I see a lot of people saying trade Matthews on here and everywhere on the internet and Marner too. I don't love the idea of moving Matthews considering our C depth seems pretty weak, but if management feel he won't sign here then you have to think about it. Unless we're getting that 2nd overall pick from Anaheim to take Fantilli and one of their 3 young d men (Drysdale, Zellweger or Mintyukov and 1 of Terry or McTavish and whatever else they think they can get there's not many teams I think would be a good trade partner for us. LA is another and I think most have made that proposal of Clarke and Byfield being the main 2 and me personally would like Thomas but that's just my biased pick and then whatever else. Roster would still be damn good especially if you pursued Bertuzzi pretty aggressively to play in the top 6. Could look something like this:

Anaheim trade

Knies-Fantilli-Nylander
Bertuzzi-Tavares-Marner
Jarnkrok/McTavish-???-Jarnkrok/Terry
???-???-Lafferty

LA trade

Bertuzzi-Byfield-Nylander
Knies-Tavares-Marner
Jarnkrok-???-Thomas/???
???-???-Lafferty

Me personally I'd prefer that Anaheim trade for the forward depth but Clarke does address a need as well would be nice to have and the forward depth still isn't too bad.

Marner trade if that's the move idk what I'd look for yet tbh. I'd have to think about that. Maybe the Anaheim trade except maybe replace the 2nd overall pick for next years 1st and their 2nd round pick this year. Chicago might be a team that'd want to get Bedard a playmaking winger but what do they have except a lot of picks. Raddysh only roster player I like tbh.

Anaheim would be a great trade partner, but they’re building in-house, and they’re already building a hell of a team. They don’t do that

Yeah I probably wouldn't either if I was Anaheim but would be hard not to go after Matthews if he's available

Vancouver's ownership seems desperate to make a splash (despite being a rather mediocre team).

I wonder if they would be willing to empty the cupboards to get Mitch?

The downside is that their assets aren't all that great (with Hughes and Pettersson being off the table) and they are deep in cap trouble, so we'd have to take back equivalent dollars.
It will be JT Miller coming back with picks for MM. but I think they will want a C for JT. Which makes a JT for JT swap more likely.

the only way this team has a chance to improve is if JT goes. Hopefully hes willing to waive his NTC. The Marner thing probably doesnt help us unless we get an elite player back.

I like this, but I would have Acciari in there too. Guy's a gamer.

Columbus. They have some nice prospects. Looks them up if you're not familiar with them. Maybe they're in the mood for a deal for Marner since they lost the Bedard/Fanitlli sweepstakes and have Laine, Gaudreau and Jenner collecting dust.

Maybe Marner for David Jiricek? Jiricek is a beast. A big, physical, net clearing, 2 way d-man with a bomb of a shot. Everything we need and may end up being a 1-D. The only reason I can maybe see them parting with him is because they already have Werenski.

Auston Matthews to Carolina, Toronto gets Necas (or Jarvis) and Pesce back, maybe other pieces involved but those are the roster players.

Mitch Marner to Vancouver, Toronto gets JT Miller and Beauvillier (50% retained) back, maybe other pieces involved but those are the roster players.

William Nylander extended $8.8m cap hit (like his jersey number), as many years as Toronto needs to give him to get the cap hit that low. So maybe an 8 year extension? Pull the trigger on it.

Ilya Samsonov extended 2 years for $6.5m cap hit. Don't go longer than 2 years or higher than $6.5m cap hit. If he won't sign for that, Leafs can leave him unqualified and make him a UFA, and pursue a UFA like Freddy Andersen or Reimer or Bernier (just kidding, Korpisalo or Varlamov). Other options would be a trade. Saros or Swayman or Vejmelka or Carter Hart are wise choices IMO. Hellebucyk is too costly to acquire and not worth extending long term at his age and his salary demands (IMO). If Leafs pro scouts are extremely confident that buying low on Merzlikins or Markstrom would pay off, they could go that route.

Matt Murray to the Blackhawks and give them a pick for taking him. They can either keep him on their roster for this final year of his contract or buy them out. They have the real money and the cap space to easily handle a buyout without any problems whatsoever.

Extend David Kampf
on a 2 year deal. If the cap hit is a bit of a bargain, 3 years.

Extend Zach Aston-Reese on a 1 year deal for $1m or lower.

Sign a free agent 13th forward that can play both center and wing and can challenge Aston-Reese and Lafferty for playing on the 4th line and staying out of the press box.

Sign a free agent 8th D that can either play a bit and spend time in the press box, or can go on waivers if Clifford or some other forward makes the team as a 14th forward.

Anthony Beauvillier - J.T. Miller - William Nylander
Matthew Knies - John Tavares - (Necas/Jarvis)
Nick Robertson - Pontus Holmberg - Calle Jankrok
Zach Aston-Reese - David Kampf - Sam Lafferty
(UFA 13th forward)
Clifford

Morgan Rielly - Brett Pesce
T.J. Brodie
- Timothy Liljegren
Jake McCabe - Conor Timmins

Mark Giordano
(UFA 8th defenseman)

(Samsonov or starter from trade/UFA)
Joseph Woll

After this season, do not extend Giordano or Lafferty. Let them leave as free agents. Try to extend Pesce if possible. UFAs you can make a decision on later when General Manager can see how their seasons went and what the roster/cap situation is are Beauvillier, Brodie and Aston-Reese.

How do you make the playoffs with danault as your 1C?
You have a ~100 pt winger
2 80-90 pt wingers (Fiala and Nylander)
JT (70-80 pt winger/center)

You easily make the playoffs with that team, its basically a better version of the current Kings forward group).

Probably still a 1st/2nd round exit though as the Wingers+JT are still going to choke and we'll lose out on Matthews potential for dynamite games

for me, the defense needs to be rebuilt, as its WAY too 'weak' and far from intimidating.
Under NO Circumstance resign Holl
I'd trade Brodie the day he submits his ten team no-trade list for either picks, prospects, of NHL ready youth with some jam.
Unless Calgary was willing to take him back (with no retention) for Zadorov, thats a deal I'd make.
Using Brodie's $$ sign Gavrikov
Sign Mayfied to play with Reilly (Soucy could also be a target, but, would pref a natural RHD)
I'd want to get at least 2 tough SOB defense first defenders.

as far as Forwards, if he came on the cheap, (and i hate saying this) Domi could be a good #3C option.
I dont resign Kampf, and Bunting is $$ dependant, if he is expensive see if there is an RFA for RFA trade available for someone that may have like upside but a lower price tag (Sprong/Frost)

for wingers i'd check the price tag on Connor Brown

I'm really hopping Minten has developed enough to earn a job, as he has outstanding 2-way hockey sense, and could shift JT to the wing, and JT could have a major impact as a winger and handle spot faceoff duties

Minten is like two years out at best
We have to hope one of our other prospects we're marinading in the minors is ready to step up

U only trade matthews for a McKinnon

U get a coach (Q) that splits up 16-34 and makes them grow a back bone, make them unfortable
If they all wanna stick together then sign contracts accordingly or else out the door
Team is above any player

Extend matthews till McDavid contact expires is my personal choice ;)

But conner hellebuyck if woll-Samsonov isn’t it
Matt dumba for sure
Rielly - mean defensive guy that can skate
Brodie- dumba
McCabe-Lilly/schenn

Gio is 7th if he’s still around

And up front I don’t know lol

Keefe has split up Matthews and Marner on various occasions. Matthews + Marner is better than Matthews + Nylander, and Tavares + Nylander is better in possession than Tavares + Marner without much more offensive output. The only thing is that fewer goals against are scored with Marner vs. Nylander.

Matthews + Marner were huge (together) in getting the Leafs past Tampa. The real issue is that one or both just seem to go on streaks in the playoffs and when they are at a low point, it doesn't really matter who you put them with. They'll bring down the entire line regardless.

Guys, settle down here. The core 4 is staying. Focus should be to add to our top 6 and improve our PK this offseason with hopefully some speed in the bottom six.

Yeah I have no idea what happened with the PK but it probably correlates with the defense not playing particularly well in the playoffs either.

It was top 10 in the regular season.

I think the focus should be on the bottom 6. If we are keeping the Core 4, then the other two guys should be Jarnkrok and Knies. Or possibly Robertson is in that mix. Nobody we realistically can afford to put up there is going to help those core guys any more than they need to just help themselves. Jarnkrok did not do much in the playoffs but he was really good in the regular season and his linemates didn't help him much either, while Knies looked the part of a top 6 forward so he should be used as one again. We only have 1 bottom 6er from last year signed (Lafferty) and we need to figure out replacements for Kampf and ROR especially.
