I kind of half hazardly watched this game. 2 points is 2 points. Put them in the bank.
Things I liked:
Copp-Lowry-Appleton, getting us on the board, with a battle shift, when we needed one.
The move Maurice made to reunite Connor with Scheif-Wheeler. Gave us some jump.
The PP, with Connor on the flank, and Wheeler in a bumper position behind the net. I hope we keep this formation, moving Scheif into Stastny's spot, and Laine on the other flank, like the way the shooting options start to open up, and as Wheels is losing his wheels, put the sizeable vet, in a place where he doesn't have use as much speed, but is in a strong puck moving position, and around the net. Like seeing old Josh rip one from the point when we needed one.
Forbort-Pionk, this pairing is starting to look more comfortable in my eyes.
Brossoit's bounce back. Tough start, strong finish, we still give up the front of the net too easy, but he stood in there.
Ehlers GWG. He doesn't seem on to start, maybe he just needed to get some confidence. Beauty dish by Copper.
Things I didn't like.
Perreault starting in the top 6. This gimmick is up. We don't have a true top 6 if Perreault is in it. I also think that moving Copp up takes away from the checking line dominance, though I can't say if this is statistically correct.
I'll say the 4th line, because I can't remember them attacking the offensive zone once. Thompson needs to be better, or get a kick in the ass (i.e pressbox). I haven't been impressed with anyone really on the 4th line to start the season.
The PK. I didn't watch closely enough to have a proper analysis, but we are barely over 50% on the PK for the year, so adjustments please. Getting Appleton out there seems like a no brainer, maybe split up your units to something like Lowry-Lewis, Copp-Apples. Personnel on defense is also a problem, but that's what we have. Getting De Melo back into the lineup this week should reverberate. Morrissey certainly hasn't been his old self on the PK to start, and I don't know if that is because of Beaulieu, or other factors.
Niku's knack for penalties. Being a -, and now leading the team in 2 penalties that have led to goals against is not a strong start to the season. Not going to shit on this guy, but the minutes he got tonight speak for themselves. Like everyone else, you have to wonder if Heinola could bring more.
I predicted Ottawa would be a better team than most had them marked down as, and we've seen signs that they can play. Game 2 of the series should have more intensity.
I enjoyed the company more than the game, but I'm happy about this depleted team finding ways to win.
