Ok, it's fake, calm down.

I do but that's because I thought Sandin was developing well and was on track to be a good top 4 D. Also only 22 years old, we were lucky to even get him where we did in the draft because if you look at almost everyone drafted around him they're pretty much all busts.

It's also a strange trade to make as a team trying to go all in, you usually move young pieces like that for an established player, not futures. What if he could've been packaged with picks for something more? It's just confusing to me.

And Gus has no place on this team.

considering the Chicago trade made him expendable you would think we would have included him in that trade and kept some of the picks but maybe Chicago had no interest in him and might show teams don't value him that highly

Look, do I wish the Leafs had gotten an NHL quality scoring winger for the left side? Yes. Is it the end of the world that they didn’t? No. Dubas did a lot of good things this TDL, greatly increasing the quality of the centre and defence depth. He even managed to recoup draft capita on an asset that he and the franchise didn’t envision a future for here, in a deep draft to boot.

It’s not ideal that Knies is our great hope for left wing scoring given his obvious lack of NHL experience but there are worse options.

If you’re disappointed the 1st wasn’t move the reality is no one on the market today was worth trading it for. If anything it’s now more incentive to beat Tampa and Boston in the playoffs so that pick is as high as possible.
It's not just Knies, maybe this year yes, hes the great white hope for sure, but he's got man size and strength and has obviously had some success where he is now. I can see them rotating him and Bongrip in game to keep the pressure off of him.

I can see them getting more offense from the bottom 6 now that they weren't getting regularly previously this year so the 2 LW will just need to provide solid defense imo

Any team going on a long playoff run will need depth. 8D seems like a minimum.
We have that + a guy who we want for the future but shouldn’t be anywhere near a playoff roster in his current state of development

a minimum if 8 is about 1 more than the actual minimum you want. But OK. 8. That still means we made a trade today. So again, why haven't we?

By all accounts he was well liked in the locker room. Sure there might be details we don’t know but on its face I don’t see that deal as doing much for our team in this playoff which is the important thing.
He also went to the press last offseason during his contract holdout and complained about not getting opportunities. I'm guessing they were afraid he might do that before they could trade him, which would continue to lower his trade value.

So why not just go with 15 d-men? 18? 20?
We apparently don't need a goalie for insurance but we need a whole lot of extra d-men
Teams use 8 or more Dmen in the playoffs every year. Vancouver used 10 the year they went to the finals.
How often do teams use 3 goalies and still end up in the finals or win a cup.

Here are my grades:

ROR + Accari trade: B+

I hate trading 1sts for rentals. Hate it. If we are going to trade one, a recent Conn Smythe winner who can either make our 3rd line relevant or play on the 2nd line is likely the way to go about it. Wouldn't mind re-signing him too. Accari is a good 4th line add. Great trade, but of an overpayment for my taste.

McCabe + Lafferty trade: A

I hate trading 1sts in general too for non-star players but McCabe is a proven 2-way defenseman signed for 2.5 years at 2M a season. He's Muzzin lite, and should look great beside Brodie in the playoffs. Lafferty I'm meh on, but cheap NHL depth for another season. Feels like he paid a good price, shored up the top-4, and added a guy for 3 runs.

Schenn trade: C

I don't get it. This is a typical Dubas deadline move that the media seem to consistently praise and say "Dubas FINALLY goes after a guy we wanted" essentially. Grit, intangibles, etc. Okay, he's the 9th best defenseman on this team and although he's a good enough #6 at this point, we had no need for that. Asset cost is fine, player is fine. Just doesn't fit any need whatsoever without moving out a defenseman.

Sandin trade: A-

I get it. I really do. If you're not sure about Ras, and based on the usage, Keefe isn't, you have to move him to a) keep him happy and b) ensure you get a great return. Unless you were trading him for an upgrade or multiple pieces that *could* be you're likely losing this
s trade in the long run. A 1st to recoup the two traded, and a guy who's essentially been the better version of Sandin *this season* is about as big a W as you can ask for trading an asset like him. They better use Gus though if he fits in the system. I have it ad a good trade today, but honestly it could look super dumb as soon as tomorrow.

Engvall trade: F

I love getting assets for UFA players, but I have no idea why you'd trade Engvall for a 3rd. At this moment in time there's no better player in the bottom-6, and you didn't acquire someone to replace him. I get people hated the fact he didn't hit, but he was extremely strong at puck removal, defense, play driving, and occasionally had a scoring touch. He's the *exact* player we should have more of, not trade a 3rd for. If it's a money issue, you could have traded Holl and been fine as Holl is arguably the 7th best defenseman on this team now. If it's an internal issue I'd love to know. Anything else? Makes less than 0 sense.

Overall I think the team is improved today compared to the ROR trade, but it seems to be lacking 1 piece in a middle-6 winger that can drive play. Also feels like a waste of assets to hold onto both of Holl and Gus, but what do I know.

I agree with most of this especially the Engvall trade. I get the fanbase hates him but we traded a guy away and didn't get a replacement. We had Acciari, Lafferty and Engvall all at the same time so I dunno why everyone is saying we couldn't have kept them all.

The idea of trading Engvall for Schenn would be okay if not for the fact that we had NINE NHL defensemen without Schenn already.

Well, seeing how Dubas was clearly done I can't say I'm a fan of the Engvall/Schenn trades.

Not a big fan of our bottom six, can't wait to see Holl playing in our top 4 come playoff time.

Imagine if Liljegren sits in the playoffs again lol
If Keefe even THINKS about this, he should be fired on the spot. But no, I expect him to instead press box the Leafs' new non-McCabe acquisitions so he can continue to trot out Justin f***ing Holl again...
