That is a lot of money and term to sink into Bertuzzi and Bunting. Bunting has not looked good away from our top 6 and has also sucked in the playoffs... So no different than Jarnkrok except Jarnkrok can at least be a decent PKer and only makes 2.1 mill. I'd rather put Robertson in Bunting's spot and use that 4.5 mill elsewhere... especially if it can net us a better 3C and bump everyone down a spot. I am not convinced that Holmberg is a full time center in the NHL (or should even be starting the year in the NHL even on the wing for that matter), and even if he was, that center group should be a lot better.

Lucic is really not any better than Simmonds, and not the player we need in our bottom 6. We need to get faster, and he just makes us slower, brings no special teams value anymore, and at 35, I doubt he really improves with a new start after being replacement level at best for the last 6 years.

I think a good start would be to find a 3C replacement for ROR and find a 4C replacement for Kampf. There are a number of solid 4C's out there this year (Eller, Nosek, Kampf, Blueger, etc.) so that will have us covered without needing to resort to Holmberg. Holmberg has exemption so sending him back down the Marlies to start the year may not be the worst idea... especially if we have sights on him being a center in the NHL rather than a winger. 3C is tougher. Domi and Compher are iffy especially if they are asking for 4+ mill with term on their next deals. Bergeron, Krejci, Toews, and Staal are likely not coming here. Rodrigues is not really a center. So really it is just ROR or Haula or throwing a Hail Mary at Monahan... Local kid with a Treliving connection if he is our GM, but has major injury concerns. If the Hail Mary connects though? That is a legit high end top 6 center.
I had Monahan penciled in as the 3C Center before spending the money on Bunting but his injury history is scary, we can't really afford our 3C to only be playing 30 games, I can see Bunting not even being a option coming back, it's a decent amount of investment in the both of them but I feel way more comfortable spending the money on Bert, he's put 60 points on a not so good Detroit team.

I'd love to be able to move JT to the wing and find a 2nd line center ideally, but like I said before, free agency is scary to try to get a 3C/4C, yet alone a 2C. ROR is probably the best centerman there, but at 32 and to get him, you'll probably have to give him 3x5m and he's already not the best skater.

Zero interest in brining Bunting back. Bertuzzi would be an excellent fit in the top-6.

Compher would be a great add, even at 4+.

What type of contract will Monahan be able to get?

I agree that it's a very risky move but with tremendous upside.

Look at it this way though... The guy will probably take anything he can get on a one year deal. It won't be league minimum, but I can't see it being more than 2.5-3 mill either.

Let's say we sign Monahan, Acciari, and Nosek/Eller for the 4th line. Healthy lineup would be something like this:

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Monahan - UFA
Lafferty - Nosek/Eller - Acciari
McMann + Holmberg/Steeves/Abruzzese/etc. on the Marlies.

Worst case is that Monahan and Robertson both get injured. Acciari probably moves to center, Holmberg takes his spot on the 4th line with Lafferty and Nosek/Eller, and then Robertson is replaced by Steeves, Abruzzese, or McMann. Pretty much what you had originally anyways except no Bunting (we could afford to still bring Bertuzzi if we wanted). Unless we dump Muzzin, we are probably in LTIR all year next year anyways so cap-wise that doesn't matter. The only thing would be opportunity cost lost, and TBH, I would rather take a chance on Monahan at 2.5-3 mill vs what you would get otherwise... Which is going to be what? If we give term, we may get Haula at that but I imagine he is going to have a lot better options given the weak market. Rodrigues is the same. The rest are either 4C's like Nosek/Eller, over the hill veterans who should probably retire at this point, and Nick Bjugstad, who is hardly a more attractive option than just using one of our prospects.

The wing is not looking much better either. Miles Wood and Jonathan Drouin is hardly any less injury prone than Monahan, and they are by far the best options in that money range on the wings too. The rest are like Namestnikov-quality, or should be getting fairly nice deals with term and a good amount of cap dollars and I am not sure we should be giving either to anyone who is not earmarked for our top 6... Especially if we are planning on getting a bigger fish to fill that one UFA spot as it is.

Monahan is a huge swing, but if he hits, he is the steal of a fairly weak UFA crop for what could use to put us over the top and he is someone who could put us over the top. The rest are likely very expensive in both term and dollars, and in this market, I would rather place my bets on defense than up front.

I wouldn’t be completely upset with Monahan but I think there’s better options out there. Rasmussen from Detroit is my top pick followed by Laughton from Philly. Haula is another solid choice.

I said it yesterday, but Haula is one UFA i’d snap up quick. Take care of that 3C spot, and we know he’s not commanding O’Rielly money. He’s much more of what we’re looking for, anyways. Fast, tenacious, erc.

I guess a small list of targets I’d like to see are as follows:
- Erik Haula
- Connor Brown
- Ivan Barbashev
- Miles Wood
- Damon Severson
- Ryan Graves
- Luke Schenn
- Carson Soucie
- Scott Mayfield

I don’t see much appeal in Monahan myself
Agreed. Slow as molasses centre depth. Even at his best, before he failed to play a healthy season for 6+ years straight, he was as boring as a player gets and sucked defensively. Plays without a pulse. If he's asking for pennies then sure.

Fix the forecheck and team speed first and foremost. Our wingers cannot be this small and soft. Marner, Nylander, Jarnkrok, Robertson is going to basically ensure that there's no combinations of players that create a heavy middle/top six line.

I would be very disappointed if that's what we do in the offseason. That forward group is significantly worse than what we just lost with.

I think if we just run with the idea of a 4th line being laffterty/holmberg/acciari with a mcmann rotation we can be done with it and move on to more actually important issues.

3C
Dman or 2

Just focusing on the forwards for now,

To Toronto: Elias Lindholm + 2nd Rounder
To Calgary: William Nylander

To Toronto: Scott Laughton
To Philadelphia: 1st Rounder

UFA Signing: Tyler Bertuzzi

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Jarnkrok
Knies - Lindholm - Marner
Tavares - Laughton - Robertson
McMann - Holmberg - Acciari

Why would Calgary ever do that? I don't think Calgary does Nylander for Lindholm 1 for 1.

Why trade Nylander not Marner? Marner is the easy trade for me

yeah I think I agree with this. It's definitely a lot harder than it looks finding fast heavier players that can play higher in the lineup and contribute in a good way. I think about Niederreter as a player that fits that mold. But I think that should be a priority this off-season.

Why would Calgary ever do that? I don't think Calgary does Nylander for Lindholm 1 for 1.
Because Nylander is the far superior offensive player. Maybe Lindholm won’t re-sign in Calgary? Maybe Nylander is willing to re-sign in Calgary given that’s where he was born? Both teams are looking to make a change within the core.

Was trying to keep it somewhat realistic. If it were up to me Nylander, Marner and ideally Tavares would be wearing different jerseys next season. The only guy I’m keeping is Matthews and that also depends on what his asking price is on an extension. If he’s looking for 14/15 million, I’d show him the door as well.

What makes Nylander for superior offensively to Lindholm? Why are we ignoring defense/position and contract which make Lindholm the better and more valuable player?

If it were up to you, we’d be in a rebuild? Because that’s not even a re-tool. You move those players out, Matthews walks.

What do you think Bostons asks in return for those two?
I would expect it to be low. I'd reluctantly trade them their 1st+Jarnkrok for them. Looking at their cap position they would theoretically be motivated to move on from both of them so I think they could be had for less.

Edit: I wouldn't give up the Boston 1st. I'd offer Lafferty+Jarnkrok for them. Give them 2 serviceable roster players that save them cap space.

Marner for Lindholm +

should be the deal if we're trading any of our forwards for lindholm. we could probably sign him for 3-4m less than what Marner is going to want on his next deal. Also allows you to move Tavares to wing.

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Tavares-Lindholm-FA/Trade

If an injury happens, Tavares can step into a C role as well.
