I think it was one of Friedman's podcasts which mentioned that some teams thought they could "fix" Ristolainen. That or deploy him in a way that suits his strengths and hides his weaknesses; Justin Schultz in Pittsburgh probably being the most recent success story. Out of necessity, Buffalo was trotting Ristolainen out there for 25-26 minutes a game. Schultz was getting 22-23 minutes a game for Edmonton and got torched. Pittsburgh gave him less ice time but Schultz suddenly looked better.

Not sure if he's the right reclamation project for the Kings, but it might be worth the risk for somebody.

The old defense-first Kings could "fix" Ristolainen. The current iteration of the Kings couldn't.

No, because the Kings are not looking to sign aging players, they are looking to insert youth into the lineup. Signing Pavelski, or any UFA forward, takes away a spot for a young player. They already have too many forwards as is.
Theres a rumor Kings were kicking the tires on Perry.

Agree, and from what I'm reading, so do some of the GM's.

I know it’s the best move for us, but it sucks always going into free agency knowing we won’t get shit. I guess we got Kovalchuk last year, but he’s probably the biggest name we’ve ever gotten?

Considering how most free agent signings have delivered disastrous results, it’s for the best.

Sekera just got bought out, could be a serviceable bottom 3 Dman if he were rock bottom in terms of cost. Given our crapfest of a D-Corp he'd be an upgrade. Plus we KNOW he wouldnt make it the entire season so it works with a plan to have Anderson come in the last half or quarter of the season.

Sekera was a real solid player before the injuries broke down his body.

If the Kings do sign anyone in free agency, I think it will be for a filler LHD on a cheap 1 year deal. I'm not sure if Sekera would do that or if he has anything left in the tank. He was pretty good in the WC though.

As it stands. It really doesn’t make any sense for the Kings to add ANYONE, unless a guy or two is moved...

Kovalchuk-Kopitar-Brown
Iafallo-Prokhorkin-Toffoli
Grundstrom-Kempe-Carter
Clifford-Amadio/Lewis-Wagner/Luff

That’s already 14 forwards, not counting if one of the young guys can surprise out of camp and make the team.(Kupari,Vilardi,JAD)

Defense is already crowded too...

Forbort-Doughty
Martinez-Walker
Clague/MacDermid-Roy/Ladue

That’s 8 and already 1 too many. Also not counting if a young guy could surprise and make the team out of camp.(Brickley/Anderson)

I expect 0 signings this free agency period barring a move or two...
Which I would have expected to happen by now...

Sekera is still serviceable. Probably edmonton's best dman, even. Must be the fear for further injuries keeping him out of play that warranted the buyout. They need someone to fill that role on a nightly basis instead of sit in IR.

Yeah. Demitra wasn't on the same name level, but he was quite productive for 7 years prior to coming here. Actually sort of a coup that they got him.

Demitra is the biggest name they've ever signed in my opinion. Kovalchuk is over the hill and Mitchell wasnt as highly sought after because of his concussions. But to think those 3 are the best free agents the Kings have ever signed? Woof.

Jon Rosen mentioned the Kings might add a 4/5 D and some depth forwards.

Wonder if an Oscar Fantenberg reunion might be in the cards.

If we're adding Mitchell, Schneider was good too. Conroy wasn't bad for that one year either. Even Galley was ok. Technically Blake is a HoF name they signed as a free agent, but that probably doesn't count.

Also depends on what is meant by best. Stuart came in here on a prove it deal, proved it, then got traded for a couple picks. That should be filed under quality free agent signing.
