If we don’t trade a core 4, trading out Brodie to someone like LAK/CGY for a 2nd and a 3rd to restock picks a bit. Replace with ideally Orlov (~6.5m), but Graves, Mayfield, Soucy would be nice options.

Rielly - Schenn
Orlov - Liljegren
McCabe/Timmins/Gio

Get RoR (~5m) and Acciari (~2m) resigned, get some decent depth in guys like Wood and Donato (~2-3m).
Give the core 4 the rookies Knies and Robertson and have a very solid bottom 6.

Knies/Robertson - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson/Knies - Tavares - Marner
Donato/Wood - RoR - Acciari
Wood/Donato - Holmberg - Jarnkrok
Lafferty
That wastes lafferty and his contract and in the bean counting world the asset management of the mccabe lafferty deal

Donato no.. not at that cost. Wood should not get paid more than 1.25 imo.. use that money for upgrading if possible

I would rather have mcmann personally rotate than spend 3 million on 4th liners

Focusing on our center depth will be another big challenge for our new GM. If ROR doesn’t re-sign (which it’s looking more and more likely) and Tavares moves to the wing (ideally), it creates a big problem down the middle.

Two guys I’ve mentioned for quite some time I’d love to get are Rasmussen (third line center) and McLeod (fourth line center).

To Toronto: Michael Rasmussen + 3rd Rounder
To Detroit: TJ Brodie + Nick Robertson

To Toronto: Michael McLeod
To New Jersey: Conor Timmins

Sign Carson Soucy through free agency to replace TJ Brodie.

I was thinking that too.

He fell off hard this year.

Mobility wasn't as good and offense died on his stick way too much, he looked AFRAID to shoot when he'd get a clean pass at the blue line and the lanes hadn't clogged up.
I think so too. Trading TJ and sign Orlov as UFA would be amazing

But he can move the puck and chip in on offense.
From what I seen, he is not a liability on defense, which is good enough.

If you're looking for offensive d-men then there are less expensive options that might not require removing the team's best defensive d-man. E.g. Klingberg.

Why would the Leafs want Orlov? The guys is about to get a 4-6 year deal and he'll be 32 when he starts it. TJ Brodie aged in front of our eyes this season and he's 32. Orlov is the last player the Leafs need. Wait one year and chase Hanifin or Toews.
Alright fine, don't like Orlov then I'm sure there's plenty of other people who can fill that role on the left side to make it so Gio isn't playing every game. Maybe they like Gustafsson and what he brings to the offensive side and 2nd PP unit. Maybe they like a Soucy more for that bottom pair role who can play PK and role McCabe-Tanev PK1 and Soucy-Schenn PK2. Or maybe someone like Kral earns a spot finally. Maybe Niemela impresses so much he stays on the Leafs then keeping Brodie is probably the best thing to do to have Brodie with Lili and McCabe with Niemela.

This is the type of defenseman we need coming back in the Marner trade.

Tbh if we traded Marner I would hope we could get a good C option behind Matthews. This way if Matthews got hurt then that player could step in on the 1st and Tavares could just fill in at 2C. I've seen mock trades with him to Seattle and Wright being one of the pieces coming back with others of course and I know Seattle would be open to it because they could use a winger like Marner with Beniers. I can't remember if I saw this on here or on twitter or maybe just a friend making up trades on the fly for Glass and Fabbro. That wouldn't be too bad but the question is would Nashville do that and why.

Marner + small piece for E. Lindholm + Andersson | Hanifin

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Tavares - Lindholm - _______

Hanifin - Brodie
Rielly - Schenn
McCabe - Liljegren

I mean we need a top pair RD and a 2C. I doubt we get both in a Nylander/Marner trade. Need to get one in UFA.

That's worse than the Tkachuk trade, IMO.

Tavares might be a lot of things but the guy still had a PPG this year and he's competent on draws and works hard at both ends of the ice. I know people are frustrated with him but to say we need a 2c with Matthews and Tavares (for now) is stretching the needs of this team quite a bit. We definitely need to replace Kampf though and Holmberg should be up full time. There aren't many very good centers to sign in free agency. Toews, ROR, Staal, Haula, Rodrigues, Nosek... it's bleak. I think Dubas did well finding cost efficient players to fill the gaps, so the new guy hopefully can do just as good.

Defensively is a little harder to know what's going to happen but I think a small shuffle might be good and I do think there are some good defenders to target in free agency right now.

But for now, here is a look at what the future might hold for Toronto’s Big Four and how it relates to the Red Wings:

Auston Matthews: It’s a pipe dream to think the Red Wings could acquire the 2022 Hart Trophy winner through a trade. Their best bet would be to overpay him as a free agent if he hits the market in 13 months.

The Leafs will do everything they can to lock up their franchise player who turns 26 in September and is entering the final year of his deal at an $11.6 million cap hit. He reportedly is not happy that Dubas, whom he was close to, was let go. The Leafs can’t afford to let Matthews walk for nothing and might move him by July 1, when his full no-trade clause takes effect, if it appears a deal can’t be had.

Toronto surely would ask for Moritz Seider as a starting point in any talks with the Red Wings. Detroit probably would be willing to package a number of players, prospects and picks that doesn’t include Seider to get Matthews, provided they can lock him up to an extension. But why would he sign an extension with the Red Wings when free agency is near?

Mitch Marner
: If the Leafs extend Matthews, would they be willing to do likewise with Marner, 26, at a slightly lower number by the time his deal ($10.9 million average annual value) expires after 2024-25? He’s tallied 94 or more points in each of his past three full seasons. No Red Wing has had that many since Pavel Datsyuk’s 97-point seasons in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

John Tavares: The Leafs captain turns 33 in September and is still productive (36 goals, 80 points this season), but he has two years remaining at an $11 million AAV and would not interest a rebuilding team like the Red Wings. If Tavares doesn’t finish his career in his hometown Toronto, he’d likely join a Stanley Cup contender seeking that final piece.

William Nylander
: This is the most sensible acquisition for the Red Wings. He’s 27 and coming off a career year (40 goals, 87 points) and is entering the final year of his deal at $6.9 million. If the Leafs hang onto the other three, they might not have the money or the appetite to re-sign Nylander for upwards of $10 million a season. They could look to move him by the draft (June 28-29). The Leafs have Boston’s first-round pick this year (No. 28) but not their own and none in the second, third or fourth rounds. The Red Wings aren’t likely to move their first pick (No. 9) but surely would be willing to part with the 17th (from the New York Islanders via Vancouver) and one or two of their second-rounders. Whatever it would cost, the Red Wings would need to sign him to an extension at the time of the deal.

Domi had a good year. What is this guy going to ask for contract wise?
