I can see them being interested in bringing in Nylander for Pettersson’s wing to help convince Pettersson to stay. They were also reportedly looking to dump Garland so this would be a win-win. They don’t need to hold on to 11OA for a 3C.

The murray bullet is just too big i think.. your trade template i think works if nylander is a defence more than nylander

Im not selling nylander short here either.. but this offer is one of those ones where i could see allvin really put in a position to think.. and would have to make other moves to be able to accomodate this

I think the 11oa would be more directly connected to a defence trade

Would prefer a few more additions to the D heading into next season:

Rielly Schenn
McCabe --------
------- Brodie
Gio-Timmins

Trade/Release: Holl/Liljegren/Gustafsson

No offense but moving off of liljegren is dumb
The way he is playing is dumb. If he is pouting because Sandin got traded, then he needs to go too.

I think Keefe has scratched him too much too, but he sure isn't trying hard enough to prove he belongs.

If that is as far as the reason to go.. thats dumb..

A thurd of the team is playing dumb any given period.. but few are as young with as many tools and in a premium position as lilly is

Versteeg thinks he has something with Keefe. Thinks he could be upset for being taken off PP1, and Marner playing 7+ minutes more than him. Time to move him in June.

Rangers will expect a similar package as the Habs paid for Dach (No. 13 and No. 66 picks).

1st. overalls don't always turn out do they?

On any redraft, not sure he makes top 5.

At least he isn't like 2nd. overall Patrick.

2nd. worst 1st. overall past 25?

The poster you are quoting is referring to Liljegren...
Thanks @1specter. That's how I was tracking it as well, that he was referring to Liljegren.

There is no question that Keefe has shaken Liljegren's confidence with how he's been handled, first by calling him out by name and then sitting him.

It's one of the main reasons I think Keefe has to go. We have Liljegren, Timmins, and soon Niemela coming up. If Keefe is going to stifle/damage their development to play oafs like Holl, Keefe isn't who we need behind the bench.

I am deeply concerned about our Defence as early as next season.

Holl has to go, but we are seeing both Gio and Brodie's games starting to weaken as well.

Counting on Gio who turns 40 next season would be a dumb and inexcusable thing to do. I honestly could see him retire after this season.

Brodie also looks like he is slowing down. I think he would be amazing on the 3LHD pairing next season, but I don't see him being able to handle top pairing minutes anymore.

Again, I see this as an error by Dubas for not going out and settling 1RHD, and thinking keeping guys like Holl was good enough. Brodie was fine for a time, but he is going to be 33 next season, and in the final year of a contract with a $5 million cap hat. That's 1st pairing money but he's not a 1RHD.

Honestly, before Treliving was let go in Calgary, there was rumor they'd be open to moving recently extended Weegar. I wonder if there was any substance to that and something that can be revisited? At $6.25, he would be a 1RHD that would mesh well with Rielly and would solidify us for the next 4-5 years.

Other than Matt Dumba or Scott Mayfield, I can't see any UFA d-men who would have as much impact, unless going the trade route. Maybe LA is open to moving a RHD to make room for some of their over-ripe RHD prospects, which they are pretty flush with right now........?

While I do think Liljegren has been mishandled a little bit, he has made the kind of mistakes which have led to his benching long before Keefe started calling him out for it, and he is still making those same mistakes. I think he can work through them, but I can see why Keefe has a tough time trusting him in the playoffs and down the stretch. I think we will be somewhat forced to trust him next year, because he is probably our best bet to get someone as good (or better) than Holl unless we give Dumba a chance to rebound.

That being said, if Dumba does not rebound, then we are getting a guy who was far worse than Holl this year. And Mayfield has never been better than Holl while also being about the same age. Severson is probably the most likely upgrade over Holl on the market, and even he has similar concerns as Liljegren except he is 5 years older. I don't think we bring back Holl because he probably prices himself out, but it is a lot easier said than done to find these high end RD. They are either never available or ridiculously expensive.

Just look at the top pairing RD available on the market since Dubas has taken over. On the UFA market, we are probably only seeing Pietrangelo and Hamilton as guys who are clearly better RD than Brodie available on the open market. Some may also say Faulk but that is probably even. On the trade market, it is pretty much Trouba and Jones, and both look like we dodged a major bullet. Weegar, while being a RHD, has played almost exclusively at LD the entire time he was better than a mediocre bottom pairing defenseman in the NHL so even he is an iffy option. So who else really is there? Ristolainen?

Defense has been an issue in these playoffs, but let's not pretend like defense has been a longstanding issue with this team. In fact, our defense has covered a lot of problems throughout the Keefe era. It just so happens that in these playoffs, they are struggling to make even the most basic plays (both against Tampa and especially against Florida). We can give all the credit we want to Florida and their forecheck, but our defense hasn't even been able to move the puck properly even without pressure. That obviously has to change, and there is very little Keefe or anyone else can really do until that improves. Offense needs to bury more of their chances as well, and Samsonov can't keep getting outdueled by a busier Bobrovsky, but if our defense does their job, then we are on Florida's throats.

Very good post. When you sit back and see what was actually moved and signed it shows how tight it is when you dont develop your own

It also points to how much you have to actually pay in trade if you want that upper level of player and even then you need to ensure you are trading for the right fit not just a 'great player'

Unless we are convinced that Gio is done next year, or that Timmins in not reliable, we may not even need to add any kind of expensive RD next year. We may just need to fill out our #7-9 spots on the depth chart with a couple of RD and a LD.

Really, Schenn could even be one of those guys if we still like him enough. Guess you could do worse for a #7.

And after that, I would assume we still keep Kral even though he has had some injuries and iffy play this year. Hollowell will likely also be kept as an AHL veteran, and I have Rifai getting another AHL deal with the potential to upgrade that to an ELC with a strong first half next year. Mete, Dahlstrom, and Benn should all be let go (too bad injuries killed Mete's chance here but I am sure he gets another one somewhere else)

Rielly - Liljegren
McCabe - Brodie
Giordano - Timmins
Schenn

---
UFA - UFA
Kral - Niemela
Rifai - Villeneuve
Kokkonen - Hollowell

Losing Holl would suck, but it just means Liljegren and Timmins have to step up like he did when he first broke into the league a few years ago.

Agreed.. i dont think we 'need' to... but it adds to the question I flip flopped back and forth with this team for quite some time. Paying the price for that type of defenseman versus keeping the youth that we do have to keep developing players albeit no studs

I like the idea of having the consistent churn of youth replacing from the bottom up

I will agree that the UFA defence market is underwhelming, and not saying that Dumba or Mayfield are nearly sexy enough, but I think Weegar would play perfectly well here on RHD with Rielly.

Kind of a moot point to argue it because I know we won't be seeing it.

I still think there is potential to snag one via trade, with the Kings scenario as an example.

I am still high on Liljegren and Timmins, understanding that they are young players who will make their share of mistakes. The problem with Keefe is he punishes young players for making mistakes, while teams like Boston and Tampa just play them and works through them.

Bottom line, all players, no matter how young or old, offence or defence, will make mistakes. Keefe now has Liljegren second guessing himself, which is never good for any player, and is horrible to do to a younger player. Liljegren has the highest upside at this point of any of our RHD, and he should be given every opportunity to continue his development. Keefe seems very selective with who he calls out, and to do it to keep Holl is just short-sighted and dumb.

Man, if Lou had picked up the phone when he was "shopping" Toews...... Damn.. :(

Boston? Boston has one of the older defenses in the league, with the only "young" guys they've really had consistently in the lineup over the past few years being McAvoy and Carlo... And Liljegren is no McAvoy unfortunately. Vaakanainen, Zboril, etc. have not come in over veterans at any point... And they should not have either.

Tampa does it more out of necessity than anything... Which is probably not much unlike what we will go through next year. I guess they sat Bogosian over Perbix/Raddysh before Cernak went down, but Holl is significantly better than Bogosian so that is not apples to apples. And Cal Foote wasn't exactly coming in over Jan Rutta or any of their better veteran defensemen in years past either.

Now Liljegren is better than those Tampa guys, but Holl is better than all of those veterans I listed too. Overall, I doubt Tampa is sitting Holl in favour of Liljegren either... Although they may be sitting Schenn for Liljegren (or using 11-7 to get both in). We just have too many good RD on the depth chart right now and until Holl was scapegoated after his first round, Liljegren was obviously the odd man out due to the rookie mistakes he still makes in order for the Leafs to have Schenn in the lineup (which has worked out decently well so far all things considered).

I know there is some deep hatred for Holl in Toronto, but there are very few, if any, coaches in the NHL who would sit Holl. There are probably coaches that would still be playing him right now in the playoffs... And right now, Keefe is not one of them. As bad as Holl was in the first round, we are seeing first hand that maybe he was not the problem (or at least the only problem) back there. Gio has arguably played worse in the playoffs thus far, but he was not playing nearly as tough minutes and he is far more beloved by fans and media than Holl so it was ignored a lot more.

Dumba has physicality, but he's not really going to offer much that the D core doesn't already have.

He's an offensive guy first and foremost - with the odd big hit thrown in. He always reminds me of a lesser Phaneuf

If Matty wants out…. I bet Vegas is all over him.
Do they have any major prospects?

How good are hague/white cloud ?

No idea if next year is gonna be mostly the same team, or if the GM makes a few bigger moves, or if everything gets totally blown up. No matter what happens, these are the guys we should definitely be keeping IMO :

Knies - [ *Tavares* ] - xxx
xxx - xxx - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Minten - xxx
xxx - Holmberg - (Abruzesse / Steeves)

Rielly - xxx
McCabe - Liljegren
xxx - Niemela
Timmins

xxx
Woll

* = we can't trade or buyout Tavares, so whether or not we WANT him to be here, he's going to be here. Period.

Not saying Minten and Niemela are gonna be on the team next year, but what I'm saying is, keep them so they can be on the team eventually.

Also, IF you're trying to be a playoff team next year, keep Brodie. He's worth more to us than he would be worth in a trade.

Obviously things can change quickly, but based on what we know, I wouldn't move any of these guys. Maybe we could trade Minten, Holmberg, Abruzesse, Steeves or Timmins if some other team randomly overpays for them. The odds of that happening are very small though.

Looking through potential fits - I think Carolina is the best fit for Marner cap wise. I don’t think they give up Necas right now, nor would I want him. It’s probably a package of Morrow, Jarvis, 1st which is underwhelming.

Seattle could also fit him in and the package would start around Wright, 23 1st but they don’t have any attractive roster players age/contract wise.

Like I mentioned before, we’ll need to refocus on acquiring a top pairing defenceman this off-season.

Keefe is asking and relying on Brodie way too much while his game has slipped these past two seasons.

Rielly - ________
McCabe - Liljegren
Brodie - Timmins
Giordano
