In comparison, Nylander currently earns more, has been superior offensively and is a bit younger. Barring vastly different term lengths, I'll be fairly surprised if Lindholm's new contract (AAV) ends up being equivalent to Nylander's upcoming deal.
I don't disagree that Nylander will make more, I disagree that he should make more. It's not like they're that far apart in age.

Mentioned this in the draft thread - but imo a new GM will be more inclined to trade prospects than picks to get things done. Knies likely still untouchable - but they'll have no initial attachment to anyone else in the Leafs prospect system.

Could potentially see some moved out for that 3C for example

I'd say Minten is unlikely to move just because our prospect pool is almost barren for centres.

I think Knies and Amirov are practically untouchable. It would take a lot for us to move Niemela and Robertson with Villeneuve and Minten not far behind (I still don't see Minten as a center in the NHL but he is the closest thing we've got right now).

The rest, which are mostly wingers anyways, are expendable with Voit, Hirvonen, Abruzzese, Holmberg, and Steeves leading the pack. We have a ton of good winger prospects so we can really afford to leverage that to get stuff done.

I wouldn't mind retaining Holmberg since he should be NHL ready on a full-time basis while not exactly possessing a ton of trade value as the main component of any deal.

He seems like he is developing into that mid to long term cheap efdective depth player.. like a 5 to 7 yr 2million or less guy barring one of those stupid offensive outliers

I'm fine with him starting on the fourth line before hopefully working his way up to the third line. I think his trade value is likely to be bottom six forward or bottom pairing defenceman and don't love the idea of subtracting him in order to add either of those since I do believe he can be effective and economical for the team.

Operating under the assumption Shanahan told the Core4 that they are all coming back.

Bertuzzi (5 x 5.25m) - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Bunting (4x 4.5m) - Acciari (2 x 1.75m) - Jarnkrok
Lafferty - Holmberg - Lucic (1 x 1.250m)
Robertson.

Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Lilly
Gio - Schenn (2 x 1.5m)
Timmins

Samsovov (1 x 3.5m) <Assuming they take him to arbitration to get a lower cap hit.
Woll.

Money left over; 806k.

NOTES:
- Filling the 3rd and 4th line center postion is hard to do in FA, not that many good options, Holmberg could be a risky option for 4c, but thought he played well while he was up here for the 35 games or so. Also don't know if the 3rd line center of Acciari is good enough, but see what I said eariler.

- Tried to take in consideration someone like Treliving would bring over from Calgary player wise, pretty sure Lucic is better then Simmonds and brings that "heavy" element to our bottom 6, could easily just put someone like Robertson there instead.

- Not sure on UFA market and what they are actually going to get, might be tad to low for someone like Bunting and Bertuzzi, (think filling that top 6 hole with Bertuzzi or someone else is important instead of having a revolving door around them.

That is a lot of money and term to sink into Bertuzzi and Bunting. Bunting has not looked good away from our top 6 and has also sucked in the playoffs... So no different than Jarnkrok except Jarnkrok can at least be a decent PKer and only makes 2.1 mill. I'd rather put Robertson in Bunting's spot and use that 4.5 mill elsewhere... especially if it can net us a better 3C and bump everyone down a spot. I am not convinced that Holmberg is a full time center in the NHL (or should even be starting the year in the NHL even on the wing for that matter), and even if he was, that center group should be a lot better.

Lucic is really not any better than Simmonds, and not the player we need in our bottom 6. We need to get faster, and he just makes us slower, brings no special teams value anymore, and at 35, I doubt he really improves with a new start after being replacement level at best for the last 6 years.

I think a good start would be to find a 3C replacement for ROR and find a 4C replacement for Kampf. There are a number of solid 4C's out there this year (Eller, Nosek, Kampf, Blueger, etc.) so that will have us covered without needing to resort to Holmberg. Holmberg has exemption so sending him back down the Marlies to start the year may not be the worst idea... especially if we have sights on him being a center in the NHL rather than a winger. 3C is tougher. Domi and Compher are iffy especially if they are asking for 4+ mill with term on their next deals. Bergeron, Krejci, Toews, and Staal are likely not coming here. Rodrigues is not really a center. So really it is just ROR or Haula or throwing a Hail Mary at Monahan... Local kid with a Treliving connection if he is our GM, but has major injury concerns. If the Hail Mary connects though? That is a legit high end top 6 center.

They probably need to sign one top 6 LW, Knies gets the other top 6 LW spot.
I am leaning towards taking my chances with Robertson on the 3rd line. Signing two left wingers could be overkill and ties up a lot of cap unnecessarily going forward.

Still have to find a 3C, but having Robertson and Jarnkok on the wings could be a decent 3rd line.

Forgot Severson was a FA. Devils have quite a bit of cap but a majority of it is gonna go to Bratt and Meier if they decide to bring him back. Mercer will need a new deal after next season so they'll need some cap for that but I feel like they'll get a deal done with Severson. Tatar could be a nice option if he's cheap enough and not looking for like 3+ year deal.
