Confirmed with Link: [PIT/MTL] Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 4th PIT 2023

Never forget that Jean-Charles Lajoie repeated several times that we should trade Petry to get the 2nd overall from New Jersey, this guy has the worst takes in the franco medias. (Jake Evans was an untouchable also, but that’s another story!)

So what is the justification for giving them Poehling? He’s gonna be a 20+ goal scorer, we could have made a power forward winger out of him.
If he turns into that then it's a bad trade, but personally I don't think he'll ever escape being a 4th line center.

Petry likely will put up some big points playing alongside Crosby, Malkin and Letang.

Poehling is a wild card. Could be out of the league in a couple of year, but also could score 20 with his shot. Pens have a knack of turning nobodies into decent scorers.

Matheson really wasn't all that bad last year

Matheson can bring offense, a bit inconsistently, but he also makes some boneheaded plays. I had hope for him to figure it out after his 1st couple of years, but he never really did. He's probably better than last year's version of Petry but overall I don't like this deal for the Habs. I don't think Poehling will break out and be something great, but I do think he'll be a regular player for PIT. I thought he showed enough last year after his last call up, but in all the Marty Magic, MSL just never had confidence in Poehling and no matter how good he played, he'd be settled with Pezetta or something for 6 minutes a game.

I would have rather kept Petry and Poehling, this makes no sense. This feels very wrong right now.
Petry asked for a trade. Do we all suffer from short term memory loss? The guy moped around the ice and called out Ducharme to the media. I love Petry one of my favourite Habs will always remember the blood shot eyes in the playoffs.

I'm hopeful he hoists one in Pitts now. Crosby with one more to his career would be wonderful to witness. Go Petry!

And btw, Matheson is a good defensement. Montreal just acquired a good dman under 30 for cheaper money for a guy on the wrong side of his 30s who wanted out.

Pacioretty went for zilch

I wonder, with the Lhd situation if this makes Edmundson expendable now.

It sounds bad on paper because Petry was a literal all-star for years. If we had of moved him before last year, we would have got a kings ransom.

But for the current scenario, it's a good move. The 4th year sucks, but what can you do.

I get that Mike Matheson has some qualities the Habs are looking for, but does he play the right side at all?

If not, this trade in isolation doesn't make sense? The habs are stacked with LHD prospects, but very slim on the right side. Trading Petry makes that worse if Matheson is strickly a LHD.
If Guhle steps up in Laval this year I could see Edmundson being traded at the deadline, potentially retained which would bring back decent haul that should include another 1st

I don’t dislike the player, but I’m not a fan of adding a nearly 5mil cap hit for 4 more years. Just doesn’t seem like it offers much cap relief. Oh well. We wanted Petry out, anf we found a taker.

Wait to see Matheson on the top pair on a bad team
He’s not a good d man
He’s a 4
