The whole point of stacking up trade assets for the deadline is hoping for some overpayment(s).

If you don't get one and have to fold your cards? Okay. But I'd rather risk folding for an overpayment than unload guys early with a crap ton of retention on someone else.

Hall isn't going to get more than a third with how he has been. They essentially did him a solid and swapped his $6M salary for $4.5M of Rantanen's, opened a forward slot for someone else in the system, and got back their own third rounder, which will be 66-69th overall.

Not our money. No biggie. Perfectly fine.

Sure, but if Colorado was retaining on Rantanen (presumably important to Carolina to get him at 50%) they'd be up another $5 million. Perhaps it's unrelated, perhaps not
