vladdy's milb lines are not just awesome, but are perfect.

he hits for average without too much babip help.
he hits for power but doesn't strike out at all.
he walks a ton.
he hits line drives and rarely misses when he swings.

it's not just a great line (like many of those other names just mentioned), it's a perfect line.

I would say that, right now, it's almost perfect. The power is missing since moving to Dunedin, but that will come.

Lmao.

Discoverer, remember when you would get upset about me calling players ridiculous names. Tell me that some (most) of those aren't significantly worse.

The situations are a bit different, but yeah... those are some doozies. It's kind of funny that the league is marketing it as "Look at all the personalities we have to offer!" and then the nicknames are about as uncreative as possible.

I mean... I want Teoscar Hernandez to be known exclusively as Dot Com, but I'm not trying to push it too hard.

how come? he's having a really good year

The market tanked for 30+ power hitters last off-season. He is having a good year defensively which i think is an anomaly. He is in the midst of a 2 WAR season which should put him right with Trumbo who got 37M over 3 years - something i am sure Baltimore regrets as with all the earlier and later 30+ signings off the off-season. Bautista, Morales, Holliday, Beltran, Desmond and Cespedes for earlier and Edwin, Trumbo, Napoli, Moss, Saunders, and Wieters for later. I think only Reddick had worked out but he was 29 when he signed but i can see the Astros regretting that deal as soon as next season.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.as...,4467,3057,3892,9981,6876,4298,9957,4969,9911

16 batters that cost 470M in total or 190M just this season on the open market have accumulated for 0.9 WAR.

I just think GMs might have devalued the 30+ power hitter last off-season and that is even more justified after what those guys above have done. Only Justin Turner has been good but he is able to bring something to the defensive side of the ball.

But all it takes is one GM to offer Bruce 3 year or 30m+ but i just think whoever does might be making a huge mistake considering his WAR in 3 seasons prior -0.8, 0.1 and 0.9.

And he is getting less strikes to hit;

Vladdy:
2016 (Rk ball): 68% of pitches he took/seen were strikes
2017 (A): 60%
2017 (A+): 55%

Bo Bichette has been seeing the same amount of strikes from A ball;
2016 (Rk ball): 78% of pitches he took/seen were strikes
2017 (A): 63%
2017 (A+): 66%

fair enough. i was looking more at his overall line so far. but yeah the power outage is a blip, and he won't maintain his 18.2bb% either i don't think.

but the power outage is already over for the record....

They seem to have embraced the inner hockey culture of Canada with all those <name>-y, <name>-er, and <name>-sy type nicknames.

I also love that Osuna has "No panic" because presumably "no worries" or "Osuna Matata" would've brought down the swift and bloody wrath of the Disney copyright law enforcers.

I also would've considered buying one of those light blue hats if they had the regular logo on it instead of the maple leaf one.

Yep. I don't disagree with anything there. He got his first homerun and he's been piling up the doubles lately.

And the sample size is small enough that when he hits a pair of homers tonight the ISO will be right back to normal.

I hope they made a lot of Cogs - 7 jerseys. At only $200 a pop I can't see them lasting long.

He started off "slow", but Guerrero's last 11 games are hilarious.

49 plate appearances
28.6 BB% and 8.2 K% for a 3.5 K/BB ratio (!!!)
.400 AVG, .571 OBP, .629 SLG for a 1.200 OPS and a 251 wRC+

Dear god... if his power ends up being anywhere close to what scouts believe it can be...

His wRC+ on the season is up to 151 now. If you're into comparables, here are all the 18-year-olds with at least 100 plate appearances and a wRC+ over 100 at high-A since 2006:

Mike Trout (117)
Jose Tabata (116)
Wilmer Flores (112)
Chris Marrero (106)

No one has come remotely close to what Guerrero is doing. If you include 19-year-olds in the discuss as well, he's still easily among the Top 10 (with Bichette, too).

Evan Gattis having Bull instead of El Oso Blanco, and Mike Trout using "kiiiiid" should be punishable. At least Kyle Seager got it right with his nickname (Corey's Brother).

It's cheap gimmick and I hate gimmicks.

It's something that my middle school students I coach would think is cool.

For a league so enamoured with the tradition of its game and sport, I can't believe they are going through with something like this. I'd love to know who in the marketing department thought this was a good idea. And why Manfred would even allow for this. This is XFL territory.

A lot of baseball fans are kids.

While I agree that this promotion is mostly really dumb, I don't mind that they're at least trying to cut the tether on the stuffy, overwrought level of traditionalism that baseball tends to engender. I respect all the tradition the sport has over a hundred years of operation, but sometimes I feel like the weight of traditionalism in baseball sometimes can be alienating for fans because it presents that historical clinginess as an insurmountable fence.

I can see no harm in them doing it in order to build up some players that they can market as faces of the franchise/league. They also get to pimp out their shoes which is a pretty big deal to some of these players, allowing them a little more leniency with the uniform rules and to put their own personality into the game. Some of these guys (like Pearce) don't seem to really care about it, but some of the more flashy ones are going to have some fun with it.

I've found a favorite so far:

Nationals reliever Sean Doolittle, whose jersey is "DOOOOOOOO" with all 8 "O"s

EDIT: honorable mentions to Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr, who's going for some cross-branding with "Carl's Jr" and Kyle Seager, who clearly has monopolized his family's sense of humor. Corey Seager is among the 58 nickname-less players (or 59 if you count Jed Lowrie going lazy and just using "Jed") . Kyle meanwhile had some fun with it by putting "Corey's Brother" on his jersey.

Also laughed at this:

https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2017/8/9/16119754/mlb-players-weekends-nicknames

The Orioles and Cards are the stuffiest of the bunch, each with 8 players using their regular names. Included in there is a very disappointing Brett Cecil.

The <name>-y/er/sy has been around for years in the sport too. Dad played competitive ball around North America and it was the same thing just about anywhere. His nickname was Dougy and the nicknames didn't vary much from player to player.

I hope Carlos Ramirez gets a call up soon. Great AA numbers. WHIP was .72 in 23 innings. He got called up to AAA. His first outing 2 innings no base runners and 4 SO.

Tellez was 2 for 4. Hernandez 0 for 5 with 3 S). Maybe trying to impress too much with the team?

Also Buffalo faced Drew Hutchinson.

Danny Jansen. What a crazy year.

360pa, 8.9bb%, 9.4k%, .344babip, .326avg, .147iso, 147wrc+

and by all reports a solid defensive catcher and gamecaller. and he's gone from slightly old for A+ to slightly young for AAA now, and is still thriving.

he might be one of the best catching prospects in baseball.

but the craziest stat of all of his stats this year has to be the insane fact that he has only swung and missed at 3.3% of his pitches seen this year.

3.3%.

Can anyone else find a number like that for any other prospect? vlad and bo are amazing in their own right but have swst rate around 8-9%, which is great. the best i can find is mookie betts posting around a 4.0% rate at 21 between AA/AAA.

but 3.3%?
