No, we're losing pretty much entirely as a result of bad decisions this past offseason.
The only reason it isn't a complete, unsalvageable tire fire is because of good decisions in previous years.

With three injured defencemen, we have one more loss than at the same time last year.
In 2021 we started 7-5-1
In 2022 we started 7-4-2
In 2023 we started 6-5-2.
So yes, if you look at just the start of the seasons, we did lose like this during those years, even with a healthier defence.
Our worst problem seems to be the goaltending - who acquired Murray and Sammy?
I'm not particularly impressed by Tre's acquisitions (although I will give them a bit of time), but to pretend that all the problems are a result of a few minor changes this past offseason is just being wilfully blind. And undignified.

Hey, this team is what it is, 7 years into this Shannaplan and our guys apparently dont know how to play defence, have never heard of Keefe's system, forgot all of a sudden how to play hockey.
Defence is hard work, it's about desire to compete, desire to engage physically, desire to make the other team work for their apples, desire to put team before ego, that is apparently not something in high amounts in the Leafs locker room.
This is a rinse wash repeat team, every, every year we need this group of 10 second Tom's to relearn every thing that was taught to them for the last 7 years, to be scolded like children for not doing the right things right. We know what this team is, they are elite skilled, no desire children. The culture is to wait till your coach rips you in the media , to look for some external person to be the solution.
The team has a long line of former Captains and leaders Spez, Joe, ROR, Gio, ect, to help this team fill that hole of what they lack, but you cant fix holes in individuals by bringing in people that have the qualities you lack. It's no different than finding that girl who makes you feel warm and fuzzie, thinking she completes you but in reality you are still an incomplete person with a girl who makes you feel good. You cant be a complete hockey player by adding other players who have the qualties you lack.
We're probably going to finish around 95 to 105 points, play that game at TDL where we FINALLY get the missing piece. again ... and then miserably fail in the playoffs. When we outwork the other teams, very few teams can hang with us, but work is hard, it's not fun, it hurts but that is in a nut shell what we need to do , work our asses off every night, that is not who we are, a hard working team. Keefe is not a coach who demands hard work.
The solution is pretty clear to most people. IMO the Leafs dont have the stones to do it.

they were a good defensive team as recently as last season
We had injuries in the beginning of other years too, and there's a big difference:
2021-2022: 55.08 xGF% (3rd)
2022-2023: 55.00 xGF% (6th)
2023-2024: 49.04 xGF% (20th)
One of these things is not like the others. In past slow starts, we were still playing well, and running into goalie injuries/struggles, conversion struggles, and some bad breaks to get to records that didn't really reflect our play. And predictably, we shot up the standings after this. This year, we've played like garbage, and have results that, if anything, flatter us because unlike the early going in those past years, our stars are producing and keeping us afloat.
Murray is irrelevant this year, and Samsonov was acquired by Dubas for last season, where he was a top goalie. Treliving decided to re-sign him and go with him and Woll.
And our worst problem is not goaltending. It hasn't helped, but we're only -0.6 GSAx on the season.
Our worst problem, for the first time in years, is defensive play, and Treliving is the one who replaced strong defensive players with some of the worst defensive players in the league this offseason, and they are the ones currently sucking.
The Leafs are 10th in the conference. Not really the cellar, but yes, things aren't good right now, like I said. Amazing how fast bad decisions can sink a great team.
This isn't a great team dude. Wake up, this is tne same joke year after year just told slightly different. I wish I had your conviction for this team, honestly it is admirable.
The team we're watching this year has not been a great team.
We had one. Now it might be gone, because Shanahan had a bad dream and set it all ablaze.
“”Top tier”” teams win more than 1 game in the 2nd round.

That would be the defensively inept group of players that Treliving signed this past offseason; tanking the defensive results of our team.
