Post-Game Talk: Predictable Outcome - Leafs Give Up 5+ on Home Ice, Lose

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
This team has no strengths. It's just a shittily put together rush team with a sprinkling of superstars on top and a very long NBA bench of random guys.

Main priority now is to not burn futures chasing after defensive upgrades to try and salvage this poor roster.

You know missing the playoffs wouldn't be too bad this year. We still have our 1st and have merceneries we could trade to get more draft capital and right the ship a bit that was absolutely screwed over by dubas.

We can potentially trade klingberg, domi, bert, brodie, all pending UFAs (also potentially Willy with a secret handshake that we will sign him as a UFA 10AAV x 7).

Draft well and then you have some cheap ELCs helping out in a couple years (at least we will hit on 2 to 3 of the X amount of draft picks); when we can really push for a cup run for at least 3 years with Matthews still under contract.

Trading for upgrades now IMO will be really stupid. We don't have space that means we will ahve to overpay for retentions no more dubas era bullshit

Biggest issue is why change our defensive scheme when we were a top 5 team in goals against?

Now they are running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Tre changed what was working and added assistants that wanted to change defensive schemes.

Now we’re back to having to outscore teams every night. Reminds me of the days with Wilson here.

Keefer spent years to make their stars play defence. Made it a priority….now someone (Tre) changed it

Not one of his signings were considered even good defensive players

These guys play what, 3 games a week or so? Say roughly 20 minutes of ice time per game, so one hour total per week which averages out less than 10 minutes per day on average. These guys are getting paid millions of dollars, is it too much to ask them to play as hard as they can for ten minutes a day regardless of what the fans who are paying their salaries do?
They play about as hard as they can. Which player could do more with the ability they have?

No, I never said anything close to "make the playoffs at all costs". I said don't be happy about not making the playoffs.
It would be nothing but a horrible outcome that shouldn't be a possibility right now.

We're not going to be bad enough to get a Matthews, even if one existed in this draft. There's a big difference between non-playoff benefits when you're tanking and rebuilding vs. when you're supposed to be contending with a core in their prime.

Our drafting and development isn't the issue. In fact, we've got multiple ELCs helping the team right now.
The problem is primarily the guys we decided to sign this offseason.
With a little luck, you can end up like Tampa and Col did in a down year and hopefully scoop up a Makar or a Point.

Odds are slim, but if things did go off the rails they have assets they can unload and BT can try and figure it out for next year.

I highly doubt it will end up going that way but who knows

there is nothing this team can do to fix their issues this year. They will ride and die with this team and can blow it up next year.

This is the year to miss the playoffs if there was any year. We have the 1st rounder and pending UFAs in

- Domi
- Klingberg
- Bertuzzi
- Brodie
- (and Nylander with a secret handshake deal that we will sign him as UFA at 10AAV x 7) if it comes to that.

Next year is a bad year to tank IMO we don't have many picks and also don't have a 1st that we traded to get freakin' McCabe

If they are not in a playoff spot on US turkey day, I would start selling.

Yup!

If we have to wait till the TDL for increased prices then I'd be fine with that too.

People are overthinking. IMO taking a step back one year to take many steps forward isn't a bad thing.

Even Tampa missed playoffs and then used that year to re-tool/re-plan and got decent help out of it that helped them win the cup

I think that once Nylander signs a $10M contract, he'll start to coast and take many games off.
That's your opinion, which is fine although I don't think that will be the case.

Other question - why did you omit Tavares?

It's looking like a patched up transition year - which speaks to the one year contracts.
If we wanna keep Nylander until Tavares contract is up the following year, you just wait until NEXT years patched up transition roster.

It's gonna make this one look like a stanley cup contender.

I bet they sign Nylander, fill holes with rookies and nobodys, struggle next year even worse and are banking on that Tavares cap hit off the team to make a big splash (too bad Marner will eat up a huge chunk of that as well haha)

If the cap increases by 4m, that basically covers both Matthews and Nylander's raises. It is not that dire lol.

Why would anyone want any of that trash? Klingberg would cost assets to dump at this point, Bertuzzi retained 50% might bring back a 2nd but he has an NMC, Domi might bring back what Engvall did, Brodie is in the last year of a backloaded contract and looks broken down.

Leafs have given up 4 or more goals in 7 home games this year which hasn't happened since 1976-77 season for the Leafs.

That’s what happens when you don’t have a blue line. Injuries and the ones remaining are dog shit

I'm not sold that our goaltending sucks. Woll had a bad game, every goalie has one now and then. Let's see how well he plays in his next few games before we start saying he is no good.

He definitely would help our woeful PK.

He's had some great games for sure, but he's had more than 1 bad game so far this season.

Bottom line is, you really think Woll by himself will carry us to a Stanley Cup?

I think Woll is part of a decent tandem, but a 1A needing a 1B.
