Every top tier team but one fails in the playoffs every year. Doesn't change the fact that there are multiple top tier teams.
Many top teams have more then 1 single bloody round the past 20 years 5 years with this core 4 An none of them spent 50 percent of their cap on 4 soft forwards.
Whats the point in paying them that much if they cannot get more in the playoffs.
the reason I don’t think you can have any measure of playoff success with that build model is because it has never been done by any team.

You'd have to also think if they were missing blueliners and dressing Marlies they'd at least try to simplify back there but seems like they have 6 guys ice dancing on the blueline doing Lidstrom to Rafalski impressions.
Our system has always been expansive.

I feel like they licked their lips as soon as marquee free agents became available.

Stamkos was their first target, then Tavares.

Would have preferred a plan that didn’t hinge on throwing a huge percentage of cap at a free agent.

I was excited when they signed Tavares, it was pretty cool, and JT has done well to produce as he's aged.

But I said at the time it puts an early strain on the cap situation which we'll feel down the line.

And here we are.

Nonetheless Trev wasted what cap space was available by throwing $4 mill at Klingberg when a d-man like Gustavsson could have been re-signed for much cheaper. Not to mention bringing in a character guy like Reaves for 3 years who can't play anymore.

The worst trade he made to fix his mistake was 13 spots and picking Minten, right? I am trying to think...
Did Tyson Barrie vanish into thin air?

Before Klingberg there was Barrie, except we burned a good quality 2nd line center to get him.

Actually come to think of it there seems like a lot of similarities this season to that 19/20 season before the pandemic.

Who should be the replacement? Guy Boucher isn't the answer.

Kadri was dealt because of Kadri... what was the mistake that Dubas corrected here?

Brodie's regressed to mediocrity
Gio is even more cooked than last year
Berg's been very poor
McCabe when healthy is a mediocre 3rd pair D
Lilly isn't anything more than a 3rd pair D

so outside of Rielly we basically have 5 3rd pairing D , ain't going anywhere with this group
Gio has been good overall but again being asked to do to much and not great tonight. Agree on everything else. Leafs will need a couple trades as there is nothing in the system thanks to Kyle Dubas.

Knies, Robertson, and Minten give me some hope there's some future pieces front so it's not all doom and gloom

For the love of god don't sacrifice the future for patchwork on the blue line though.... nothing wrong with a down year, move some assets at the deadline to restock some prospect capital, and then retool in the off-season.

This team just isn’t very good. Domi is a downgrade from Kerfoot and Klingberg is making y’all miss Holl. We’ve got 3 superstars, Rielly, a good rookie and then a who??? ‘s who of the league. No depth, no defense, and shaky goaltending. We look like a bubble team on our good nights.

If the slide continues another week or two, the wheels really might come off.

These are the Leafs of course, so who knows, but I predicted a retool this summer and so far that’s where we’re headed.

Treliving spent over $12mm on three players who really haven't helped.

Rielly-liljegren

Or
rielly-McCabe
hafinin-brodie
gio-liljegren

would be fine, just one move and get everyone falling in the right spot

It drives me nuts how many people think Marner, Matthews and Willy are irreplaceable. That’s nonsense. Many many teams have gone father then the Leafs in the playoff, and teams have won the cup in the last 5 years without any of our core 4 . How did they do it without any of those 4 let alone all of them .
Just look at Vegas. Who are their irreplaceable stars

Yep.

Horachek it and spend wisely in the summer.

I was referring to McCabe and Lily. McCabe has only played 6 games and one shift of the 7th. The D is over taxed big time. Gio started off the year playing 15 minutes per game. He’s been averaging over 20 since McCabe went out. it’s not a good defence particularly but it’s been much worse since the injuries. It’s also the same D corp as last year except Klingberg who sucks replaced Holl who wasn’t much better if any.

In the past 4 seasons Holl is +54, in the past 4 seasons Klingberg is -84. That's a +138 difference in favour of Holl, in just over 3 full seasons worth of games. What you see is what you get with Klingberg at this point, he's a black hole on defense.

We couldn't even properly replace O'Reilly, Acciari, or even Holl and Kerfoot and you seriously think we're replacing Matthews, Marner and Nylander? Dreamland my friend.

Yeah no shame in down year. If you can get some picks and prospects for the expiring UFAs and some pieces you don't love and reload, re-spend the cap it doesn't have to be any big catastrophe. Just be smart and don't go Cliff Fletcher on this year.
