It drives me nuts how many people think Marner, Matthews and Willy are irreplaceable. That’s nonsense. Many many teams have gone father then the Leafs in the playoff, and teams have won the cup in the last 5 years without any of our core 4 . How did they do it without any of those 4 let alone all of them .
Just look at Vegas. Who are their irreplaceable stars

Their biggest star was Stone for sitting out all year to come back for game one and give them a ridiculous advantage.

I predicted we wouldn’t come out flying and Ottawa would. It’s just what this team does. Is the GM blind, stupid, or incompetent that he hasn't done a damn thing to upgrade the defence and get rid of useless players. Changes have to be made. We haven't played well and now we're more than a week into the season, the November turnaround isn't happening. The defensive play of this team is so atrocious that we don't win unless we score 5 or 6 every game. When was the last time we played a complete 60 minutes?

Giordano was absolute dogshit. Klingberg is clueless. Woll is not a no.1 goalie. Neither is Sami. Fourth line another goal against. Brodie is brain-dead. Rielly and Marner looked like they were skating in mud. I could go on but I'm disgusted by this team's performance this season and it's not getting better. Reaves trying to get into a fight with 10 seconds left. What good is that going to do? What are you proving? How pathetic is this guy? And yet, Keefe keeps playing him.

This team doesn't care about the paying customers. Another game with 4 or more goals against at home? What does that say about this team. Wake the f*** up Treliving.

We couldn't even properly replace O'Reilly, Acciari, or even Holl and Kerfoot and you seriously think we're replacing Matthews, Marner and Nylander? Dreamland my friend.
Silly me. I was thinking we had competent management

Who is the last defenseman we drafted in the top 3 rounds? Was it Sandin?

Niemela, and he is trending well.

Just young, but he is over PPG in the AHL right now and to me, he kind of resembles Liljegren to me.

Edit... I swear I thought he had 11 pts in 10 games...

still 6 pts in 9 is good for a 21 year old D.

Trade Tavares for the relief. See if someone wants him and explain we are going nowhere soon.

Marner, really good player, should fetch a hefty returning ease our cap issues. Set everything else up and wait for McDavid to come home and sign the contract. Easy.
We can’t trade Marner, his no trade has already kicked in. We are truly screwed

Knies, Robertson, and Minten give me some hope there's some future pieces front so it's not all doom and gloom

For the love of god don't sacrifice the future for patchwork on the blue line though.... nothing wrong with a down year, move some assets at the deadline to restock some prospect capital, and then retool in the off-season.

Pretty simple. Waive Klingberg, Timmins can take his place. He's a better player at both ends of the ice at this point so I just hope it doesn't take the dimwits running this team more than the next month to figure it out.

Many top teams have more then 1 single bloody round
While playing worse than us. That's hockey sometimes. That's why we evaluate the quality of teams by more than contextless and disparate series outcomes.
Losing slightly differently is still losing, and losing in a later round doesn't mean you were better than every team that lost earlier.
Most top tier teams lose in the playoffs. They're still top tier teams, just like us.
There is no winning model. Teams have won with all sorts of cap configurations. and way worse impacts from 50% of their cap.
It just becomes more important to not waste the rest. All of our offseason additions are looking like a waste so far.
That's our problem, not appropriately paying the players carrying us and doing their jobs.

I don't think a single Cup winner had McDavid on it.

But two teams had Pietrangelo on them.

In the past 4 seasons Holl is +54, in the past 4 seasons Klingberg is -84. That's a +138 difference in favour of holl, in just over 3 full seasons worth of games. What you see is what you get with Klingberg at this point, he's a black hole on defense.
They both are terrible. Klingberg was on worse teams and the +\- comes mainly from that. I’ll give you that Holl is probably a bit more effective but I think he is getting way too overrated now that Klingberg is here. If Holl was here instead of Klingberg how much difference would that make overall? Maybe a goal or two on the plus side.

Yeah no shame in down year. If you can get some picks and prospects for the expiring UFAs and some pieces you don't love and reload, re-spend the cap it doesn't have to be any big catastrophe. Just be smart and don't go Cliff Fletcher on this year.
Thing is that Shanahan and Treliving will want to go for it instead thinking they can do what Florida did last season.

Those expecting a sell off in a down year will be greatly disappointed.

For the cap hit of Reaves and Bertuzzi - you could have had a season with Hellybuck as your goalie to try and right the ship. It was there all summer. Sad that the ship has sailed, I’m a huge Hellybuck fan and he would have finally had a legit chance at a cup.

Sigh.
