Agree. There's a lot of rust that shows up in the puck movement. Players have been off for a long time, they had a very short training camp, and a number of players in new positions / roles. I see sloppy play from a lot of teams, but the Jets have been worse than most. I think getting DeMelo (and Poolman) back into the line-up might help. Also, sharp puck movement are strengths of Heinola and Samberg, so I hope we see them soon.

My underlying hope is that Beaulieu's time in the line-up will last until he meets the game quota needed to make him eligible to fulfill the expansion draft requirements. I believe that he has 6 games left, now...

That would be a dream.

I still think that Heinola draws in first, simply due to his experience in the system, and games played.

I think it's going to be a bit harder for Samberg to get into a game. I see him not getting a game until he plays some in the AHL.

Good point on the expansion draft requirements. We definitely need a dmen to expose. My guess is Miku is also getting games so that he can be exposed as well.

everybody here is like "Whew we stole that one!"

I'm all like...Typical Winnipeg game, flail around like they are being chased by bees , get dominated in all phases of the game...then suddenly someone makes a play and we win......a very typical Jets game.

Samberg made the taxi squad ahead of Heinola, I'm assuming that is consistent with how the org views the pecking order.

If Niku plays as he has so far, I can't see him getting another 21 games. Beaulieu is the most obvious candidate, and as I noted at the time of his signing (2-year extension), I think he was targeted by the Jets as the designated D to expose. So they'll give him at least 6 more games this season so they don't have to expose one of their top 3 (Morrissey, DeMelo, Pionk).

What I would like to see next game:

Conner Scheifele Wheeler
Ehlers Stastney Ves (Assuming Laine can't go)
Copp Lowry Appelton
Harkins Lewis Perrault

I want to go radical - and have 4 pairs, and plug in the remaining based on performance:

Scheifele Connor
Stasny Laine
Wheeler Harkins
Lowry Lewis

Now, depending on health, you have Ehlers, Appleton, Copp, Vesalainen (in my dream lineup) that can plug in on any of these lines. Now you have 3 lines that can score, 4 strong faceoff men, and one shut down line that can actually play some minutes.

This would force Maurice to spread the ice time out a bit more. Of course, it will never happen but would be interesting.

He's our best forward and has been our best scorer for quite some time. Much love for KC for me

He's starting to drive offense this year which is a big step up. So to is Laine which is huge for this team going forward as Wheeler can't do it any longer.

The only issue I have with him is he is still loose with the puck in his end and needs to tighten up there.

A positive thing about the Jets is that they might well have adequate solutions to their main problems within their system now. DeMelo and Poolman will really change the dynamics on D.

THANK YOU!

I'd love to see some analytics surrounding how many times the Jets turn over the puck in our zone or the neutral zone and what the cause was.

Yes, our D has some weaknesses but it's definitely not as bad as claimed to be around here.

Take out Beaulieu and Niku, insert DeMelo and Samberg/ Heinola and I think you have a pretty solid, balanced D corps. Morrissey can't possibly be as bad as he was tonight, Pionk was a lot better, Forbort is a very good 'stabilizer', and Stanley is looking pretty good for having exactly 2 NHL games under his belt.

Our forwards do not handle the wall pressure very well, but I like that they are starting to bump the puck back to the D or into the middle to counteract that. They have to get much better at making decisions 10 feet on either side of our blueline.

To the bolded I commented on that in a previous post once we have DeMelo back in and Samberg and or Heinola in the mix I think our D core gets really solid. In any order Forbort, DeMelo, Pionk, Morrissey, Heinola, Samberg, Poolman forms a deep D core.

I feel like our passing is really off - whether it's bad timing, receiving players not skating or taking the wrong route. When your passing is bad like that, players start trying to do it all themselves which makes it much easier to defend.

Luckily we have guys like Ehlers, Connor, and, usually Scheifele who have the skill to take on multiple opponents and keep the puck. However, those plays die if they don't have support.

Yup our passing is off but I feel our players aren't providing good passing options either. It might just be due to the players still trying to ingrain the new system and will work itself out once they are familiar with it.

Maurice said he wanted to get Heinola a practice first to get the team systems so i would expect to see Heinola fairly soon and Samburg too for that matter.

Patience garsshopper. I'd be happy if he played well for 9-11 minutes next game and go from there.
If he eventually plays 14 or so minutes on the 3rd pair, I'd be more than happy.
In two years we could see...
JMo DeMelo
Heinola Slamberg
Stan the Man Poolman
Kov and Gawanke as our 7 and 8 D men.
Slamberg and Stan the Man on 1PK.

Actually, next game I'd like to see...
JMo Poink
ForBort Heinola
Stanley Slamberg
See which one of the bottom 4 come out when DeMelo comes back but we know we will continue to see Boolow.
Having 3 D in the lineup with a total of 10 NHL games played between them is a VERY bad idea if you plan on winning the game. Thats the kind of stuff teams who are well out of the playoff and are playing to tank do.

so, 3 games in.
mostly boring hockey.
that penalty kill is something else.
still some inexplicable D zone scrambles.
forwards still look lost or lazy or uninspired.
Jets are getting outshot and, for the most part, outplayed.

yet...
yet......

no pre-season or exhibition games.
Jets played one game, waited 4 days, then played back to backs.
so i'm not really sure what to expect resultwise. using the Leafs as an example, how did they fare against the Sens? i expected a lot of rust and perhaps that's what we see it.

yet...
yet....
they had 4 days to work on a penalty kill. Demelo and Poolman being out were not the problems with the penalty kill. the forwards were still doing that stupid in-line formation that makes zero f'ing sense. so has anything changed on the PK? nope.

yet...
yet....

other than one awful PP, the Jets' PP, including zone entries, looked pretty darn nice. some patient puck movement. Wheeler's looked good on the PP (only spot he's looked good).

so i have zero clue where this team will go. i don't think they'll continue to play uninspired hockey. their PK won't be THIS bad for the entire season.
Some slack is warranted I feel. And they didn't really have 4 days. The day after the opener was a scheduled day off, the following day they had a covid scare and out of caution decided to cancel all team activities. Sunday they practiced then flew out as it was a travel day. Monday a pregame skate and play. Not sure how u got 4 days to practise from.

It might be better than going with D that have a lot of bad experience.
Ok if thats what u think fair enough. Now what about the roster? Bringing three guys from taxi squad up at once would force the Jets to waive a player or two. So maybe its just a better decision to bring up a guy at a time to check them out so as not to have to mess with whats already there.

Its three games in my friend. They are 2-1. A little early for drastic changes I would think. Patience is a virtue

I'm not sure based on Maurice's comments. He said he was hesistent to put Heinola in because he hasn't practiced since the World Juniors. He was hesistent to put Samberg in since he wanted him as a left shot with a right handed D.

I got the impression that once Heinola gets some actual practice time he would be an option but would prefer players who were in camp until that time.

That's the most I've ever seen Connor take over a game. Great to see. Good that he was rewarded with the first OT shift.

Scheifele played 22:50 just a night after playing 26:17. Those are crazy minutes for a forward on a back to back. OT played a factor though and an encouraging thing is that he played 3 more shifts last night than he did the night before despite playing 3 and a half minutes less, so he definitely shortened them up after Maurice publicly called out some players for taking long shifts.

The power play is pretty close to what I called for after game one, just without Laine. Hope they keep Connor on the half wall and Wheeler net front/bumper. Morrissey looks like he's settling in on the powerplay as well. Everything looks less predictable now that they're not trying to force the puck to Laine all the time, forcing them to be creative a bit is a good thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Demelo and Samberg come in as a package on Saturday.

Who's on the top pairing?

I think the Jets might want to settle Morrissey down, with De Melo.

I could see Stanley-Beaulieu getting more reps, until Poolman comes back.

I am hoping Heinola will get his first start on Thursday, and then we can see how we do with 2 rookies in the lineup on defense.

I'm not so sure that Samberg doesn't have to play through the Moose first to get up to the Jets, in the organizational scheme.

Yup. Thats a must IMO. If Maurice doesnt do this he is truly clueless.
