I (wrongly) assumed that Byron had some behind-the-scenes offer, which is why he wasn't going to sign with the Pens. Nope, just a classic case of overestimating his own ability and market demand.

He would have had offers of ELCs. Maybe not as many as he thought though. Risky game he's playing though.

There was a lengthy article with Byron quotes out yesterday or the day before and it seems he's looking for the possible quickest way to become an NHL C.

It seems he figured it'd be tough in PIT cuz a) JR will eventually find a 3C and b) they were signing the likes of ZAR(even tho i believe he won't be a C in the NHL imo). They later signed Johnson after knowing Byron was gonna go elsewhere.

Seems he and his agent looked in depth at every teams C depth and plans and decided on what might be the best path which was for them to keep their options open and sign on with FLA's AHL team which the NHL team doesn't have a ton of C depth with guys like Bjugstad regressing plus being injured alot.

Just stopping by,
Linus Ölund has taken some huge steps last 6 months. He's been really good in the beginning of CHL, 6 points (4g 2A) in two games and is competing for 1C spot in my Brynäs. I would not be surprised if he ends up at our best C this season. I think you might have a gem in the rough here. He has great hands and good vision.

Any chance he gets invited to the Swedish WJC camp? I know he probably won't make the team as an 18 year old but wondering if he's at least on their radar.

If you mean Olund, he was a double overager in the draft. So he is born 97 and not eligible.

Speaking of the WJC: I had a chance to work with two Swedish coaches recently, one of them a goalie coach. Naturally, I asked them about Gustavsson and they agreed that he'd be Sweden's starter, but that he is not the type of goalie that could steal the championship for them. Says nothing about his chances of becoming valuable for the Pens, because he has a long trajectory ahead of him.

Watching Almari play today. His edgework looks very good, he turned on a dime multiple times to keep a forward outside. Also, nice blocking to prevent a goal.

Linus Ohlund's season started today. 4-3 SO loss to Vaxjo. Ohlund was a -1 with a 62.5% in the FO.

D'orio opened the season in St. John with a 4-1 loss. Based on the highlights, he probably like to have at least 1 of the goals back, maybe 2. Can't blame him on the others though.

On a side note, the Halifax Mooseheads could potentially have 3 top 15 picks in the draft this year (and maybe another late first rounder). Add in a couple of nice looking players for the 2019 draft and they are a team to make a point to watch if you like junior hockey. If by some miracle, Hischier got sent back, they'd be can't miss.

Hischier is virtually a lock on that sad sack Devils team.

I watched him play live last night vs. the Habs. Hischier is the real deal. Very smart, very poised, excellent passer. He started on the third line but wound up on the first line by the second period. He seemed to work well with Taylor Hall.

I know he is not ours, but I also caught a climpse of Will Butcher last night. He was OK, a little nervous with the puck but understandable. Saw a lot of time on the PP. Played right defense as a lefty, and his partner was Michael Kapla.

Butcher has a good chance to stick, as well.

Opening night in the CHL:

-Connor Hall with 1 assist and a +1 in Kitchener's 5-3 loss.

-Zachary Lauzon with zero points in the Huskies' 4-2 win.

Looks like Drozg played center too, despite being listed as LW.

I wonder if Drozg was on the 4th line, or if they went with 3 lines all game and Drozg played on the wing but took a handful of draws? He had the least amount of faceoffs among the four centers.
