Quick thoughts (big picture edition)...
Normally I review line by line, but tonight I wanted to reflect on some bigger picture issues.
A huge responsibility of a GM (and coaching) is to sort out the potential of their team, and react accordingly. Based on Chevy's moves and Maurice's use of personnel, they are acting like they are going to try to be contenders. How else can you explain Forbort, Thompson, Lewis, Beaulieu playing over Samberg, Heinola, Vesalainen, etc.? But if that's the approach, what's the point of leaving a talent like Roslovic languishing, or not making a move to strengthen the roster. I'm fine with being patient if you aren't in "win now" mode. But then play the young players and build towards next year. I hate that they are inconsistent in their approach.
Another issue I have is that this team lacks identity beyond their top players. Grit isn't sufficient. At the very least, they should have some more speed in their secondary players so they can play with pressure. As it is, they just have a few random, slow players at the bottom of their lineup in D and F.
Okay, some notes on the game...
Wheeler didn't look washed up tonight, on the second game of a back-to-back.
Morrissey was a travesty, until late in the third. He needs to be a lot better.
Niku is quickly playing himself out of the NHL. He has marvelous skills, but just doesn't have "it". Sad but true. Heinola and Samberg should get a look ahead of him now.
Copp is really underrated.
Lowry is back to being who he needs to be.
If the idea is to have Thompson and Lewis for the PK, I have news - they suck on the PK.
Nice to see Ehlers score in OT, but he had another bad game.
