I know the 2023 draft hasn‘t even been done yet, but I think that it would be interesting to talk about the 2024 NHL draft.

This thread‘s purpose is to gather all your rankings throughout the next year, so you can see how your views on certain players changed throughout time.

I’ll start off the thread with a top-64 feel free to use it as a baseline for yours.

here are my initial thoughts for the draft. It is a clear top 4 in my opinion, all 4 guys could have a claim at the title by seasons end. Demidov is unlikely because of him being Russian but he is very talented.

if you need a defender, THIS is the class. it is one of the deepest blueline draft I can ever remember. honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if 5 of the top-10 consist of defenders when all is said and done.

I’d like to point out that Norway has never had an NHL draft pick selected higher than 42nd overall, and they have never produced a first round pick. This year the country has 2 of the best prospects the nation has ever produced in Michael Brandsegg Nygard and Stian Solberg who could both be first rounders. It’ll be an interesting storyline to follow moving forward for the nation.

Thanks mate, I have revised it since then.

Here it is if you wanted to have a peak, I posted this on August 8th.

I would definitely have some changes since then, the notables being Silayev being in the late first and his teammate Nikita Artamonov in the early second. Surprised would be an understatement for most of the scouting world on these kids, I’d like to see how the rest of the season shakes out before I rank them any higher. Hot starts are frequent with prospects playing in a new league, but once the rest of the league figures them out it can be difficult for them. Wait and see for these kids for me.

Liam Greentree would break my top-20, maybe top-15 to be honest now. He has been driving the Windsor offence through their first two games and is a big body who uses it really well to win puck battles and gain body positioning in many different circumstances. He is a projectable player and a kid I’m sure some NHL teams will fall in love with.

Väisänen would rise up my list a bit and Kiviharju would fall off it completely. He would be a second round prospect for me at this point.

Hutson would fall a bit also.

Terik Parascak has had an insane start to his WHL career. I’d need to watch more film on him and it looks like his start is based on how dominant Prince George has been as a whole so far this year, but those numbers are eye popping for sure.

Luke Misa has looked electric in the shifts O have watched, although don’t know how his game will translate to the NHL. Promising though. Sam O’Reilly has looked good for a first year player too, although it’s early tp say anything yet,

Those are a few of my thoughts early in the season.

Cayden Lindstrom is a centre.

As for Elick, I don't think he has the offensive tools to be taken that high. I think teams will take him high for his size, right-handedness and toughness.

Not to nitpick (sorry, I will) because I generally agree with your point, but it's not the offensive tools. He has Will Skahan three spots lower (who I think is terrific), and he's not an offensive guy either.

It's the puck game of Elick that worries me. If you get a top 4 DFD at 16, I don't think you're too upset with that. Being slightly big, right-handed, skating well, solid defensively, and being tough only goes far enough if you have enough capabilities with moving pucks to not pin your team in the zone every time a team throws the puck in behind you and makes you attempt an exit.

Can Elick successfully exit the puck at the NHL level? What I've seen makes me think thats up for debate.

I had him written down in my spread sheet as a winger at the time, I have since updated that information, Demidov as well was changed to the wing from centre. Thank you.

As for Elick, I think I can agree with you - his offensive arsenal isn’t something to write home about, he isn’t one to drive the play, or create a multitude of chances by himself. That being said - big, mean right shot defensive defenders are players that NHL teams have time for, and players like Elick are kids that internet scouts often times overlook because of their perceived lack of offensive upside even though they’re quite projectable into the NHL.

2025 looks to be one of the strongest classes ever for Sweden
Definitely! However, a lot can, and will change until then. Personally, I’m not too sure about their current top prospects such as Frondell and Ekberg (amongst others). Depth-wise they should stellar though.

This is my top 10 right now. Be in mind, I haven’t had a chance to watch a ton of prospects this early in the year. I am also basing Demidov’s ranking entirely based on what I saw last year.

What about Gridin? 1.70 PPG in USHL (Connelly - 1.36, Hage - 0.78, Boisvert - 1.10). I'm interested in your opinion about his weaknesses, if you rank him so low.

It's still early so I wouldn't be surprised if Gridin is much higher by June or even January for me. I wasn't high on Gridin in the past so there might still be some bias there from last season, which factored slightly into the rankings. If I had focused on just this year, it's likely be about 10 spots higher.

In terms of weaknesses, he's quite well rounded but I don't think he's elite anywhere so it's tough to analyze those types of players for me. I watched one game against the Steel where they did a great job shutting Gridin down, so maybe I just didn't watch his best games. I expect next ranking he'll be a bit higher when the D-1 factor wears off. (For one, Eemil Vinni as my top Goalie is partially based on what he did last year. Still would be Top 2 regardless if I focused on this year but perhaps Kirsch overtakes him by a few spots or it's closer)

Out of interest why are you so high on Hage compared to his USHL peers Connolly and Boisvert
I think Hage has a very strong well-rounded game like Gridin but he's a much more advanced offensive option in my view. He was a top 10 guy for me before his injury and I think he's come back well since then. He's a high IQ forward who can contribute as a goalscorer and playmaker, which is something I value.

I think Connelly has a bit of a predictable game, likes to take the puck down the ice for a scoring chance. Feel he does it multiple times in a game where he'll just hold on to the puck, even with open passing chances, because he wants to score. When it works out it's great, but I think he uses that move a bit too much. It almost reminds me of a basketball player who loves to be "the guy" and plays constantly in ISO.

Boisvert I feel is a good player, but I think he's just an average skater right now. Possible he makes it into my 1st round in the future, but he's still a little r, and like I said, early on there's a bit of an admitted bias towards maturity.
