Gettin' ready for a long day of nuthin' tomorrow

According to this, it's money.

Don’t look for Kings to go big in NHL free-agent market – Daily News

The salary cap for this coming season is $81.5 million and the Kings have a projected cap hit of $68,209,394. That gives them $13,290,606 in available cap space.

But the Kings still have to re-sign their own restricted free agents – they have seven – which will reduce that by a notable sum.
That they already have over $53 million in projected cap hit for 2020-21, which does not include potential money for six unrestricted free agents and many more restricted, further hamstrings the team.

I hope it’s a quiet day for the Kings.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they signed someone on a 2-way deal to help out in Ontario.

Wait till the GM’s blow their brains out during the initial wave and then have a look at the secondary market to see if there is anything worthwhile.

At this point your just looking to bring in guy(s) on short term deals.

I’m cool with giving the young guys in house first crack at roster spots.

Why would Kings sign McQuaid when we have MacDermid?

I don’t think Kings do anything and judging by these deals and the deals over the past few years I wouldn’t either,

I’m totally fine with LA sitting out any day 1 ufa action, no reason to pay a premium for what are a bunch of barely above replacement players, after the major prizes are gone.

Call me crazy, but I see the Kings being very competitive next year if our young defensemen play as advertised. I think last year was a fluke. We can expect a lot better from Carter, Toffoli, and Kopitar. Also, with a solid box six filled with young and energetic players like Kempe, Gundstrom, Wagner, Luff, and maybe even Kupari or Vilardi at the second half of the season, we can go pretty far. Not saying we are cup contenders (we are obviously no where near that), but I think we can make a strong push to get into the playoffs. I think T-Mac will really turn this team around.

I look forward to watching competitive hockey. And unlike last season, there is no way I am hoping for a tank. Really not worth it. I want this team to push and make the playoffs for a few seasons, and then when the time is right (e.g., 2021-22), have the experience to go on a long cup run.

it doesnt matter if we suck this year as long as we are sucking because we have a promising future.

last couple years have been rough because we have been very bad and no real hope

Experience; something we lack on our blueline.

He's played over 500 games as well as winning a Stanley Cup. Nothing against MacDermid, I love the guy but McQuaid probably holds more value.

Don't do anything, let the young guys get some experience, maybe sign 1 or 2 low cost vets. Maintain cap room, because teams will need "help" in the coming year
Kings needs another good draft situation, finishing 10th in points in the conference does nothing for you.

How do players get experience? If next year is not being invested in, and you're filling out the roster with inexperienced guys in their mid 20's, that's ok. If you find just 1 guy out of LaDue/Roy/Walker/MacD/Brickley, then the 19-20 season will have been worth something. McQuaid would be doing something just to do something. They have enough warm bodies already here that they don't need another one.

If you're gonna go with that young defense why hold onto Quick? He will be lit up again and again completely destroying what's left of his value.

That's assuming they're holding onto him. It's probably more likely than they're stuck with him. At least for one more year. $7m in cash for a goalie is still a lot. It's easy to say retain, but teams don't tend to retain a lot for years on end, which is what the Kings would have to do. Term is and always will be a problem, and Quick was handed a 10 year deal. Now is when that hurts.

Just curious what people think, are we a top 3 draft team next year? Our roster really hasn't changed and were a year older.

Were not going to be very good next year with all the young inexperienced kids.Probably 3 years down the road I would expect a huge improvement overall.

They quit before the season started last year, and this year management has publicly said the team isn't good enough to compete or invest in. Who knows how they react to that particular vote of confidence. Are they prepared to practice when Sept comes around? Just have to wait and see. It took about 97% of the roster not showing up for 82 games to be 30th.

Looks like Sekera to the Stars. 1 year 1.5M.

That's the one deal that I would've liked to see the Kings make. Kings could use a LHD. Especially if pending UFA Forbort is traded. If Sekera has a good year you flip him at the deadline for a pick.

Me too but hard to blame Sekera. If I was him I would have chosen to play for Dallas, better team, lower taxes and property values.

Call me a sucker but... I think we'll be better. I think having a consistent coach behind the bench that isn't fawningly happy to lose will make a big difference, and I think the improvement will come from younger players.

Plus Kopitar and Doughty just can't be that bad again.

Agreed. "we're just older" is wrong. And those performances all around were unsustainably bad. New coach bump, new faces on the roster, youthful hunger...no one is saying we'll be worldbeaters but we won't be a lottery team. And it's better that we're not because f*** the lottery anyway.
