It probably looks bad since he had a terrible turnover last night and gave the game away, but I have felt for at least a year now that Muzzin is declining. I think it's time to move him, especially since we could absorb the loss very easily on the left side with Rielly, Sandin, Gio (and Brodie is left handed too).

Time to move on? What could we get for him? Almost 34 years old, 5.625M AAV this season and next. Actual salary of 4M for those 2 sesaon I believe.

He physically looks incapable of playing at the pro level. Like his body does not seem to be doing what he wants it to. Watching him bounce off players and get blown by was just painful.

39 year old Mark Giordano was arguably the best defenseman last night, besides maybe Brodie. Everyone else looked incompetent, and especially Muzzin and Holl. It's super concerning to say the least.

I think a lot of the fan base agrees with you. Unfortunately I feel the ideal time to move him has passed. The rest of the league sees the same contract and the same declining defenceman. Even if he is still a positive for his play on the ice, and I think he is despite his current decline, the contract means he probably doesn't bring much back. I think any trade would essentially be a cap dump and you have to ask if that really helps us in the end since we would need to fill the spot.

Muzzin has entered the whipping boy years of his career. It’s not necessarily his fault. But the team’s reliance on his brief performance vs Tampa, cap hit and lack of alternatives an indicator that they can trust him could have some very negative consequences. I think he belongs on LTIR and he’ll get there.

I am not going to count him out just yet .. vet defenders often are not in game shape to start a season .. but one of these guys Muzzy, Holl, Sandin and Gio is likely going to get clocked .. i think Muzzy or Holl has best chance .. these 4 guys are not skating at an NHL level to compete against fast wingers .. you can't compete without an NHL defense no matter how good your forwards are .. I did not expect to see da Habs make our D look that bad .. a real shocker .. wow i missed camp and those of you who saw it and predicted it .. good call .. i hope it is not father time

Definitely a rough start to the season. He’s a warrior but his body is clearly failing him. Like others have mentioned he’s probably destined for LTIRetirment after this season IMO

I didn't catch most of camp either but the sentiment was that Holl/Muzzin were back to their form from a couple of years ago, um that's clearly not the case. Things will get real ugly for them this season, now more than ever there is an urgency to make a run.

Awful start for sure. However, he did miss the preseason and has been a slow starter the last few years. Hopefully he improves. If not, the decision to not move him in the offseason could begin to look really suspect.

Only way you're moving that contract is by attaching a first rounder. Best bet is LTIR.

Muzz looks done! Murray getting lots of heat for last night's loss, and the 2nd goal is all on him, but Holl and especially Muzz...looked so awful. The silver linning is that Muzz will be on LTIR in no time, and can rest up for the playoffs on Robidas island.

He looks like shit. If he can't even be relied upon to show up in training camp to get ready for the season, good luck when the games matter. Huge whiff by Dubas to not move on from him long ago

It's sad to say but your right IMO. Muz looks like he is skating in knee high sand, he is so slow and I'm sure the bumps to the head have not helped his ability to process the game at the speed he needs to process it. He seems like a salt of the earth type guy, its a shame the jackals that call themselves a Leaf fan are turning their guns at him. Wouldn't it be neat if "fans" cheered for their players not tear them apart. A fan can be critical and correct with out having to be nasty.

The difference between the Leafs and the Lightening is that Tampa knows how/when to move off players.

Mcdonagh shows a slight amount of regression, and he's out the door. But the Leafs miss out on the chance of moving Muzzin and using his cap space more efficiently.

After this season? More like 10 games into the season. His body just won’t hold up.
Likely a guy like Wilson could just run over a Holl or Muzzy they are moving so slowly it is a pretty easy reef and boom concussion .. even Gio could get it .. i put da odds as pretty high one of them gets hurt pretty bad in next few games .. you can see da struggles to make simple plays and trying to avoid da hits

Watch Murrays head positioning on both Caulfields goals, he's was not tracking the puck. His chin is tucked and eyes are down looking at I don't know what. Murray looked like a big goalie trying to be a wall vs using skill or athletic ability to stop the puck. 3 of the 4 goals were top shelf glove side.

They had a chance to move him? When and to where?

Simple in-house fix for now is to demote Muzzin to third pairing and promote Gio to second pair. Only one year removed from Gio being the top pair dman on another team that had surprisingly good xGA, everyone's favorite defensive stat.

In an ideal world we do Gio-Brodie second pairing, Sandin-Lil third pairing and dish out assets for Riellys no.2 and that super Boosh Keefe wants after getting just Boosh.

Didn't say Murray was great, but that loss is hardly all on him. Muzzin looked so out of place, and cost the team in the end. The Holl/Muzzin combo has cost this team, and continues to. Until that is rectified, our netminders will be on their own out there when they're on the ice. If the goalies aren't ON that night, we can expect much more of the same as last night.

He also seems to be playing hunched over a lot and struggling to corral the puck with a short stick.

Yeah I get that, my comment was more a discussion about Murray than responding to something specific that you said. The entire D was really bad all the way from Rielly to Sandin...

I'll have to check that out tonight, most dmen especially defensive dmen play with long sticks.

They all looked sluggish! Brodie and Giorodano are slowing down naturally, but still looked way better than our "Shutdown" pairing. Rielly seemed non existant last night. Let's hope they come out flying at home, but if Holl & Muzzin are together again, we know this will be a long season with our coach just not willing to change.

Couldn't have we sent him to the Marlies for a conditioning stint to start the season, instead of with the Leafs?
