Blackhawks aren't there in their rebuild where they would make that trade, they're years away.

I've floated Anaheim in here because I think they're either at the point of making a big move or at worst a year out.

Matthews CAN'T sign an extension before July 1st according to the rules of the NHL. The Leafs also "can't" negotiate a contract with him before July 1st, but that's a rule that has a lot of loopholes.

Basically, the Leafs and Matthews need to (unofficially) negotiate a contract before July 1st and then do a handshake promise with each other that both parties are gonna sign it on July 1st, since Matthews will have his No Movement Clause starting on the same day.

Contract is negotiated and agreed on before July 1st and only thing needed is for team and player to sign it when they're allowed to on July 1st = keep Matthews and sign the contract extension

Contract isn't agreed on by both parties with only 24 or 48 or 72 hours left before July 1st = trade him

I'm going to need a source on this one. There's nothing in the CBA section regarding extensions about it. I feel like people are taking the "Can't talk to free agents until July 1st" thing from normal UFAs because they're property of another team and extending it to your own players because of the 1 year extension period.

(i) An "extension" of an SPC, as such term is used in this Agreement, shall mean a new SPC entered into between a Club and a Player, which SPC is to be effective immediately upon the expiration of the Club and Player's existing SPC. To the extent a Club and Player enter into a valid contract extension during the final year of the Player's SPC, the contract extension will be fully enforceable pursuant to its terms even in the event the Player is injured prior to the commencement date of the contract extension.

The rest of that section is all about the cap ramifications. Yes you can't sign the thing until July 1st. However the player is under contract with you. You can absolutely discuss an extension with him

They can discuss, they cannot put pen to paper with RFA eligible for an extension.

I think in the last 1-2 years, I think one team even tweeted they had agreement in place on an extension in place but needed to wait until the day came to make it official.

Pretty bold but that's the kinda thing I would want in place with Matthews heading into draft weekend. Make your best offer and see you can get it over the finish line.

Free agency is supposed to start at 12 noon on july 1st. At 1201 toronto announces the signing of john smith to a 7 year 56 million dollar contract with 14 million paid up front with a last year no movement clause. Do people actually believe all this was discussed and agreed to in a minute.

Probably the only three worth signing unless ROR comes at a reasonable number (and even that is mostly because there is not much better out there).

And even Kampf is probably expendable with the number of 4C alternatives available in UFA this year. If he wants 2+ mill on a long term deal, even he is probably not worth it to us.

The problem is Tavares

Marner has the creativity, O’Rielly has the grit and leadership, Matthews is better at scoring goals and Nylander is the best value contract. Tavares is a luxury not a need.

The reality is we could have kept Hyman who had more points for 1/2 the cost of Tavares. Basically you could have Hyman and another top 6 player for the cost of Tavares.

We’re all trying to figure out how to fix the roster and trading away a 100 point player like Marner or an amazing value contract like Nylander to keep Tavares is not the answer and pretty absurd when you think about it.

With Dubas out and no loyalty attached to JT, I’d like to see the new GM come in and make some bold moves like ask this guy who waive his NMC and maybe, just maybe O’Reilly is the next captain.

Tavares has the brand of a great guy or nice guy. So nobody wants to make a thread about it. Seems like a top class individual and family man. I have a lot of respect for him… I respect all these athletes, but the leafs don’t need a good family man. We need some physcopaths that care about running through brick walls, mucking it up or providing the elite high end skill at a good cap hit. Sometimes you have to do anything to win. I don’t see it with this guy.
