the 2nd line to start the season and just move Dach to 1st line RW and Monahan to 3rd line center.

They won't be moving Dach to wing. There's a clear organizational belief and desire to develop Dach down the middle.

He'd have to have a long sample size of sub 40% face-off percentage this year.

They are gonna pair Monahan with Dach to ease the face-off burden on him.

Newhook is most likely to go to the wing, they'll use him there first at center but I think when Dvorak comes back he'll be the one moved to the top line for a spell and they'll continue with Dach down the middle where they see him and where his skill-set is maximized.

I love this idea. I also love that we have so much flexibility up and down the lineup.

We could legitimately ice something like.....

RHP - Suzuki - Caufield
Money - Dach - Gally
Slaf - Newhook - Andy

And give them all roughly equal time on the ice.

I think that's probably the way they're looking at it now, but part of me is hoping Newhook has an absolute breakout and forces their hand to put Dach on the 1st line lol.

I'm more hoping Newhook has an absolute breakout on the top of that line and Dach continues to show that he could be a legitimate 1C as well.

I think Newhook's speed game is better down the wing.

Quibbling but that first line is way too small and I don’t think RHP should be that high up. I actually think long term that Dach should be with CC. Give Suzuki some bigger wingers so there’s more balance. To your point though, yeah we could have three skilled lines.

If it’s Suzuki CC then Slaf should get some time with them as well. I have no problem if the move Slaf around as long as he’s playing with skilled players.

I think they might do it from time to time. They definitely see him as a center but I don't think they're really worried about him developing there too much as his two-way game is already pretty refined and he's shown adaptability moving from C to W last year.

Ideally you would have Dach locked into the 2C slot to give him as much ice time at C as possible, but his development has to be balanced against opportunities for other players and we're kinda short on quality RWs right now. If sticking him on Caufield and Suzuki's wing for 4-6 weeks gives us better options to give Newhook (and maybe Slaf) more ice time, try him out at C, while still getting Dach 18+ minutes with skilled players I don't think they'd be too torn up about it.

Dach has a much bigger priority over Newhook at playing center. If they want to give better linemates to Newhook, they will move him to the wing, not Dach.

I don't expect Newhook to be a center for the habs long term. Suzuki and Dach are locked, and we have Beck coming soon who should be a really strong 3rd line center.

It was only scrimmage but man does he look good up the middle. I completely pencilled him in as a winger at first but I like how he looks with the puck on his stick.

It's an amazing problem to have. I could possibly see Dach moving to the wing if Newhook keeps doing what he's been doing.

In the long term yes, but Dach isn't going to forget to play C if he spends like 4-6 weeks with Suzuki and Caufield and he's already a pretty refined center, it's not like he's otherwise new to the position.

I don't really care too much either way as I don't think Newhook is going to be a C for us long term either but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we started the year with Caufield/Suzuki/Dach and Slafkovsky/Newhook/Anderson as the top 2 lines.
