...Just so you know, the average attendance per-game in the last 10 years: (the capacity of the arenas in brackets, bolded are tournaments in North America)

2015 - CAN - (19,746 and 21,287) - 12,212 per game
2017 - CAN (19,746 and 21,287) - so far 8,004 per game

Thanks for the summary. Any chance somebody knows the average (or median) ticket price for only 2015 and 2017? Did ticket prices increase to a tipping point to cause the 50% drop?

If people believe that 8000 numbers they might as well believe everything the governments tell them. The numbers is inflated with the two 18 000 Canada games in Toronto. In Montreal the average is around 5000 and in reality with actual people at the games and not tickets sold it's probably 2500.

There's lots of pictures of the crowd at yesterday's Canada-Czech game and the actual crowd was probably 3000...

I feel the tournament has jumped the shark for me.

I just don't care about it anymore. I haven't the last couple seasons, and this year, I don't think I've watched more than 5 minutes.

Obviously, I've heard about the attendance problems and seen the pics of the empty stadiums.

Could others be feeling the same as myself? Just major apathy towards this TSN created thing now.

Montreal is a black hole for Junior hockey.

Quebec City would had done way much better and fill the Videotron Centre.

I feel the same. I haven't really cared much for the tournament the last 3 or 4 years. I've only watched one period of the tournament this year.

I think part of the magic was the early morning starts. I remember being a little kid on Christmas break watching the games first thing in the morning still in my pajamas.

Something about night games just seems pretty dull.

I loved the tournament all the way through college. My friends and I planned our nights around the 2005, 2006 and 2009 tournaments. Now that I'm a working stiff, it just doesn't have the same feel to it, morning or evening start, unless I can take holiday time between Christmas and New Years.

It's like what Tsn did with the CFL, completely took the fun out of it and overpricing it resulting in empty seats galore everywhere. The worst in all of this is the insane ticket prices combined with the fact the players don't get paid and Hockey Canada received millions from the governments(the tax payers).

I think some of you watch the WJC for the wrong reasons. I see so many people say they aren't interested anymore because no prospects from their NHL team are in the tournament. What happened to just cheering for your own country? That is what the tournament is about.

Tickets for the Team Canada games are pretty expensive in Toronto, in addition the other costs are crazy (parking, concessions etc).

Just easier to watch at home with friends, which is what we have been doing so far.

Not sure, but I would think a major factor in regards to the ACC was that scalpers bought packages expecting to make their money back on the medal rounds in 2015. Without that incentive they just didn't buy up the event.

The more things change, the more things stay the same. Hockey Canada should have been dissolved by Government of Canada, and replaced by a less corrupt organization. Alan Eagleson and his cronies stole millions from Canada Cup tournaments, under the guise of "Hockey Canada." He also was influential in barring Bobby Hull and Gary Cheevers from competing in the 1972 Super Series, since they defected to the WHA. In the US, the higher ups of Hockey Canada would have done prison time in the 90s, for their part in screwing over almost every NHL player in their pension plan prior to 1992. I guess greed still rules the day.

I would never support this tournament, until prices are affordable to people other than the richest 1-5% of Canadians.

The last time Halifax hosted the event. Almost every game was a sell out or near sell out at Scotiabank Centre, INCLUDING relegation games.

After 2019, it's time to find a non-nhl host.

I agree with this, but will give the B.C. host cities the benefit of the doubt until then. Maybe I'm being nostalgic but if anyone remembers the tournaments in 1991 (Saskatchewan), 1995 (Red Deer) and 2003 (Halifax) just to name a few off the top of my head, they'll remember a much better atmosphere and vibe at the tournament, packed houses (yes, in smaller arenas), less of a corporate look and feel to the tournament, and reasonable TSN coverage - though it was trending to over-saturation by 2003. I still watch the tournament but it all honesty I wish Hockey Canada will forego a few bucks and bring the tournament back to these smaller junior hockey cities - it would be healthier for the tournament in the long-term imo.

It's all about pricing.

If the prices in Montreal and Toronto were closer to what they will be in Buffalo (or what they were in Halifax), then games would be sold out as well.

Ticket prices are just too high.

I wanted to go until I saw ticket prices. Funny thing is that I'm thinking about going to Buffalo as it's more affordable (then going in my home town...).

We just spent over $200K on fireworks for New Year's Eve...

It's a price gouge and the talent isn't enough for anyone to pay that price.

I think so. People had no problem cheering when they won five in a row. Now that they are underdogs it's a different story.

but but I was told Montreal and Toronto were the hockey meccas?? what the heck?

time to put to bed that notion...

I'm hearing a ton of excuses but the prices were crazy in Edmonton back in 2011, but even the smallest game had over 13,000 people show up

pretty embarrassing for a city the size of Montreal and they can't even fill a Team Canada game

I think after 95 posts (literally 95 posts) in this thread, we've come to understand your viewpoint.:deadhorse

There's too many weak teams, no one caress about a Canada vs Latvia game. The tournament should be like 6 teams so most games have 2 good teams in them. Not only that but good teams won't even play each other a single time, at least 1 of Russia or USA won't even play Sweden which is a wasted opportunity.

The rampant overdone nationalism from TSN is what's turned me off from this tournament over the past 10 years or so.

I understand it for a true best on best tournament, when its nice to remind everyone who produces the best players in the world.

But for a bunch of teenagers/prospects? The U-21 Euros are probably the best example, everyone kind of cares about them, the games get decent crowds (10-15K, maybe the final gets 25K) and they're on TV and get a very good level of media coverage in the participating countries. And that's the extent of it.

But I flipped onto Sportscentre last night and heard some dramatic prose BS like 'the Czechs made the entire country hold their breath' and I'm like FOH TSN. Like its some major catastrophe to our country if a bunch of teenagers lose to the Czechs in a quarter full arena.

This tournament makes me want to cheer for TSN to fail more than for Canada to succeed. Perhaps that sounds unpatriotic of me (I would say when it comes to our national sports teams I am more patriotic than most tbh), but I just can't stand it.
