Brodie and Gio definitely stared to show the miles on their legs .. but overall re-signing Schenn would still make me pretty content with the d-core. Of course I expect some growth in Liljegren's game. Bit of a disappointing ending but I'm optimistic he'll grow. McCabe should also improve after having an off-season and training camp to settle with the team.

Rielly-Schenn
McCabe-Liljegren
Gio-Brodie
Timmins

Gio and Brodie can be load managed and it allows Timmins to have some veteran support as he grows.

I'd re-sign Benn actually as a #8 d-man .. he would fit in well here.

On the Marlies Kral and Niemela might push for spots eventually as well which could be helpful options after next season when Gio/Brodie are UFA's.

That's a solid defensive core, which is pretty much what we had for a good portion of the season. It's tried and tested. Gio is still a capable bottom pairing defenseman that works hard.

Not the first time I bring it up but I think I'd look at moving Brodie if there's a good chance at signing someone like Orlov, Graves, Dumba, or maybe someone like Mayfield or Soucy. Hell maybe another trade could bring in a defenseman. Orlov would cost a lot but the other ones should be mid-pair money. Pair one of them with McCabe for a fresh pairing. Younger, more physicality and more skill. Leafs want to and need to make changes, I don't know why he isn't part of that discussion. He could bring a couple good future pieces to add to the cupboard.

With Anaheim selecting 2nd OA, they're looking at a Zegras-Fantilli centre spine (+ Gaucher, 22nd OA).

I'll shake a non-Matthews core piece loose for McTavish all day.

That kind of trade needs to be built around a young C or D (Jiricek), can't be a winger.

Some chatter in the LA forums, saying they'd do Doughty for Tavares.

Let's say we do that, trade Brodie for Perron and sign Soucy.

That would certainly shake up the core and the D - how about this as a starting point?

That would be a tough decision. Doughty still has 4 years remaining on his contract at 11 million while Tavares only has 2 years remaining at 11 million. However I can see Doughty still being pretty effective in 3/4 years.

Doughty is still a borderline Norris candidate and raises his game under pressure. This isn’t a tough decision at all…. Though it isn’t a real possibility. Tavares doesn’t want I leave Toronto and Doughty doesn’t want to leave LA.

What’s in it for Tavares?

Or Doughty. He’s been a lifelong kings fan just like Tavares was a leaf fan.

If you accept that we're not getting d-man of comparable quality that also comes with significantly more term at a much better cap hit, and insist on a high end dman as the core of the return
Dmen- cap hits 6m or more

Agreed.
I guess at least with Doughty he be coming back home although he's never seemed to have any interest in that.

Here's my very early off-season breakdown before July 1st while bored at work. Flame away but I think I did at the very least OK to keep it fair.

-Marner to the Kings for Byfield, Vilardi and 2024 1st rounder (conditional/protected). This is tough to gauge and I'm struggling to find the perfect fit for both sides but I think it would be between Byfield and Clarke, and then a good young player (Vilardi or Durzi?) and then pick(s). Around the Eichel trade value. My view on Byfield is not that great but can't argue his potential and Vilardi's health makes me scared but can't argue with his recent production.

-Brodie to the Kraken for our own 2nd (2023) and another 2023 2nd round pick. They'll probably want more defensive quality and this is a good price for a stable veteran that fits their team very well. Hakstol knows Brodie as well. Leafs sell relatively high on a declining asset likely not retained past the year.

-Abruzzese, Murray and BOS 1st round pick to the Flyers for Laughton. Flyers are in full rebuild mode so getting a stop gap goaltender, a solid young player along with a 1st round pick for an average player signed for awhile is a good start. Leafs could use a primed Laughton in their bottom lines and he did have a career year.

-Re-sign Schenn to a 1 year deal and Acciari to a 2 year deal, both between 1.5M and 2M cap hits. Matthews and Nylander signed long-term to whatever it comes out to.

--This open up a lot of cap space and big changes. A good amount of size added, mixed with shooting ability and puck pursuit. Their big priority would be finding a really good center and a defenseman in free agency. Losing Marner will hurt a lot more than people think but it opens up room for depth.

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Tavares - Vilardi
Byfield - ? - Acciari
Laughton - Holmberg - Lafferty

young options: Robertson, McMann, Steeves, Hirvonen.

McCabe - ?
Rielly - Schenn
Giordano - Liljegren
? - Timmins

options: Niemela, Villeneuve... (need more quality depth).

If I’m dealing Marner to LA, I’d be looking for Kempe and Clarke coming our way. You’re dealing one of the best if not the best overall winger in the game when you factor Marners defensive game and PK abilities.

Kempe - Matthews - Nylander

I can dig that first line.

Given that lineup you could theoretically run Byfield or Vilardi as 3C and groom them to replace Tavares in 2 years. If not then Rodrigues would be the ideal 3C.

Edit: I missed Laughton who would be 3C.

That's fair and I could see that being something the Leafs would push for but I don't think they'll want to trade their locked up 40 goal scorer.

Laughton is also a capable center in theory. There would be options for the Leafs for sure. The free agency center depth is pretty bad from what I can see so it's probably more likely they go that route instead of signing someone. I do like Rodrigues.

Laughton would be a good target, he was another name I kept bringing up along with McCabe’s. Rasmussen being another.

I think Philly would be interested in something around the 28th pick for Laughton.

Kempe is super underrated. Doubt they'd bite on that, especially if adding Clarke on top.

Any trade involving Marner needs to have either A) Top 6 Centerman coming back to shift JT to the wing ++ other assests
B) Top 2 Dman coming back, wonder

For those at the bottom/middle of the pack in the NHL, what teams can offer that

Personally, the player I'd want the most is Soucy, I've liked him quite a bit but watching him in the playoffs just confirmed that. Mayfield would be right after. I feel like Orlov will just re-up in Boston...also the price I feel like will be too much as well.

I am not well-informed about Graves, so I have no say or comment. Whatever helps us stabilize the back a bit more I will take it.

Jarnkrok is a good top 9 winger that can move up and down the lineup. He's fast and his cap hit is very manageable. He adds a good element of speed and puck pursuit on the forecheck. Not everyone needs to be truculent. You can add bite and physicality without having to remove him anyway.

Marner is the one that should be traded but at fair value. Trading him for depth makes no sense. The package needs to be strong that a player like him should get.
