Skill will always keep you in it -
The Sen's did not want to go toe to toe with us in OT - they wanted nothing to do with our speed and skill on open ice.
The game was ugly but we got a glimpse of what they can do when they are in the mood.
Need Laine and the missing pcs from our D - we'll be in the thick of it if they decide they want to be.

The sky is still certainly falling, we did not deserve to win that at all, lol. Let's see how the next game goes though.

Think of all the teams that have had a great roster but started a season terribly, then made a coaching change and went on to the Cup Finals

We don't have a great roster. We don't develop players properly and there are only so many 1st rounders we can get. We lack the ability to scout and draft top talent outside the first or we lack the ability to develop that talent. One or the other, or maybe both.

Yeah once our big guns decided they wanted to play it was a different game.

I'm pretty annoyed that these players seemingly have a hard time getting up for and putting in full nights though.

They came through in the end but its not going to work all the time.

We need to continue to get our systems down and .are smarter decisions with the puck.

The Jets don't have a "great" roster. Great goaltender in Helly , yes. Average roster.

Well that wasn't really my point but we have a Vezina-winning goalie and probably 5 top-50 forwards. The only weakness is defence although that's gradually improving since the great purge.

Quick thoughts (big picture edition)...

Normally I review line by line, but tonight I wanted to reflect on some bigger picture issues.

A huge responsibility of a GM (and coaching) is to sort out the potential of their team, and react accordingly. Based on Chevy's moves and Maurice's use of personnel, they are acting like they are going to try to be contenders. How else can you explain Forbort, Thompson, Lewis, Beaulieu playing over Samberg, Heinola, Vesalainen, etc.? But if that's the approach, what's the point of leaving a talent like Roslovic languishing, or not making a move to strengthen the roster. I'm fine with being patient if you aren't in "win now" mode. But then play the young players and build towards next year. I hate that they are inconsistent in their approach.

Another issue I have is that this team lacks identity beyond their top players. Grit isn't sufficient. At the very least, they should have some more speed in their secondary players so they can play with pressure. As it is, they just have a few random, slow players at the bottom of their lineup in D and F.

Okay, some notes on the game...

Wheeler didn't look washed up tonight, on the second game of a back-to-back.

Morrissey was a travesty, until late in the third. He needs to be a lot better.

Niku is quickly playing himself out of the NHL. He has marvelous skills, but just doesn't have "it". Sad but true. Heinola and Samberg should get a look ahead of him now.

Copp is really underrated.

Lowry is back to being who he needs to be.

If the idea is to have Thompson and Lewis for the PK, I have news - they suck on the PK.

Nice to see Ehlers score in OT, but he had another bad game.

Senators post-game thread complaining about coaching:
1) “wrong” personnel choices in OT
2) playing veterans over younger players

Hmmm... sounds familiar.

Good thing they don't venture over to our forum when we are losing games. lol

How'd Niku do... ?

:sarcasm:

No starting the car on this one...

Back on Thursday... and then again back in the 'peg...

Someone mentioned "is it too late for a Trump pardon"...?

With 2 more games in row we should be renamed the Hunter Bidens...

Here's some brightside:

After three games, we're in the hunt. This despite the fact our (arguably) best forward has missed two games and we've not had 2 of our top 4 D.

Also, we've played like shit for 6/9 periods (not including OTs).

MAYBE if we get our guys back and stop playing like dirt, we may have something to cheer about.
