Hall isn't going to get more than a third with how he has been. They essentially did him a solid and swapped his $6M salary for $4.5M of Rantanen's, opened a forward slot for someone else in the system, and got back their own third rounder, which will be 33-36th overall.

Possible rationale for KD:

1) The question I just can’t get answered online is… since Rantanen is now getting a check from the Hawks, are Hawks eligible to give him an 8th year?
2) is there a separate deal that will make this trade click and make sense (e.g. Jones to Col)
3) why facilitate this deal? What’s in it for us? Well maybe KD is betting Carolina can’t sign Rantanen because they are a poverty franchise.
4) does KD want his draft pick back to offer sheet someone this summer?

Agree with above that retention likely worth less as cap has been going up.

I just like the deal because it opens a spot for a prospect, and the difference between a late 2nd and our 3rd is almost negligible.
