Do you understand contracts, lengths of contracts, and why someone receives a given contract at a certain previous point in time taking performance at that specific time and previous resume into account?

This is far too complicated for him to understand. Go easy on him. Start with basic arithmetic.

Yea doesn’t mean anything that we’re “last” but this team is going to have to go on a run or else the season will be over in 3 weeks.

Investing in how your young players are going to perform as opposed to past peperformance is the new way to go. Or else you're going to end up with train wreck contracts like Eriksson, Girardi, Clarkson, Ladd, Seabrook and pretty much every other big UFA signing that has proven to be an epic failure.

Hank isn't done and won't be the reason this team doesn't win, but he's simply not worth $8.5 million. No goalie is. I'm not sure how this isn't the 100% agreed upon view of that situation.

Can't fault the team for giving him the deal. Can't let the franchise player walk. I was fine with it, but people at the time said he took a discount. I didn't agree with that. We paid a pretty penny.

Not too much to ask for him to not allow that Kessel goal 40 seconds in and punch us in the gut. Not too much to ask for him to not allow a goal from behind the net to tie the game. That one was more bad luck but f*** man.

We play like garbage literally every October (usually even worse than this) but suddenly it's a problem because we're not shooting 17% this time.

By people saying he took a discount I think you really only mean his fanboys. I don’t recall any non-biased Rangers fan thinking the guy took a discount at 8.5M.

Sigh. Still too many unforced errors and not enough communication between players. They’ll turn it around like usual, but damn tonight was rough.

Most teams are now being more prospective and handing out contracts buying more years at a younger age for key players. It’s smart. The Habs are going to run into the same problem with Price’s contract.

The alternative is losing said player to another team. Did Pittsburgh want to lose Crosby? Did Montreal want to lose Price?

You don't give years to players before they've proven themselves, that would be more foolish, and agents representing players who know they have serious talent don't allow them to get locked up in long term deals worth very little.

This is a business first and foremost.

That’s also an old way of thinking. Rewarding for past performance with little regard for the future. It leads to overpaid players like Lundqvist and others who are not worth their contracts.

That leads to overpaying players like Girardi (who wasn't very good to begin with, but for some reason amassed a metric f***ton of praise/goodwill for..whatever it was he did), Lundqvist earned every one and every cent of each of his contracts. Just so happens that his play has been declining the last couple years. I don't think anyone could have foreseen him looking as non-Lundqvist-esque as he has these last 2 years after seeing what he did the previous 10. Staal, we got seriously unlucky with his contract/situation.
