A very interesting trade target would be Ross Colton. Tampa will be in a cap crunch so he might become expendable. If the Leafs can parlay a future that they get from dealing Marner/Nylander/Matthews into Colton after a down year that would be decent business. I also wonder if Tampa would be interested in flipping Colton for Jarnkrok if Colton's contract demands are >3M.

EvolvingHockey dropped their contract projections for next season. Their projection have been the most accurate projections available since they started publishing them.

Notable leafs:
ROR: 5.5Mx3
Bunting: 5.4Mx4
Samsonov: 5.2Mx4
Kerfoot: 3.7Mx4
Holl: 3.5Mx3
Kampf: 2.2Mx3
Acciari: 2.1Mx3
Schenn: 1.6Mx2

Notable UFAs (to me):
Bertuzzi: 5.5Mx4
Rodrigues: 4.8Mx4
Soucy: 2.6Mx3
Brown: 2Mx1
Blueger: 1.6Mx1

Keep in mind EvolvingHockey LOVED Bunting in his rookie year. Like he was top 5 in the league in one of their WAR models. I think they're overestimating him here too but we'll see.

The key thing people are missing in all these Marner trade proposals is that the team will have to have the cap space to absorb an 11 million dollar cap hit

Looking through comparable trades the last 10 years I think the best framework comparable for Marner is Duchene. That was a 3 way trade where the team who acquired Duchene didn't have enough assets that Colorado was interested in. I could see a 3 way deal between TOR-OTT-LAK where LAK get Debrincat (they can't afford Marner, they can extend Debrincat for 8 years and cheaper), OTT get Marner, TOR get Pinto, Vilardi, Clarke. Ottawa gives up Debrincat (who they are sour on) and Pinto for Marner, LAK give up Vilardi, Clarke for Debrincat who they extend similar to Fiala.

I agree. I think the deal makes more sense for LAK if it's someone like Iafallo instead of Clarke - just to clear space for them while also giving Toronto a useful player. So:

To Ott:
Marner

To TOR:
Iafallo
Pinto
Vilardi

To LAK:
Debrincat

Maybe LAK throw in their 23 2nd round pick which Toronto flips for Ross Colton.

Chris Johnston says he is gone.

Good, loved the guy but he looked slow and I doubt it's going to get better

I'd imagine a roster player or two would be coming our way which will help even out the money

Yeah see i would do that.. its a nice mix.. i am a big pinto fan and big iafallo fan

Vilardi is a nice option if he can develop as a center bonus.. or you get a very talented winger and something about vilardi and knies is nice..

Tavares-Pinto-Vilardi
Knies-X-Jarnkrok
Holmberg-Lafferty-X
Why in the crap would you want a pissed of marner playing in Ottawa.
NO THANKS

Only West teams apply
The same with Nylander or Matthews

Unless Eastern teams blow us away

I don't care about Marner's feelings. Let him go to Ottawa and light up the Leafs for 3 points every time they play in the regular season - it doesn't really matter.

This is the type of deal where you get 3 players who make Marner's salary (Iafallo - 4M, Vilardi - 4M, Pinto - 3M) but you are a deeper and probably better team. Especially if you can get a 3rd asset out of LAK like a 2nd round pick and flip it for a NHL player from a capped out team like Colton or Bastian or Frederic.

Jarnkrok is a good top 9 winger that can move up and down the lineup. He's fast and his cap hit is very manageable. He adds a good element of speed and puck pursuit on the forecheck. Not everyone needs to be truculent. You can add bite and physicality without having to remove him anyway.

The team definitely gets more value for Jarnkrok in the top 9 at 2.1 mil than they likely would in free agency given he can play in the top six or on a third line

That's not the point iam making .
Marner will come back to haunt us playing in Ottawa

If Ottawa wants him give me brady Tkachuk which will never happen.

Certainly not doing it for Pinto

I like Vilardi

If we instill a true system and personnel change for a more effective playoff type style it becomes a 50 50 if marner would "haunt" us.. i mean what .. his balls will drop as soon as he puts on another jersey?

If a team f***en hammers him i dont see much changing.. he will likely keep getting better in the playoffs i dont doubt that.. but we would certainly know where to start with focusing on him

I don't think Ottawa acquiring Marner for Debrincat and Pinto turns them into a playoff team. I don't think the Leafs moving Marner for Pinto, Vilardi and Iafallo makes them a non-playoff team therefore I don't think Marner would haunt the Leafs. I think Marner holding Ottawa's new ownerships feet to the fire for a 13M contract would ultimately screw them into ruining their salary structure which looks pretty sound right now.

I think he's sneakily a good add for a team in cap trouble like Tampa and the Leafs would be wise to move on from him while he's probably at peak value. He's a 20 goal scorer signed for 3 years at 2.1M but historically he turns into a pumpkin every single playoffs. He hasn't scored at his regular season pace in a playoffs since his rookie year.

I already proposed trading him to Tampa for Colton but I'd also look at Boston who is trying to clear cap space to bring back Bertuzzi and Orlov and offer them Jarnkrok for Hall. Maybe Vegas is willing to part with Marchessault for Jarnkrok so they can afford to bring back Barbashev.

They can have him at 50% for whatever 1sts and 2nds they have left this decade.

PLD is a guy I would have a tonne of interest in, It's too bad he's pretty much destine for MTL.

Yup. And you gotta ask yourself why? He wants another kick at the can and why not his home town? Unless he looked at the dressing room and realized "this ain't it"
ROR looking elsewhere could very well be for that reason. Conversely, it might also be for the chance to play higher up in the lineup while receiving a contract offer that's commensurate with an expanded role?
