With the age and health concerns of many guys on our roster we really should be investing a bit of money into the bench. I don't know how good Jansen or McGuire will be in their first year in the majors but Martin could be a solid mentor. The argument could be made that they could use more reps and at bats in the minors though. It'll be interesting to see what path Atkins goes with in terms of their development.

As a side note i fully expect the Jays to sign Jay Bruce this offseason. Hopefully its not a long term big money deal. I think the Morales contract is what i'd expect for Bruce.

I agree. Goins and Barney were fine utility players but they cant fill in for a long period of time. They need to invest heavily here if they want to contend and if they intend on having Tulo and Travis as their middle infielders.

Jansen and McGuire arent my first choice but most FA options are either too good to be Martin's backup or are 35+. I also read on here that we will have a lot of catchers available via the rule 5 draft (McGuire, Jansen, Pentecost etc. - someone can correct me if i am wrong). So with Martin having 1 more year after 2018 i dont see the harm trying to go younger at the position. Should still have Maile somewhere in the system and sign minor depth.

Personally i dont see Bruce getting anything close to 3 years or 11M per but i could be wrong...

Saunders is having a nice little resurgence in Buffalo too.

His last 7 games; 12 for 30, 5 doubles, 1 HR, 1 BB and 3 Ks, 204 wRC+

Seems to be putting the ball in play a lot.

With the Aoki addition i doubt Saunders gets on this team unless the Jays trade or DFA an OF or someone gets hurt.

Which seems to be inevitable

Players are wearing their nicknames the weekend of Aug 25-27....Pearce's nickname? Pearce.

The Jays have already acknowledge that there are two 'Mailes' in there. MLB graphics person screwed up. Travis nickname is "The Babby"

Meh. I think he's going to be a superstar, but it's not like it's anywhere remotely close to a given. Based on historical precedents, I don't think that's an outlandish thing to say. If you can't project Guerrero to be that good then you can't project it of anyone.

I do too just saying they are so unpredictable. I thought Snider would be a star. Rasmus and Buxton also were future superstars (and Smoak but he's got it together now). Regardless, if him and Bo hit their ceiling, look out. I'm not sure Guerrero sticks at third though.

To be fair, those guys never showed the plate discipline or pitch recognition Vladdy Jr does. They were all also two years older than him at the same level. I think a more closer comp would be if his power never comes and he turns into a (yikes!) Kotchman/Hosmer bat.

Its not as "unpredictable" as people make it out to be. Most of those guys who fail, like Snider, had obvious contact issues and/or holes in their swing which become insurmountable as they get to the majors. I'd be willing to bet that the success rate of players with Vlad's skillset is extremely high: guys who make contact, have plus bat speed, and have plus plate discipline don't fail very often. Of course, players with this tool-set at age 18 are incredibly rare...hence the hype around him.

vladdy's milb lines are not just awesome, but are perfect.

he hits for average without too much babip help.
he hits for power but doesn't strike out at all.
he walks a ton.
he hits line drives and rarely misses when he swings.

it's not just a great line (like many of those other names just mentioned), it's a perfect line.
