But half the D is injured.

You dubas fanboys always screamed this excuse when you had the chance.

No we didn't because it didn't matter. Do you recall last year? We had Muzzin, Rielly, and a few others injured last November and Sandin, Liljegren, and Gio stepped into top 4 roles and we went almost completely undefeated during that stretch.

I thought the Leafs played well for the most of the game but just terrible goaltending and defensive structure from a few players are just sinking this team badly. Klingberg, Reaves and Kampf in particular right now are just not NHL quality at all... that's 7M dollars down the drain.

Treliving deserves a ton of heat and he better get even more if he doesn't rectify the brutal mistakes. Say what you want about Dubas and what he did here but at least this team was good defensively and they were good most nights during the regular season... now we can't even have that.

I must have heard about 50 million times that losing the Montreal series was totally OK cause of the injuries to Muzzin and Tavares.

That is because many posters simply don't watch the sport they watch the scores and react based on that.

Keefe had us a top 5 defensive team last year and a top 7 team the year before but now posters say he can't coach a defensive system.

This is on Tre for giving Keefe shit players. Who is winning with this D core? Who is winning with Sammy playing how he is?
The majority of the D are holdovers from last year. Holl out/Klingberg in. McCabe hurt. Brodie and Gio are cooked. This is the main issue. That and goaltending has been atrocious this year. Wasn’t many options in free agency

Woll had a .778

Matthews Marner knies we’re awful

Klingberg’s most useful thing was playing defence by shooting it at our pumpkin goaltender

Gio is cooked not on a cup contending team at all, so is Brodie but he can be a bottom pairer. That fourth line probably has as many goals against as the sharks have goals

2nd and 3rd line were bright spots of the game

No safe defensive hands on the Leafs right now.

And who is responsible for trading Holl for Klingberg and not moving Brodie and finding another solution? I was calling from the roof tops to trade Brodie at the draft and find another mix somewhere. Gio is 40 years old it is common sense you cannot count on 82 games of good play for him or expect him to be able to step up and fill roles during injuries.

McCabe needs to step it up, but he is fine. Liljegren is good. Rielly is good. But the rest of the D needed work badly, it was evident we needed toughness back there losing Schenn and a top 3 D. Instead we got Reaves and Klingberg.

Sandin was traded away and Gio's age has caught up to him. Liljegren is out for a while. A lot happens within a year.

Why is Keefe so afraid of putting Reaves in the press box where he belongs?

I mean, it's not like he's going to hit him...
Who is sitting in the box to replace him? Is there anyone?

Holl was a UFA who no Leafs fan would have paid him what Detroit paid him. Klingberg is a huge miss.

Of course Holl was done here. But it doesn't take a genius to see how we used Holl and the results he got here, and that not replacing that is stupid. Klingberg is the complete opposite of what Holl provided us.

I get we needed offense from our D but dear god did he not watch tape or talk to people in Anahiem about him?

do you think Treliving will admit his own mistake 13 games in?

I think he will get sent down to the Marlies eventually... but no way Treliving's first big move after free agency is admitting he signed a bad contract 13 games in.

Our top dogs have played exceptionally well. Most of them are running on all cyclanders. Even Marner who looking like he's been a bit slower
Our 3rd line looks better but wonder if they are good enough to be a third liner

Everything else is just up in the air. Brodie and Gio are done. They were done last playoffs.

I guess the good news is that better find out now what the problems are, course correct than after trade deadline

Agree we needed a shutdown dman and neither Holl or Colonel Klingberg are that. IIRC Holl was on the ice for 1/2 the goals against in the playoffs. I honestly cannot believe Stevie Y gave him that deal. Then again, look at what Perry, Foligno, Kerfoot, Engvall got paid. These GMs are not rocket scientists.

Yeah, I'm not getting the love affair for Holl all of a sudden. Maybe the Holl from three years ago. The one from last season and the one before that he was awful. He looked overwhelmed and out of the play more than half the time.

Lol at worrying about losing Holl, he’s atrocious.

It’s fair to give Tre some time to properly evaluate what he has. If they continue to suck, than it’s on him to fix it. The free agency crop was terrible, so at least he avoided making mistakes there, Klink is just a 1 year deal.

Hopefully he realizes that he needs to move off a significant piece to address the holes on this team

Exactly

It means NOTHING if HIS team continues to LOSE !!! Him and his 3 other RICH buddies can't win ALL BY THEMSELVES. They take, and continue to take, too big a bite out of our salary cap.

Our team lacks the necessary skilled support players, especially on D. This is due to NOT ENOUGH cap space.

It also shows his and marners lack of dedication to a 200 foot game. Even by analytic stats Matthews-Marner- Jarnkrok was the 12th worst line in the league by expected goals again/60

They need to do other things besides get their cookies

Brutal game to watch, only positive is that Domi has played his two best games as a Leaf back-to-back after getting moved to C, we should keep him there
Injuries on D are sinking this team more than anything right now, Gio-Klingberg aren't even a strong third pairing let alone handling 2nd pairing minutes and Lagesson and Benoit are both putrid. Benoit is actually playing pretty well for his abilities I think lol he's just not remotely NHL calibre

i tried to stay away from post game last night because I was really pissed. Now that I've had some time to calm down....

1. Special teams needs to be fixed
2. Goalies -> you should be able to make saves
3. DEFENSE (see pic below for context)

Klingberg has only 5 points and is a -8 with only 14 shots on goal (ZERO goals). Also, only has 3 EV points.

Klingberg's -8 would be more digestible if he was putting up points which he isn't. Ideal scenario is that Klingberg puts on points and doesn't give up goals. However, if he is giving up goals he has to double the output (at the very least match it).

In the next 5 games if Klingberg doesn't improve either the offensive or defensive game then find a trading partner and clear that cap space or put him on waivers worst come to worst.

Klingber's play is not sustainable in top4 if we want to have any success.

4) Forwards: a lot of cross crease passes are allowed; our forwards need to do a better job on relentless backcheck (and forecheck); we can't be gliding. It needs to be fixed.

5) Coaching - Keefe you need to get guys ready to play and play hard for at least the next 10 games here. And stop the galaxy braining!

6) Kill the "cute" plays - just play simple hockey and kill the cute plays, offensive zone turnovers trying to force a pass at the offensive blue line and feeding opposition transition with speed and odd man rush. This isn't something that is new. Leafs have been doing this crap for years now. You have to learn by now. COME ON!!!
