Playoff Keefe

We’re up 3-1 coming after a shutout where the Habs have nothing going. This guy subs out Dermott for a rookie Sandin who’s turnovers lead to two goals in the loss. How can he still be a coach? This is just one of many gaffes over two years in the post season. I’ve never seen a worse coaching performance. How does he get any respect whatsoever? Is it because he looks like a young Winston Churchill or something and it’s just assumed he’s a great leader? He sucks.

the line matching absolutely killed us. even at home keefe couldn't get away from it. why it took keefe until the final 10 minutes of game 7 to switch up the lines is beyond me... and guess what? when Keefe did switch the lines up we looked pretty good

oh well. it is what it is. we need to take this opportunity as a lesson and learn from it.

He didn't try to get away from it. He said before the playoffs he wouldn't line match and didn't see the need for it.

Keefe didn't even seem like he was aware that line matching is a thing. Plays the first line like "if I play them more, as xGF/60 suggests, I'll get more goals."

In a nutshell......yes that seemed to be the "game plan".

Inexperience at all levels (PRES, GM, Head Coach, Assistant Coach) has really cost TOR.

OK take a away the emotion of a 1st round loss to MTL and you'll see this team looks better than it did years ago.

If you peel it back a little more you'll see a few issues though: cap problems, weak prospect depth, very little drafting in the first round, 3 more seasons with Nylander/Matthews, and very little playoff success. Heck last year TOR didn't even make the playoffs. This season TOR really hurt the fanbase too. The fans are so angry and will throw garbage on the ice this season. It'll come down so hard that they'll be begging for Waffles and Jerseys.

He got outcoached in the playoffs

This 1000x

He should have been fired after losing to a zamboni driver. So far Keefe has had a lot of bad memories than good ones

I forgot it was Keefe behind the bench for the Zamboni debacle. I honestly thought it was Babs. That makes having a players coach down on the list of guys I am looking at to replace Keefe.

It seems to me that the young core is always waiting for someone else to step up in big moments. The Zamboni game is a perfect example. They thought they had it in the bag when he entered the net. Everyone figured someone else would put in the effort to score...it was harder to score than they thought because the Canes were a TEAM and played hard in front of the goalie. We just wilted.

Somewhere in the bowels of the ACC...Marner whispered to himself "They were supposed to let us win..that's how the story is supposed to go."

The Leafs played in the playoffs like the way they played in the regular season...you'd think in those overtime losses Keefe would have told his players to get the puck out or get the puck deep...don't mess around with it at your blueline or at the opposing blueline...instead we see that pass by Galchenyuk and the "skate the puck back into your own zone to keep possession" by Dermott...and yes, keep playing Matthews and Marner until blue in the face when it wasn't working...I'm not sure if Keefe could coach at the NHL level.

The problem is if Duby does fire him...he is just going to get another guy who believes in "Total Possession Hockey" and do the same shit. This stats backed approach is not going to work because there is no way to value mistakes caused by our style of play. We might get away with a risky turn back 98% of the time...but when you fail..its at the worst time...just like Dermy.

The subbing in of Sandin was just old fashion Hubris on Keefe's part. Why would you mess with a lineup when they won 3 straight? Why? I thought Sandin was responsible for at least 1 goal against in game 1...did he really think he learned all he needed by watching a few games from the press box? I know Dermy ended up killing us in game 6...but maybe we don't even have to play a game 6 if we just left everything the same.

I "liked" Keefe but the second I heard him scoff at the idea of line matching the top line he completely lost me. Like that's literally one of your biggest jobs in the playoffs and you're just going to leave it up to faith?!! Don't be so f***ing lazy (and arrogant I might add again) and do your job. What's the point of winning the division if you're not going to take advantage of literally the only advantage you have? And for the 8 billionth time -- the power play?! Are you f***ing kidding me? Keefe isn't the guy man. It sucks that he has such a long history with Dubas because we're definitely stuck with him.

Just to add to the same point; I "liked" Dubas too but he's treading in the same waters of running out the same shit over and over.

To me it's barely worth a discussion.

Keefe isn't the guy.

Dubas isn't the guy.

Shanny isn't the guy.

The team is significantly flawed due to a multitude of missteps and pride has gotten in the way of actually improving.

Admitting you are wrong is a growth opportunity. It's amazing how much the Ego can affect your decision making.

I agree...adjustments are part of the game, and by not adapting you're just giving the opposition good looks to shut you down...one should never be too comfortable or prideful to think that there's only one way to do things...that's a huge weakness...the players ain't gonna go tell their coach things aren't working and to shuffle the line-up, that's the coach's job...last night Trotz moved Palmieri up to the top line right away to play with Barzal when he realized Komarov had nothing going on playing with Barzal...the Isles then went on to take a 3-0 lead with Barzal scoring the 2nd goal off of a rebound with Palmieri screening Vas.

Keefe didn't see that Marner was having a mental breakdown.

Marner was never going to "play out of it".

Marner should have been shipped to PP2 and the third line.
