This is obviously hindsight... but do we think bringing in guys like Marleau and/or Thornton over guys like Perry, Williams etc had a bigger issue on our young guys than we thought?

I get the Lawson Crouse, Anderson desires... but what you want is a situation where the player isn't a big name yet, but might be that player next. Or someone who has shown the capability to be that player, but fell off.

An up and coming guy, is Jack McBain. Very physical, and started to show some offense last year... much like he did at BC. He's rounding out defensively, and is a C too.

Comtois will likely be a UFA this year... he's a bigger body, and has shown offensive ability in the past. A change of scenery could bring that back.

We as Leaf fans always want the big shiny names... and I get that, but we want the Bunting... identifying the cost controlled guy, who is likely to break out next. Especially if we are committed to keeping the big 4 and their salaries.

What about Yakov Trenin?

26 years old
6'2, 200 lbs
Top 20 amongst forwards in hits for players that played 1000+ minutes
Positive shooting talent above average
Shooting talent adjusted expected goals of 18.5
1 year remaining on contract at 1.7 million

Not very familiar with his game but have heard people bring up his name before.

Is he a C or LW/RW?

Arizona will ask for a 1st round pick easily! They gave up a 2nd, high one to Minnesota for his rights and they aren't just trading him after his 2nd season in nhl

If Treliving is hired, I can see him having interest in Mayfield through free agency. He definitely likes having a mix of size, skill and physicality from the backend.

Rielly - Mayfield
McCabe - Liljegren
Brodie - Timmins
#7 - Giordano

Very good pov. Hard guys to find, but there’s a couple guys a year it seems who fit that profile.

I liked the idea of McBain; ARI paid a good price on him though, so I wonder if they’d move on from him just yet.
With how le looked in the back half i dont think they would move him unless to pay tampas prices

I think Mayfield will be a target if he makes it there for sure. Checks a lot of boxes. I also think Schenn will be resigned.

If you're looking to optimize the roster, I think finding a partner for Rielly is a good way to start. And that partner has to be a defensive, stay at home kinda guy. The reason he worked so well with Schenn, is he knew that he had the ability to move around throughout the ice to know that someone is going to be there.

Need to dump Murray. Maybe Dubas wants his starting goalie and Letang replacement.

Murray
Timmins

For

Rutta

Rutta is a solid bottom pairing rock, similar to Schenn. He can play both sides as well. I want Mayfield like everyone else but I think he’ll get overpaid. Good alternative and we get out of Murray’s contract.

I think Brodie might be the one that leaves before Timmins. We'll see.

I was thinking that too.

He fell off hard this year.

Mobility wasn't as good and offense died on his stick way too much, he looked AFRAID to shoot when he'd get a clean pass at the blue line and the lanes hadn't clogged up.

It's not really about his playoff performance. He still was probably our most consistent defensive defenseman in the regular season. He's been really good and he'll likely be really good but I do think his overall game is regressing for sure. I just think it would be a good time to sell high and I think the Leafs would have zero problems trading him for a very good return.

He would be one to move if the team really wants to maximize their ability to retool the support forwards + remake the D this offseason. Especially if they opt to extend Schenn.

And if they manage to dump Murray would give the new GM almost 30 mil to play with

Yep pretty much. It opens up just a different wave of players to take a spot and gives even more cap space to perhaps retool further.

I think Rielly, Liljegren and McCabe are a good nucleus going into the next season. Timmins is a good secondary depth player right now signed to a cheap deal and Gio is a fine veteran that probably should be downgraded to a minimal role.

I do really like him as a player - has arguably been the teams best D man for much of his time here, but he definitely has value still and it could potentially help avoid a Muzzin type situation in future

Schenn worked quite well with Rielly... and that's not something easy to find... It seems logical to me, to extend Schenn... and he'd be cheaper than Mayfield too.

He wouldn't be cheap, as others have said here.

When I threw together a roster in Capfriendly, the trade was Boston 1st, Brodie, Murray for McBain and Arizona 2nd.

If we don’t trade a core 4, trading out Brodie to someone like LAK/CGY for a 2nd and a 3rd to restock picks a bit. Replace with ideally Orlov (~6.5m), but Graves, Mayfield, Soucy would be nice options.

Rielly - Schenn
Orlov - Liljegren
McCabe/Timmins/Gio

Get RoR (~5m) and Acciari (~2m) resigned, get some decent depth in guys like Wood and Donato (~2-3m).
Give the core 4 the rookies Knies and Robertson and have a very solid bottom 6.

Knies/Robertson - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson/Knies - Tavares - Marner
Donato/Wood - RoR - Acciari
Wood/Donato - Holmberg - Jarnkrok
Lafferty

Under a new coach I’d be ok with the following:

Rielly-Schenn
Brodie-Liljegren
McCabe-Rutta
/Giordano

Timmins + Murray for Rutta

Let Liljegren run wild on the offensive side. Eventually Niemela could slot in for some extra offence, whether that’s next season or a couple away. Let him develop.

Rielly-Schenn works.
Brodie will cover for Lilly defensively and he could focus more on the offensive side.
Solid mean bottom pairing with Rutta covering for McCabe when he decides to lay the hits.
