If it is Treliving, and I hope it isn't, I wonder who he targets from Calgary. I'd want him to bring over:

1. Walker Duehr
2. Andrew Mangiapane
3. Chris Tanev (assuming he could be had relatively cheap)

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised to see a Brodie for Tanev swap if that's the case. Flames pretty stacked with right shot D and could use a top 4 left shot D. Both only got 1 year left on their deals and Tanev makes 500k less than Brodie. Maybe it puts us in the Orlov sweepstakes on FA day.

Rielly-Schenn
Orlov-Tanev
McCabe-Liljegren
Gio-Timmins

Doesn't look too bad.

Why would the Leafs want Orlov? The guys is about to get a 4-6 year deal and he'll be 32 when he starts it. TJ Brodie aged in front of our eyes this season and he's 32. Orlov is the last player the Leafs need. Wait one year and chase Hanifin or Toews.

Calling BS on this one.
I mean it makes sense.

Dubas hinted that he would move anyone during his presser.

Dubas left so Shanahan probably reassured everyone that they’ll stay so they can discuss a contract.

Whether they stay or not is to be seen, and depends on their contract demands.

x/Knies - Matthews - Marner
x/Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Jarnkrok - x - x
Lafferty - Holmberg - x

3 bottom 6 spots and 1 top 6 spot to be filled.

Assuming Murray is bought out/traded and Samsonov/Holmberg make a combined $4.5M, that leaves approximately $15M in cap space to work with.

But you cannot commit term to anyone you sign because you have no f***ing idea what Matthews next contract will look like.

The course here may be to pick up expiring deals that teams may want to dump.

E.g. Brock Boeser, Blake Wheeler (with retention), Anthony Mantha, Victor Olofsson, Victor Arvidsson.
I’ve got a sneaky feeling about Brock Boeser for some reason.

I wonder if he'd work well with Holmberg. Holmberg is quite effective playing C, but so far, not so good at Faceoffs. Nylander can play C as well, which might be something worth trying.

I don't know if they'll bring RoR back or not. I'd rather have him at ~$5 mil, than Bunting.

Holmberg/RoR/Nylander/Tavares would give us some options down the middle.
I think Homberg is a lock for next year.
He’s too smart and too ready to be in the A again.
If all four big guns are back, I’d be very interested in a Swede line: CJ-PH-WN
Some speed, some forecheck, sone defensive acumen, and just let Willy drive the offense.

Trade marner + lilly to columbus for jenner and werenski.

Knies. Matthews. Nylander
Tavares. Ror. Xxxxx
Robertson. Jenner. Jarnkrok
Lafferty. Holmberg. Acciari
Xxxx. Xxxx

Rielly. Werenski
Mccabe. Brodie
Gio. Schenn
Xxxx. Xxxx

Samsonov
Woll
I personally don’t wanna see Lili moved at all, but I do like those two players.

If Shanahan is dead set on running back the core 4 here is what I would do (today)

2023 28OA, Robertson, Muzzin for Schmaltz
Jarnkrok for Colton
Timmins+Samsonov for Forsberg+Kastelic
Lafferty for Foegele
Brodie for Perron
McMann for Duehr
Murray for Petry

Sign Rodrigues

I’d run:
Colton-Matthews-Nylander
Tavares-Schmaltz-Marner
Knies-Rodrigues-Perron
Foegele-Kastelic-Duehr

Rielly-Schenn
McCabe-Petry
Gio-Liljegren

Forsberg
Woll

I personally wouldn’t bring back all of the big 4 though.

My interest would be very low because his contract is pretty terrible but if the price to acquire is very low and the Leafs find some cap space, then maybe there's something to work out.

He's the exact player that the Leafs need. I know there's often times that people look at the contract and it has to be some element of it. But, you're getting a player that the Leafs don't have. Can play in the top 6 and can actually be physical.

I think he could score 25 playing in this line-up.

Any thoughts on bringing Josh Anderson in?

Honestly the way he plays is perfect for the playoffs.

Would absolutely love him with the Leafs. I think he's the player or type of players leafs are really missing
His contract is astrocious though

Lawson Crouse is another player. But that shipped has sailed. He turned his career around. He was available early last year
We are going to need players that can score and hit

I wouldn’t mind it if we can send them back Matt Murray and either he comes cheap in terms of assets or with salary retained.

That contract is kind of awful and there’s still 4 more years of it.

I get the Lawson Crouse, Anderson desires... but what you want is a situation where the player isn't a big name yet, but might be that player next. Or someone who has shown the capability to be that player, but fell off.

An up and coming guy, is Jack McBain. Very physical, and started to show some offense last year... much like he did at BC. He's rounding out defensively, and is a C too.

Comtois will likely be a UFA this year... he's a bigger body, and has shown offensive ability in the past. A change of scenery could bring that back.

We as Leaf fans always want the big shiny names... and I get that, but we want the Bunting... identifying the cost controlled guy, who is likely to break out next. Especially if we are committed to keeping the big 4 and their salaries.

That there is a lot of moving parts, but I like some of the ideas.
Schmaltz I’ve brought up before. The contract is pretty okay if he’s healthy, but a bit icky given his injury history. Maybe with a bit of retention to balance that factor out?
I think an offensive RHC is a smart way to transition JT to the wing as you’ve suggested, and maximize his current talents. I’m one of the few who doesn’t think he was a disaster of a signing.
And I really like the idea of promoting McMann given his development internally, all the way up. I think it’s the right message.

Very good pov. Hard guys to find, but there’s a couple guys a year it seems who fit that profile.

I liked the idea of McBain; ARI paid a good price on him though, so I wonder if they’d move on from him just yet.

He's injured a lot and making 5.5M for the next 3 years. He might add an element the Leafs need but he hasn't scored more than 32 points since 2018-2019, the only time he ever got more than 40 points. He had 6 points in 22 games with MTL in their big cup run a few years back.

There are many ways of adding his element without taking on that contract. I get the allure but he's just not that good.
