At the end of the day I ask what is different about this year’s team vs. last or the year before that?

What is the difference in the core 4 + Rielly? Did they alter/change their games? Doing something different in terms of adding a cycle, forecheck, harder to play against to their repertoire?

How about the depth/bottom 6? Has it improved? Can it also do the above? Better at scoring? Better from the days of Kadri/Kap/Brown/Hyman/Johnson etc?

How is our 2 g or goalie system compared to years past? More dependable? Stronger in clutch or big games?

How is our coaching? Improved? Showing new stuff? New PP innovations?

How is the team? Does it fail to start on time? Come hard against an AHL opponent? Make a statement meeting an old teammate playing for another contender? Appear to be developing killer instinct?

What exactly is leading me to believe a different outcome doing the same thing? These are the questions beyond just free agents.
This is a thread about free agwnt signings.

Shuffling chairs on the deck of the Titanic doesn’t get you to the shore.

We need a new captain to steer the ship better.

Dubas must go.
your analogy is wrong, in your scenario, Dubas built the titanic, he didnt captain it. the Captain is Keefe

Campbell is blossoming into an elite #1G. I can forgive Dubas if Mrazak turns out to be a mistake.

The rest of the acquisitions also seem somewhat underwhelming to me. Voted C to start but would consider changing it to a D.

If Mrazek continue with his injury problem it could become dead cap for the Leafs and that will be a problem. I think he is Dubas’s biggest mistake of this years crop

wasnt the fault of the guy who built it though...

Actually one recent theory the fault was the riveting, the steel was faulty on the Titanic. That's why so many departments flooded so fast. Soooo it was one of the guys that build it/// Not sure how that fits the topic at hand though?

LOL

But the additional pick the oilers offered for a hymen sign and trade at 8 years has been signed to a 3 year elc by oilers.
Not only do you have no way of knowing what specific draft pick was being negotiated (they had two 6th round picks FYI), you have no way of knowing who the Leafs would have selected in that spot. Good for you that you signed some random 6th rounder to an ELC, but it literally has nothing to do with us, Mr. Edmonton fan stirring stuff up on the Leaf board.

Might be a minor thing... Might be a major thing.

Apparently Matvey Petrov was someone Holland noted gave him a Datsyuk vibe and was worth the late round gamble.

Not sure why Dubas turned down a literal free pick in a year where scouting could pay off tremendously.
The bolded is repeated often.

Actually, they used the best materials and technology available at that time , it was the very best of the best in every aspect ...it completely sucks by today's standards, but, was the cream of the crop back then.
...someone had called Dubas the Captain of the ship using the Titanic as an example, and I pointed out Dubs would have been the builder, not captain. (it would be the coach)
i.e. Dubas supplies the players, if you sail them into an iceberg, its not his fault. like continuing to play the same line head to head vs another line when its not working rather than change course and steer clear of that disaster.

yea they didn't pay the proper value , so they got him for free instead . lol
They were getting him as a UFA either way. The referenced potential deal was about Edmonton getting an extra year and saving cap. They did not get that, because they were unwilling to pay the proper price.

Edm was getting what they wanted regardless , Dubie could have had a free lottery ticket but he f***ed it up .

and when did Dubie become the chosen one to set what's proper value ? lol

Bunting - B. Good kid, decent player but not tough as I thought he woudl be, not a goal scorer either. Considering he has played all his games with Tavares and Matthews, I am not sure what else he needs to get more points. Has looked out of place on first line. Maybe he needs more time

Kampf: -C Was never a fan. Players like him look good, but really at the end of the day don't amount much. Especially for a 3rd liner. Take a look at every championship third liners, they can contribute offensively. . St Louis had Bozak, Tempa has had Tyler Jhonsson as Centers. All of those players can contribute 40 points a season and 10+ goals

Kase B+ - So far so good. He's the only one I am excited about. He has shown much improvements considering he hasn't played full seasons last 3 years

Ritchie - F - Again was never a fan of this pick up.

Semeyonov - Still too early. Looked decent but so far looks like every other player. Decent skater and that's about it

Mrazek - meh

Except they didn't. The potential deal was so that they could get an 8th year and lower the cap hit. Edmonton was not willing to pay proper value to get that, and as a result, did not get that extra year and saved cap space. Pretty simple.

Maybe he wants to make it as hard as possible for other teams to succeed and retain their talent? Draisaitl and McDavid have to be renegotiated in that time.

If someone said "you have a 3% chance of getting a quality NHL player out of this pick, or Edmonton has 500k less cap space each year", I'd choose the cap space.

You can value whatever side of it you want, but cap space is very valuable right now, Dubas wanted more and didn't cave, the usual "we hate Dubas cause he caves to everyone" should be happy.
