I'm not as mad as everyone else. I think Hall without the retention stuff is probably getting a 3rd out of a playoff team. The Hawks 3rd is 66th, functional equivalent of a late 2nd. I get the retention piece means a lot for Carolina but basically nothing for Hawks.

At end of day, I don't love it, but it's just haggling over pennies regarding a pending UFA that everyone knows isn't that good and not something I'd be too worked up over.
Just don’t see it as good use of assets. I don’t think trading 34 and 50 for 27 was a good use of assets. I don’t think moving up two slots in the draft months before the draft for a second is a good use of assets.

It adds up after a while when you do stuff that “doesn’t really hurt, so oh well”

Possible rationale for KD:

1) The question I just can’t get answered online is… since Rantanen is now getting a check from the Hawks, are Hawks eligible to give him an 8th year?
2) is there a separate deal that will make this trade click and make sense (e.g. Jones to Col)
3) why facilitate this deal? What’s in it for us? Well maybe KD is betting Carolina can’t sign Rantanen because they are a poverty franchise.
4) does KD want his draft pick back to offer sheet someone this summer?
1) No, only Carolina can give an 8th year

2) and 3) who tf knows

4) No. Our 2026 picks would be used for any potential offersheet not our 2025 picks.

Davidson didn’t spend all that time in Colorado deciding if he wanted to retain or not. Either they were trying to get Rantanen or they were talking Seth Jones. Not sure how we’d try and get Rantanen with nothing to trade so I lean the latter.
Thought I read that he was only out there to see Thompson and ended up staying for a couple of avs games because the hawks had a break in the schedule

is Thompson even an above average prospect? Why would KD be out watching him in person

the value of retnettion has dropped the last couple years. to many teams have end of year cap space and or LTIR space. there are buyers that even will help retain on Expiring deals. the real value on retention is in multi year deals. its only a 3rd but its our 3rd which 66 or 67 the last 2 years we got Lardis and John mustard in that range

Must sign by August 15, 2026.

Decision is:

1) sign him this year or let him go back to college and potentially be an August 15 UFA if he takes it down
2) if sign this year, sign when college season ends and burn a year or try and sign in offseason
3) if sign when college season ends, give him end of year nhl or ahl games?

Then there’s David Carle. Then there’s also possibility of just a front to scout Avs and their minor league games.

@OviClapBomb posted on Twitter that he had a source that said the Dallas and the Hawks have been talking about a possible Seth Jones trade they felt there was a 90% chance he would be treated by the deadline.

Reading TSN Crosby moving is not happening. Better chance of Jones being traded to them if Davidson has been scouting them so hard.

My current daydream scenario is the Avs saying f*** it, and going absolutely all in.

Mittelstadt, Drury, Gulyayev, 1st for JT Miller
Manson, Wood, Ritchie for Seth Jones @7M.

Drouin - MacKinnon - Necas
Lehkonen - Miller - Nichushkin
Parssinen - Ross - O'Connor
Kiviranta - Kelly - Wagner

Toews - Makar
Girard - Jones
Middleton - Malinski

It would make sense to go all in for this right? Right?!

Honeslty, I would be willing to trade Jones for absolute scrap parts like Malinski, Kylington, Wagner whatever combo if we managed to get Ritchie in the process. Retain heavily too. Also just to get rid of Jones finally, jesus christ.

One can dream.

would more of less pay for a good chunk of the CB extension if they get SJ off the books with no real long term money coming back

I can see the Oilers or Boston trying to improve their PK/center depth by trading for Dickinson. He's probably one of the most sought out centers at the deadline if available. Should fetch at-least a 1st

At this point, I would be open to trading anyone older than the age of 23 just to open up roster spots for those below the age of 23.

Dickinson is a pretty tough sell with a cap hit of 4.25 for another season (as in not a pending UFA that fall off the books). He is not THAT good on draws/defensiviley to take that cap hit for another year when he is on pace for 23 points/82 games even if the cap goes up a bunch. You won't sniff a 1st without retaining half which I am ok doing if there isn't a bigger move to be had with the last retention slot for Jones or Murphy.

I completely disagree. Getting 2 playoff shots with a 3rd line C/PK specialist at 2 million is worth a lot. A late 1st round pick really isn't that much for a guy that you can slot in as a neutralizer. People overrate the value of a late 1st round pick. If that pick ends up being as good as Dickinson, that's a huge win for the organization

Got to keep Dickinson and Foligno. You could even make the argument of resigning Donato if the price is right. How many more draft picks do the Hawks need before KD starts dealing them to move up 5 slots.
