5’7 140 pounds.

Phillips has the body of someone in elementary school. Not what we need, unless it’s for some scoring on the Marlies.

Plays with a lot of speed and is really good with the puck. He's pretty feisty from memory as well. He'd be likely a Marlies target, just like the rest of the names there, but sometimes small players can break out in the right environment. Depth is good.

Thinking about McLeod out in Edmonton, a young centreman who's speedy, good defensively, and has some upside and could be a Tavares successor as our 2C. If the Leafs are looking to get younger and faster he should be a target. I wonder if we could parlay Brodie and maybe a pick for his rights, Edmonton is always looking for defensemen and they seemed to have really soured on Ceci.

Interesting how he's turned out. I remember just before the '18 draft Mirtle posted an article saying the Leafs wouldn't have interest in him due him a late birthday.

I think they would want more or at least a younger piece going back as well as Brodie.

Why? Merzlikens. Peterson Campbell all got 5.

He has a career high of just 44 games played, and is an RFA without a particularly strong arbitration case and also a low qualifying offer.

If the term is just 1-2 years it'll come with a low aav. If it's a longer term deal he may get a higher number.

But a short term bridge deal seems ideal for both sides

2M of dead cap space is certainly not easy for a team looking to remain in contention.

Every option should be exhausted before they buy him out. Hell even waiving him and putting him on the Marlies would be better in the short-term. Mirtle seemed to think there is a market for him.
Ideal? No. But I’m not sure there is an ideal option.

Its really pick your poison in my opinion. What is worth more? Approx of 4M of gained cap space when the cap is only going up by approx. 1M and then losing 2M when the cap is going up more?

Or an asset to dump the contract? Not sure he will be easy to dump as it is 8M cash in regular salary.

Robidas island is obviously ideal.

I don’t think its great logic, but his 2M cap hit for the final year can be used to budget a raise for Woll assuming all goes well too.

Some cheap targets to look at.

Lucas Carlsson would be at the top of my list. If Treliving is hired, Phillips could be someone he gives a shot to. Daccord would great as a 3rd stringer but seems likely he gets a shot somewhere.

Drew O'Connor would be perfect. Then sign Archibald and you have a legitimate 4th line in DOC-Lafferty-Archibald.

They can survive a 2M hit next year. Especially if one of Matthews/Nylander are dealt. I think their best path forward (depending on cost to dump) is moving Samsonov and keeping Murray.

The more I think about it, the more the leafs should remake their core by trading Matthew, Marner, Nylander for players like Elias Lindolm, Noah Hanifin, Seth Jarvis, Jamie Drydale , Ana 2nd overall or Mason McTavish, etc.

We'll properly won't make the playoff or just be a wildcard team, but with next year free agent will have players like Sebastian Aho, Jake Guentzel, and Ilya Sorokin. We'll have the cap space to sign one or two if we manage our cap space for efficiently this time.

Though that gets trickier if they don't intend on making a trade with one of those core guys
Well if they don't then cap space doesn't matter anyway because they aren't going to win.

Depending on what they do - I proposed trading Murray back to Dubas in exchange for Petry yesterday. Seems to be a positive move for both teams. Pens might be losing Jarry, Dubas seems to value Murray, they could stand to shed money on the back end - especially if they want to bring back Dumo. Leafs take on 1.5M extra salary and an additional year but get an aging player who is still useful.

If my outsider view of Petry's value is off then add on one of Dubas' guys like Hirvonen/Villeneuve/SDA.

Marlies have enough wingers... Especially undersized ones. If we add someone, it needs to be a center with the potential to fill in at the NHL level. Especially if we expect Holmberg is making the NHL full time next year and can't fill that role himself.

Aren't all three contracts entirely comprised of UFA years though? I'm guessing that management probably won't look to go beyond two years on a new contract for Samsonov (1 UFA year).

Murray had a falling out with coaches in Pittsburgh. Even if Dubas likes him, I doubt he'll go against the coaching staff and bring in Murray.

Simplest Murray transaction is to buy his ass out.

I was just playing around. Marner isn't getting moved.

Put my leaf cap back on

I hope it is explored.. i really think you gotta see whats out there for him

Maybe but the construction of the supporting cast may need to change instead.

Dubas' plan has been top offensive lines and 2 defensive lines which are offensive black holes. They finally have some flexibility to create a real 3rd line.

Also, on Marner, he's Toronto's leading point scorer in the playoffs. No where close his regular season production but still impressive and as Cam Charron (former leafs staff) pointed out, he absolutely dominated Tampa in the last 2 seasons.

Wonder if Murray would go the LTIR for the season and take the year to focus on getting healthier .. and then signing somewhere as a UFA next year cheap. Guy isn’t even 30 yet.

Murray was healthy at the end of the Panthers series. Zero chance he gives up on his career and spends the season on LTIR.

He's not?

Shanahan called them all and told them they will not be moved.

It may be the simplest transaction but it is also the worst for the Leafs short of paying a stupid amount to dump him.

And it would not be significantly more complicated to make a move that makes a lot more sense for the Leafs.

We'll see if the new GM can do that.

Is this a joke?
No it's not a joke, most likely unrealistic, but is it possible, time we'll tell. But all those players listed won't make more than Matthew, Marner, or Nylander. If we do trade for Lindolm, Hanifin, Jarvis, I expect them to sign a contract extension right away.

Lindolm: $7-8M
Hanifin:$6-7M
Jarvis:$3.5-4M

If this free agency we don't sign anyone big, we could have in the 23-24 off season $31M in cap space. So we could sign one of Sebastian Aho, Jake Guentzel, Ilya Sorokin, or someone else.
