Great playoffs last year are erased by one game so far... I'd hate to see the threads being started if we go down 0-2 tonight and Matthews doesn't play well again.

"Is it time to move on from Matthews?"

A lot of our fanbase sucks.

Yeah I get that, my comment was more a discussion about Murray than responding to something specific that you said. The entire D was really bad all the way from Rielly to Sandin...

I'll have to check that out tonight, most dmen especially defensive dmen play with long sticks.

Yeah. The puck carriers like Kaberle and Rielly like the short sticks though guys like Gardiner liked them on the longer end. Muzzin just looks like he’s always on top of his stick whether doing his little kick out wrist shot or poking around at the puck hunched over and leaning with his head. The images online are a bit inconclusive but just looks off to me.

It's sad to say but your right IMO. Muz looks like he is skating in knee high sand, he is so slow and I'm sure the bumps to the head have not helped his ability to process the game at the speed he needs to process it. He seems like a salt of the earth type guy, its a shame the jackals that call themselves a Leaf fan are turning their guns at him. Wouldn't it be neat if "fans" cheered for their players not tear them apart. A fan can be critical and correct with out having to be nasty.
Most of the time the fan thinks they might get noticed for being the very first to see it. Then they get signed for their collective insight.

They had a chance to move him? When and to where?

It would have leaked if they had tried to move him. Instead, all the insiders like Mirtle and CJ said pretty early in the offseason that they weren't going to move Muzzin. It was never pursued.

Tampa told Mcdonagh that if he didn't waive his NTC that they would put him on waivers, so he relented. I don't think Toronto has the guts to do something like that. They'd rather be the nice guys.

They didn’t try to move him. They are rolling the dice that they can have the Muzzin we saw in the Tampa series.

All eyes are on Muzzin now.

He's either gonna man up or he's going to accept his role as the new Larry Murphy.

Our best hope is that he goes to Robidas island and LTIR that contract. But knowing him he won't do that and he'll be an absolute anchor for this team for the next two years.
Well you say to him he will sit in the minors unless he accepts a trade. TB was in the same position with McDougnah last year except he still had value. At this point he could be looked at as a cap dump at that price point because all he is at this point is a bottom pairing buy and there are far better options at 5.6 milllion.

Dubas lacks the balls

Great playoffs was 7 games. Explain how that help offset the concerns that are based on decline age and health.

Long way to go for next playoffs too. What's the gas tank this year by then ? Do you know ?

I didn't catch most of camp either but the sentiment was that Holl/Muzzin were back to their form from a couple of years ago, um that's clearly not the case. Things will get real ugly for them this season, now more than ever there is an urgency to make a run.

I didn't think so.
Holl was demonstrably worse than Mete.
Sure he had some good moments, as all players do.
But he didn't earn his spot.

Only way Muzzin survives the season and plays in the playoffs is if he only dresses for about 50 games and his minutes come down to around 15/game. He's too broken for top 4 and hard PK minutes for 82 games.

The difference between the Leafs and the Lightening is that Tampa knows how/when to move off players.

Mcdonagh shows a slight amount of regression, and he's out the door. But the Leafs miss out on the chance of moving Muzzin and using his cap space more efficiently.

Yes I think this is Dubas' fatal flaw is he is too loyal to his players. I know it would piss off the room but at the same time they deserve it for not getting it done.

I said to try and move him at the draft but never happened. So I think the plan is to LTIR Muzzin and Murray if they prove they can't play at the NHL level this season

Do you know? This is all random speculation after a single game.

He was fresh and one of our best D (maybe our best) for 7 games 5 months ago, but now he is suddenly terrible after 1 game?

Maybe he is injured or washed as a player, but his back has apparently been an issue his entire life, so that's not new.

All I am saying is this is a very reactionary discussion and it was had last year too and then he came back and played great towards the end of the season and playoffs.

McDonagh would have been their second best D this year, they would not have moved him if not for the cap, they didn't move him to use the cap more efficiently, they moved him cause they needed to move someone. Tampa also looked like trash first game, our board would be trading half the team by now.

Some of us are here to think, others are here just waiting for something to help them complain about what posters are doing.

Muzzins health being on the decline and therefore him is not random speculation. It literally is.

You just said he's had a problem his whole life. Those get worse as you age.....

Muzzin had all summer to become fresh. Game 1 and he looks like he is slower than last year @ 5.625 million. I cant imagine him defending the rush in the playoffs, that will at minimum end up with a holding or hooking penalty, possibly a goal.

I believe it was reported he was dealing with a health/injury issue over part of the summer .

You can't put a player with a limited NTC on waivers

The time to move on from him was before the expansion draft. Expose him and Holl. If Seattle didn't take him then other teams would be able to see he was available. All before his NTC kicked in.

The decline has been happening and is about to come at a rapid pace. Sucks to see a player that has battled so hard lose that edge.

Well he sucked and was hurt for most of last year too if you're looking for a discussion about sample size.

Muzzin should be on Robidas Island in the Lupul Suite. He looks completely cooked and I wouldn't really trust a short burst of solid hockey because the health is not going to be there six months deep into the season with wear and tear.

His play has been up and down, and most recently up, minus this one game, I am just going to wait for more than one game to declare him useless.

Seems pretty simple to me, not sure why people can't grasp that.

Source on this? I'll trust the Toronto medical staff over speculation.

Funny how no one has posted that Tavares is back to his old self, but multiple panic threads exist.
