I'm desperate for Kings talk. I'll take what I can get.

You certainly won't be getting Kings talk on the radio.

Though not always Kings related, there’s a lot of great hockey podcasts during the offseason, 31 Thoughts podcast, Bob McKenzie, and I just listened to a terrific interview with Rick Tocchet on Spittin’ Chiclets.

Brown still sucked after his Nutrition Summer with the videos of him working out in the park.

Playing almost exclusively with Kopitar is a huge boost. Less defensive responsibilities and he also doesn't hit as much so he isn't as worn out.
Nonsense.

Playing with Kopitar means you have more defensive responsibilities not less.

Browns OZ starts last year were 43%. That's a big burden to overcome for any player's production, yet brown still scored in 22g 29a 51pts in 72 games (25g, 58pts pace). And Brown was also our main PK winger.

Comparatively Kempe's OZ starts were 53%. Carter's 49%.

I wish people would just recognize and accept what a good hockey player Brown is.

Solid 90 min of Kings talk with Dennis Bernstein and Inappropriate Earl

Thx for posting this.
Does Bernstein not realize that we'll have to take a cap dump back from any Quick or Carter trades so where do we get the 11 million to go after Panarin? No need to make a call to the agent if it's unrealistic to get the player. Also no talk of Wagner on the roster at the end ?

I never said he isn't a good hockey player.

Wouldn't you get a lot of defensive zone starts with Kopitar as your center? Even more so in a horrible season with a bad defense that probably leads to more defensive zone starts? Isn't it easier to overcome a 43% defensive zone start rate to score if you are riding shotgun to the best offensive player on the team as opposed to say 80% offensive zone starts with Lewis as your center, especially if almost half of your goals are on the power play?

Love the guy and I've never said he is a bad player. I'm never going to say the guy is a great even strength defensive forward, however. Since Sutter left, he has been allowed to play with Kopitar as his scoring winger while also getting an additional four minutes of ice time per night, leading to him cashing in on the power play like he did prior to his offensive game going into hibernation.

We can nitpick over his defensive prowess, but my main point is that his offensive rebound isn't due to training since he did that in the midst of slumping. Playing with the best center and getting primary PP time goes a long way. That shooting percentage of his really dipped once his 1st unit PP time went away.

very possible given the injury he was coming back from. I imagine it all depends on how he worked out this off season.

Right, which I'm assuming he's a prideful competitor and motivated this Summer to prove he's not washed up. He may very well be washed up, but I'm betting that he has some more left in the tank before it hits E.

I think it is a likely that Kopitar, Kovalchuk, Carter and Doughty have better years this year. My concern is by doing so it will push LA up to a mid round pick next year. However it s a catch 22 because we need those players to bounce back to have any value trade wise.

Will be an interesting season

Kind of a neat thread on the main boards had us put together best roster for your team from 2000-current. I threw together this:

Robitaille-Kopitar-Palffy
Frolov-Richards-Carter
Brown-Allison-Gaborik
Smyth-Stoll-Williams

Blake-Doughty
Visnovsky-Voynov
Schneider-Martinez
Greene-Scuderi

Quick
Potvin

What do you guys think? I didn't really look at D handedness.

Since the top 3 pick lottery was instituted, this is where the teams that ended up picking in the top 3 finished:

31st - 1 team
30th - 1
29th - 1
28th - 1
27th - 2
26th - 1
25th - 1
24th - 1
21st - 1
20th - 1
19th - 1

The #1 pick has gone to the 30th, 27th, 31st, and 29th teams
The #2 pick has gone to the 25th, 19th, 21st, and 26th teams
The #3 pick has gone to the 27th, 24th, 28th, and 20th teams

With the way the 4 drafts have gone, if they finish 10th or 11th worst, it's almost as good as finishing next to last. Not sure it's worth worrying about someone scoring an extra goal here and there to get a win or two.

Petersen could not be a soon to be 25 year old RFA at a worse time. Campbell now has a 1 way contract, so between him and Quick, they're spending $7.7m in cash on goalies. Quick is obviously not going anywhere. Campbell, at this point, has no other place to go. Petersen might have to get a contract like Frk or Kempe, where they get a couple hundred thousand if they're in Ontario. It sucks for the Kings that Petersen is already so old. He's going to be 26 before he gets a real chance to be the #1.

Stumpel has to be better than Stoll....

[edit] - Handzus too

It depends on how you look at the question. Is it just listing the best players by position, or do you try and figure out what the best real team would look like by position? And how is Deadmarsh not on there?

With today's RFA signings, the Kings now have close to $9M in cap space left. If they lock up Adrian Kempe to a long term deal (three or more years), I figure he'll cost somewhere in the $3 million range. Cal Petersen probably spends most of the season in Ontario next year and will be a regular with the Kings by the 2020-21 season, so he should get some term on his contract as well.

Next summer the Kings will have a slew of free agents and will have over $25M in cap space. Toffoli, Clifford, Lewis, Forbort, LaDue, Campbell, Ryan and Mario Kempe will all be UFAs. Grundstrom, Wagner, Walker and MacDermid will be RFAs.

Does it? There's only a handful of starting goalies under 26. Only ones that played more than 40 games are Vasilevskiy, John Gibson, Hellebuyck, Matt Murray, and Petersen isn't quite that pedigree. Carter Hart is sure to be on that list, as is maybe Korpisalo. But Petersen won't even be 25 until after this year starts. Not like the clock is running out, unless they insist on not playing him at all. All those other guys seem to get a few seasons of 20-40 games before taking the role or not.

I thought about Stumpel. I think Stoll was pretty great once we got him on the proper line. Smolinksi too.

The Kings have had some great RWers over the years. Maybe in over Williams? Gaborik?

I think Petersen probably ends this upcoming season with the Kings as Campbell being a UFA is probably gone by the deadline.
