I'd say it would ultimately be a decisive Vegas win if Eichel helps lead them to a cup even though Buffalo ultimately did well from it. It's a win-win trade, with one side having the bigger W

Though I'd be wary of wishing away the 1C so easily.. without a direct replacement coming back the team basically will be hoping they get lucky to get one out of the draft eventually. The Leafs have drafted exactly 1 in the last 30+ years
there's a lot of galaxy brains in here who do not understand this

So if your expert assessment is right then trading a guy you can't compete with is going to not get much in return anyway from knowledgable GMs

Also yes Vegas won if Eichel was the MVP of the reason the sport is played...

oh a player that might be as good as Matthews;
Has just as much potential but I forget we do like to really overrate our players.

Ok I''l wait till he scores 60 goals, wins back to back rockets, a hart trophy and a ted Lindsay trophy; damn man what an overrated player his peers voted him as the MVP

Might go the Ovi route and wait until he's 31 to win his 1 and only cup and that being the only time he ever advances past the 2nd round. Love that for us with all the money we invest in this team!

Will Fantili also have a better career than Ovi? you know the guy on pace to be the all time leading goal scorer, with a cup and conne smythe

Only winning 1 cup and a conn smythe is doable. All time leading goal scorer who knows. The way the game keeps changing, goalies might not have much padding in a few years to make it easier to score. Doubt it but does anyone really care about that if we have post season success?

lmao so have I been lied to about this being the hardest trophy in sports to win?

there has been 57 Conne Smythe Trophies awarded in history and probably well over 10000 players have played in that time frame. You do the math and come back to me on how doable this is. Maybe we shouldn't be overrating 18 year olds who have not even been drafted? or should we just not overrate maple leafs?

I never overrated him. Just said his potential is high. You know, kind of like most players who are good enough to be 1st overall picks but he got unlucky having Bedard in his draft. Crosby won 3 Cups. Kane won 3 Cups. Toews won 3 Cups. You'd think with our core we'd be able to replicate what those teams cores did since I thought we were just as good if not better. If you are drafting someone that high and that good you really don't think it's doable to win a cup with that player? Not guaranteed because I never said that, but doable. Maybe we just accept losing here as long as they win a rocket richard trophy or get 100 points or something I guess.

Sorry - the better point would be: does Buffalo care if Eichel wins a cup? I’d say no. Tuch put up 79 points this year at half the cap hit.
Sure... Both sides kinda win considering how well Tuch is projecting, but the ultimate goal is to build a team to win you a cup, if Vegas wins a cup with Eichel they win this trade until Tuch wins a cup for Buffalo.

If he doesn't. Vegas gets the Dub.

Who won the Gretzky trade?
Whichever team won more cups because of it?

That's the winner.

You should tell espn. Their 30 for 30 took a different approach

The thing is, hockey is a team sport and from my observation, it usually the team with the most heart, not the most talent that wins. Thats why depth is a topic of discussion come playoff time.

Crosby and Toews are wonderful captains and leaders. I have seen zero leadership out of matthews, marner, and nylander. They are closer to Kessel than Toews and Crosby imo. Look at the work ethic of hyman compared to them, he isnt the most talented but he tries each shift and cares. I cant see toronto ever winning with this core because they just dont have the right work ethic regardless if skill sadly.

Toronto tried to get them some mentorship with Marleau but that didnt last. Dubas gave the kids the keys to the castle and then was surprised when they through a house party instead of studying.

Similar to Eichel, if I were Buffalo I'd be pretty happy with the ROR trade. We are looking at these deals from the Buffalo POV (trading away the star player). If we accept that the big 3 won't win a cup here (which feels conclusive at this point) then we can accept that no matter how well the players do on their new teams the Leafs can still be better off for it.

I think Mayfield will be a target if he makes it there for sure. Checks a lot of boxes. I also think Schenn will be resigned.
Actually think they will trade one of Timmins or Lilly(contract coming up after this year)

McCabe Mayfield
Rielly Schenn
Giordano Brodie
Timmins

Likely the d group

Brodie should be traded, as he is just. too physically weak, and has zero offense to compensate, and Gio should be a #7 if we want to actually contend

I wonder about the rumours of Gio retiring... I haven't seen anything substantiating that as of yet, and that could change things up.

I think him retiring wouldn't be all that helpful for that cap as he's over 35 but LTIRETIRE?

Yes.

I can’t see Gio retiring. I can see him slotting in as the 7th defenceman to start the year and getting in when injuries occur.

I can see him getting waived similar to Simmonds this year if needed for cap purposes and still practicing with the big club and it being staying in Toronto or retiring like Spezza.

My gut feeling is that the Leafs trade Nylander around the draft and re-sign Matthews

What Nylander goes for remains to be seen. We haven’t heard anything about the Leafs re-signing him when he’s eligible on July 1st.

Seems like the obvious fall guy from the core, love it or hate it.

Depending on how this season goes, they could move Tavares next offseason with retention and sun to re-sign Marner.

My bet is they’ll retool the core, long term, with Marner/Matthews.

I don’t know why the Isles would do that with Marner’s price tag and term left on his contact, plus they are tighter on the cap
If you’re the Islanders, you take that and run. We think Marner is overpaid at 10.9 million, Barzal at 9.1 million is even worse.

Aside from year 1, Barzal hasn't cracked more than 62 points in a season, hasn’t even hit the 20 goal mark in the past 5 seasons and isn’t nearly as good as Marner on the defensive end all while missing quite a bit of games due to injuries the last few seasons.

I get Barzal has speed and he’s a center but Marner is in an entire tier above Barzal.

I think that’s the route we take as well. Treliving usually has one star winger who doesn’t like getting their nose dirty and that’s Marner. In previous seasons that would have been Gaudreau and now Huberdeau.
