If this is all Davidson was up to what was the f***ing point?

The scouting trips of Colorado farm + KD in person several games

We got jackshit for facilitating this deal, utilizing retention spot (Now only have 1) and moving Hall

I assume KD fanboys will be jumping thru hoops to defend this
Come down off the ledge. What did you think Hall (who you were going to have to retain on if he was going to be moved) was going to bring? I would have hoped half retained Hall would bring a late 2nd and we retained on Ranto instead and got essentially that late 2nd. That was ALWAYS best case scenerio on Hall. As far as only 1 retention slot....newsflash...we have literally no one we can use that retention slot on anyways. Only guys making any money that might have interest to a playoff team are Jones or Murphy and we are not likely to trade both as one around to pair with the young LHD while we wait on Lev and Rinzel to marinate is still needed another season.

the return for hallamania is within expectation. dude's done nothing, and is essentially just a bottom six lottery ticket for any real contender. no return for the 50% retention is indefensible. there has to be unspoken future considerations here for this to be anything more than an outright favor kd is doing for colorado and carolina.

He really isn't. You are thinking of a Taylor Hall from years gone by

Bubble teams and contenders always have a few who overpay at the deadline. That's why you stack your chips.

A lot can happen before March 7th.

The fact that all these posters think value of depth guys is something set in stone in January is mind boggling.

Hall is the classic "wait until the deadline" type guy. If you don't get your 3rd? So what, it's not much to begin with. This team once paid 1st/2nds for middling rentals and it worked out.

Yeah this seems weird for now. All that in person scouting for just this?

I guess if it's a 2nd coming back for this retention+Hall stuff, everyone would be happy. Well, it is a 2nd basically, just a late one.

I agree I think it couldve been maximized a little better, but not by much. And we risk getting nothing, so I think I'm fine.

KD definitely seems the type that would rather get a little less, but have the trade in the bag. It's one way to go, although I prefer value squeezers. But those do end up missing out as well from time to time for sure.

Now if there is no Jones trade I will be extreeeeeeeeeeeeemely bummed man. This Crosby rumor scares me, come on Colorado....

Btw this Rantanen for Necas++ feels like the Tkachuk for Huberdeaux deal. That's a big big package for Rantanen, Caroline better be getting the long term signature.

Would be super troll hawks if we swooped in and sign Rantanen in the off-season lol. Not likely of course anymore unfortunately.

Hall alone is worth a third. Veteran winger pacing for 45 points on a piss poor team.

Value-wise, we retained 50% on Mikko for nothing. And to make things even worse, why are we trading Hall in January for this package?? Let the contenders duke it out at the deadline and hedge your bets.

Mains boards are bamboozled by this trade for us and the Athletic gave us an F, and honestly rightfully so. Seems like KD just wants to do his buddies favours to build goodwill for the future since I can't think of another rationale for this. Take a mf'ing risk KD. Sick of his high floor safe draft picks and then a pointless trade like this

Okay let’s try to break this down from a Hawks perspective.

They trade Hall and dump his full 6 million.

They retain 4.75 million on Rantanen’s contract.

The obtain their own third in this trade.

They send someone called Nils Juntorp to the Avs

So this trade is basically like retaining an additional 1.75 million than they could have on Hall’s contract to get what is likely to be the 65th or 66th pick in the draft this year. Probably would have been a late third if not for the extra retention.

Idk, it’s not some huge win or anything, but the value seems about right. I think people are seeing so many details that they’re not really understanding what happened for the Hawks at least. It’s certainly not something to get angry about or claim Davidson is the god emperor or the absolute worst GM ever.

No one was taking Hall’s full contract on for a third. Don’t know what to tell you bud.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

They trade Hall and dump his full 6 million.

They retain 4.75 million on Rantanen’s contract.

So this trade is basically like retaining 1.25 million on Hall’s contract to get what is likely to be the 65th or 66th pick in the draft this year.

Idk, it’s not some huge win or anything, but the value seems about right. I think people are seeing so many details that they’re not really understanding what happened for the Hawks at least. Very much agree with this.

Could it have been a little bit more? Sure. But not by much, so can't really go crucifying.

The Jones is the one that's the important one.

I'm not as mad as everyone else. I think Hall without the retention stuff is probably getting a 3rd out of a playoff team. The Hawks 3rd is 66th, functional equivalent of a late 2nd. I get the retention piece means a lot for Carolina but basically nothing for Hawks.

At end of day, I don't love it, but it's just haggling over pennies regarding a pending UFA that everyone knows isn't that good and not something I'd be too worked up over.

The Avs and Hurricanes NEEDED the retention for the trade to workout. Play some hardball if you're KD. Just seems like a young GM tripping over his feet to gain favour of his peers

His cap hit doesn’t change throughout the year. It’s 6 million in October and 6 million in March.

But his salary is pro-rated and his value at deadline is inflated by the fact that his contract is off the books come summer. He's a rental, that's the whole point of rentals, they're over-valued because it's their last year on the deal. If he "gets injured" a team can literally bank his cap hit and slot him for any actually injured player come playoff time. (and vice versa, cough cough)

This is how cap shenanigans work and why guys like Hall are very often seemingly overvalued...not because he's great, but because he's ideal for the situation. Everyone supporting this move keeps reducing it to "Halls' value" as a player, not his value as a rental.
