There may be nothing the Kings can do to move Carter off the roster other than demoting him to Ontario. If that happens expect Carter to retire and the Kings to be stuck with the recapture penalty. The Kings should trade Toffoli, and not be upset if he starts scoring a bit wherever he ends up. Whatever Toffoli ends up doing for another team, he wasn't going to do it for the Kings. I don't think we need to see what Kovalchuk can do with a new coach. He had Stevens and didn't play a lick of defense, so move him out if you can find a taker.

Its waive him and he retires or buyout. I dont see any other options at this point

2019-20 POWERPLAY. MUST BE A NEW ANIMAL.
The current animal is sickly, anemic and 14 years old.

PP goals: Carter 5, Kovalchuk 4, Toffoli 3, Kopitar 0. Horribrutal.

Only Brown, with 9 and Doughty, with 7, have scored on the PP.
The Powerplay must be revamped next year. There is no movement and Kopitar on the
halfwall is like a statue. All teams know this and easy to defend - they know he will only pass to
the point, or try a cross ice pass...they know he will absolutely not skate to the goal and try
to shoot or force something. The ONLY way to correct this, is to move him off there
and put him on front of the goal, or he does not play on the pp. Period.

Kempe has not got a lot of PP time, but last night on the first PP, he was moving continually and
made some very good plays. This makes the defense move and may allow Kempe (or whoever, except Kopitar can't do this, he's too slow and methodical and set in his ways, thus his only place should be in front of the goal) to get an opening to skate in and shoot or make a pass and have a better chance to score.
Kempe and Grundstrom should take Carters and Toffoli's places. Kempe is one of the best on the Kings in zone entries. 8 goals between Carter and Toffoli on the PP all year, with the most PP minutes, outside of Kopi and Doughty is terrible. Kopi will actually score a few goals in front and if he floats back some, to the slot, he also scores from there. Moving him off the halfwall, teams will now have much more of a challenge, when it comes to the Kings PP.

ESG leaders on Kings: Kopitar 19, Iafallo 13, Kempe 12, Wagner 12, Brown 11. Think Kempe, Grundstrom and Wagner should be on unit #2. Put Wagner in front of the goal. Why not?
His 20.1% shooting % is #1 on the Kings. And they said "Wagner can't finish" . His hands have been better than advertised. He's strong and has good size and may be good in front of the goal on the PP.
The key on unit #1, is moving Kopi off the halfwall and removing 73 and 77. off it. As long as Kopi is on the halfwall, the PP will be bottom 20%. Guaranteed. it's like having a 4.5 to 4.0 advantage and not a real 5 on 4 advantage....he does almost nothing and easy to defend against.

the 2 biggest needs from MY POV on the PP at to get rid of TT (he's completely useless) and improving the Center position. Carter will be harder to get rid of but Toffoli is simply taking useful ice time in key spots away from others. Kempe's coming along but he's not the guy IMO for that role. A Matt Duchene is what I am thinking in terms of performance. Wagner deserves to have every minute of TT's PP ice time and that should happen this year.

I'm pretty optimistic about the future of the bottom six. I can see Grundstrom, Kempe, Amadio, Wagner, Luff and Brown all as quality bottom six players in 2-3 years when the Kings are hopefully contending again. So there isn't much more work to do there.

The top 6 is just a disaster though, no other way to slice it. You can probably put Kopitar in as a 2C or a 1A/1B situation with this years pick, Kupari or Vilardi. Atleast one of those 3 things has to hit and hit big. But beyond Kopitar there isn't anything close to a top 6 forward currently on the roster.

Forbort and Toffoli are both 27 and both going to become UFAs next summer. By that time, they'll both be 28. If those two are considered core guys, then you are looking at a horrendous hockey team.

What’s more likely in the next ten years: Kings win Stanley cup, Presidents' trophy, or have a forward that wins the Art Ross trophy.

That should be the goal, be horrible because the young guys are leaned on heavily. If by some random chance they are decent, let it be because those young players exceed expectations, not because certain veteran players don't suck.

This would be the perfect outcome for me:

The defense is starting to unravel now as well. The Kings are going to be drafting with a lottery pick for at least a few years.

I am beginning to wonder if the Kings are going to waste the money they are spending on Doughty.

They'd still **** it up.
No, they’ll select Hughes and still won’t win. No defense and bad goalies will kill you every time. If EDM wins lottery, they’d be better off trading the pick and picking up a D or G. But then again, they’ll trade for the wrong ones.

They paid Doughty for the Cups. Just like Quick, Brown, and Kopitar. It sucks, but it was never about wasting the money or not. It was about rewarding an employee for past accomplishments when the time came. Had they all had better timing, everyone would've gotten a Quick style contract, prior to the new CBA.

Chicago did it, and have paid for it too. Pittsburgh didn't have to, because Crosby really likes 8 and 7. Boston gave Bergeron, Marchand, and Krejci big 4th contracts, and have lucked out in having them all still consistently produce into their 30's. Marchand has actually never been better than since his 30th birthday. And they struck gold with Pastrnak at the 25th overall pick. McAvoy at #14 too. Despite giving Backes an awful contract.

When are fans and GMs going to understand the players already were paid to win the cups?

Not that you are doing anything other than pointing out what it is, this is such a bogus argument. Players salaries are like the stock market, you buy a players stock based on expected returns in the future, not what they have done in the past. I heard GE was a great company once.

Just like a stock, a team should be able to cut a player and their losses.
